Cher will not be opening the Olympics despite being asked by a friend to do so. Speaking to MacLeans, Cher made it clear that she has no intention to play in Russia because of the recent explosion of anti-LGBT sentiment in that nation.
MacLeans asked Cher “What do you think about what’s going on in Russia right now?”
Cher, who has a transsexual son, replied that “I can’t name names but my friend called who is a big oligarch over there, and asked me if I’d like to be an ambassador for the Olympics and open the show. I immediately said no. I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there. He said the Russian people don’t feel the way the government does.”
It is hard to tell if he was being honest about how the people of Russia feel, but then again, it is hard to tell if the polls and surveys that have gone out claiming that Russians largely support the anti-gay policies are accurate. Unfortunately, Russia has become a dangerous place to disagree with President Vladmir Putin.
Cher has been famously linked to the LGBT Community, and is a long standing ally.
Her son, Chaz, was born Chastity, and recently transitioned from female to male.
Russia passed a law earlier this year forbidding the presentation of information related to “non-traditional relationships”, that is homosexual relationships, to children. This law has been used to ban gay pride parades, and has been used to suppress the arts. One museum was shut down and its art destroyed for depicting Putin and other officials in women’s undergarments. The police cited this particular law as why.
Russia is also considering a law that would take children away from LGBT parents. Many Conservatives in the United States such as Austin Ruse of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute have been praising Putin for his anti-gay stances all the while ignoring his repression of the journalists, Catholics, non-Orthodox Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Blacks, and Asians.
