Kristin Beck is contemplating a bid to become the first transsexual to sit in Congress. Queue the freakout from the Republicans. Beck has stated that she is planning a run for the 14th Congressional Seat in Florida. This could be the one currently held by Democrat Kathy Castor. It covers Beck’s hometown of Tampa.
Beck is a former Navy SEAL who came out as trans in her book “Warrior Princess”. She is planning to run as a Democrat, but not until 2015. So, she would be running for Congress in 2016.
Beck is currently writing her second memoir with her friend Wendy Kelly. This second memoir covers more of her life than “Warrior Princess”, which covered her life as an in-the-closet trans woman while she was with the SEALS.
Currently, she is set to begin a series of speaking engagements on behalf of the US State Department and networking with other LGBT activists. She stated that “It’s like I’m on a new mission. A lot people are listening about this because I was a Navy SEAL then maybe weren’t before.”
Do not expect Beck to appear on FOX News anytime soon given their tendency to eschew having actual experts on transsexuality and actual transsexuals on the network.
In the last three decades, there have been a handful of openly lesbian and gay members of Congress. In the House, there are currently five openly gay men and one openly bisexual woman serving. In the Senate, Tammy Baldwin (WI) is the lone LGBT American to serve.
David Cicilline (RI), Sean Patrick Maloney (NY), Mark Pocan (WI), Jared Polis (CO) and Mark Takano (CA) are all openly gay. Kyrsten Sinema (AZ) was the first openly bisexual person to be elected to Congress. All of them are Democrats.
