Despite the fact that Russia is suppressing and oppressing religious and racial minorities, many in the Religious Right are praising Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin. Thus, it is not surprising to see Iowa’s Bob Vander Plaats effusively praising the Russian dictator.
Vander Plaats is the head of The Family Leader, an anti-gay group which has been trying to overturn same-sex marriage in Iowa since it became legal there in 2009.
According to Right Wing Watch, Vander Plaats, on the one hand, “Putin for appropriating American ‘strengths’ like ‘military might, decisive action, core values, morality, beliefs,’ which have now “defaulted into our weaknesses because of Barack Obama,’” while praising Putin for going after gays.
Vander Plaats praised Putin for ‘taking a stand’ against gays and saying “don’t bring this homosexual propaganda into my country for the Olympics; we believe in one man, one woman marriage; there is no homosexual marriage in Russia.”
Of course, thanks to the thugs in Russia, pretty soon there won’t be any gays in Russia, or Jews, Blacks, Asians, non-Orthodox Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, and so forth. Putin has largely ignored the thugs which have gone around beating up anyone considered to be an ‘enemy of the state’, which has largely been defined as anyone who is not an Orthodox Christian or a White Rus.
Steve Dace, the host of the program that Vander Plaats made the comments on, rejected the idea that Putin should be considered a ‘pro-family hero’ because of his recent divorce, but, of course, Vander Plaats is more interested in attacking homosexuality than he is in actually being pro-family and said “It doesn’t matter.”
During the interview, Vander Plaats states that Putin “has taken what used to be our strengths — military might, decisive action, core values, morality, beliefs — and he’s saying, those are being turned into your guys’ weakness and guess what I’m doing? I’m taking those. I’m taking decisive leadership, you’re following my lead. As a matter of fact, Obama’s now agreeing with Putin, ‘oh you know maybe we’ve got some other options here now.’ So he’s taking Putin’s lead. Putin’s saying, ‘you know what don’t bring this homosexual propaganda into my country for the Olympics; we believe in one man, one woman marriage; there is no homosexual marriage in Russia.”
Dace responds with “Says the guy that just kicked his wife of four decades to the curb.”
Vander Plaats retorts that “It doesn’t matter. He’s taken what used to be our strengths, which has now defaulted into our weaknesses because of Barack Obama, no leadership, and he’s making them his strengths and he’s emerging now on the world stage as a newly discovered leader. Ladies and gentlemen this is why you need to rise up, this is why we rise up, to demonstrate, we do have a voice in this process.”
