George Takei has endorsed Christine Quinn for Mayor. He backs her because she has the “experience, toughness, and heart to take us into the future.” He notes that Quinn has a talent for problem solving as well as a strong network of people whom she can call upon to help with the problems of New York City.
Takei states that Quinn “will boldly go, where no woman has gone before”, in a twist on the old Star Trek tagline.
Takei is not the only celebrity to back Quinn in her bid to become not only the first openly LGBT Mayor of New York City, but the first woman to hold that position. Quinn is the current New York City Council Speaker. Her campaign has run into some major headwinds thanks to a lot of anti-gay advertising coming from those opposed to LGBT rights.
Quinn was the frontrunner for Mayor until Anthony Weiner entered the race. After his implosion, Quinn never regained her frontrunner status as Bill de Blasio rose to that place. However, if he fails to capture 40% of the vote, he and Quinn will have to face off against each other in an October runoff.
Takei is best known for his role as Captain Hikaru Sulu in the Star Trek franchise. He has since become a celebrated LGBT rights activist best known for his catch phrase “Oh My”, and his biting sense of humor.
The election is scheduled for 10 September
