It is quite possible that the upcoming Cheney Thanksgiving and Christmas season is going to be rife with problems after Mary Cheney struck back at her sister Lynn for saying that she is anti-same-sex marriage.

Lynn Cheney is running for the Senate in Wyoming against current Far Right Republican Mike Enzi. For his part, Enzi is extremely anti-gay.

Mary Cheney
posted on her Facebook page that “For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage.” Mary Cheney is not only the younger daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, but openly lesbian and married.

Both Dick and Mary support same-sex marriage.

Mary Cheney added that “Freedom means freedom for everyone. That means that all families — regardless of how they look or how they are made — all families are entitled to the same rights, privileges and protections as every other.”

This was all in response to statements by Liz Cheney in which she said “I am not pro-gay marriage. I believe the issue of marriage must be decided by the states, and by the people in the states, not by judges and not even by legislators, but by the people themselves.”

This is the usual cop-out and goes against the Constitution of the United States of America as well as several legal precedents. The Constitution states that each state must recognize the contracts entered into by individuals in each of the other states. This is called the Full Faith and Credit Clause. The case Loving v. Virginia, which ended racial segregation, made it clear that people remain married when they cross state lines.

Mary Cheney underscored the unfairness of this idea of voting in each state by saying that “It’s not something to be decided by a show of hands.”
