Natalie Portman was “terrified” when she had to kiss Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, That 70’s Show, Family Guy) in her new movie ‘Black Swan’. Black Swan is a movie about two rival prima ballerinas in the high stakes world of ballet dancing. In the movie (spoiler alert, only if you are planning to see the movie, which I’m pretty sure you aren’t) Portman and Kunis have a sex scene together. In an interview Portman states:

“I was terrified. At the moment I lived in a state of inner terror.”

Inner terror? Kissing a beautiful accomplished actress is terrifying? Portman who has previously shot nude scenes and played a stripper in the movie “Closer” is also worried the lesbian sex sequence is overshadowing the plot of the film and worries it will make her be taken less seriously as an actress. She added: “Nudity is something absolutely natural and I’m not prudish – but in a film it can be distracting. But stripping isn’t? Portman goes on to say:

“Doing ‘Black Swan’ I couldn’t say no. The project is a huge opportunity for me to show a new me. I can’t always play the nice mothers. My other problem is that single pictures are being taken out of context and put on the internet.” Right, Portman is always playing the nice mother, or the nice stripper. Playing a nice lesbian is a huge leap for her. There is nothing wrong with strippers, but it’s sad that Portman regards playing a lesbian as her least family friendly role.

Portman studied psychology at Harvard has a reputation for being “I can guarantee you I’m not one of the most intelligent actresses of the world.” I completely agree with you Natalie and to prove it, I’m running some of Portman’s best quotes below:

“Star Wars hasn’t changed my life at all.”

Except for the millions of dollars you made and the wooden acting that eventually will become your legacy among the millions of Star Wars fans worldwide.

“When a guy tells me I’m cute, it’s not something desirable. Cute is more like what you want your pet to be.”

Cute is awesome. We can’t all be devastatingly gorgeous in a half-fed way.

And then there was the time she compared meat lovers to rapists: I say that Foer’s ethical charge against animal eating is brave because not only is it unpopular, it has also been characterized as unmanly, inconsiderate, and juvenile. But he reminds us that being a man, and a human, takes more thought than just “This is tasty, and that’s why I do it.” He posits that consideration, as promoted by Michael Pollan in The Omnivore’s Dilemma, which has more to do with being polite to your tablemates than sticking to your own ideals, would be absurd if applied to any other belief (e.g., I don’t believe in rape, but if it’s what it takes to please my dinner hosts, then so be it).

Portman told Allure magazine in an interview, regarding being famous: “I’m not black, but I know what it feels like.” That quote speaks for itself. Natalie Portman: Not America’s Smartest Actress.

Out creator Darren Star, best known for his work on HBO’s “Sex and the City” series is being tapped by HBO to direct a biopic of anti-gay activist, Anita Bryant. Anita Bryant was a well known beauty queen, singer and celebrity spokesperson. However, her lasting legacy has been her political campaigning to further alienate the LGBT community from mainstream society.

Some illuminating quotes from Bryant, during her campaign to repeal anti-discrimination legislation in Florida are:

“What these people really want, hidden behind obscure legal phrases, is the legal right to propose to our children that theirs is an acceptable alternate way of life. [...] I will lead such a crusade to stop it as this country has not seen before.”

“As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children” and “If gays are granted rights, next we’ll have to give rights to prostitutes and to people who sleep with St. Bernards and to nail biters.”

“All America and all the world will hear what the people have said, and with God’s continued help we will prevail in our fight to repeal similar laws throughout the nation.”

Chad Hodge, who has worked on Tru Calling and Runaway, is set to write the script for the biopic. Hodge had a personal connection to Bryant, as they both went to Northwestern together. Hodge insists that Bryant has had an interesting life and is a worthy object for biopic. Despite her career being pretty mundane and overall, a failure. The most interesting thing about Bryant, is the reaction she provoked in the gay community. Gay Bars in Florida, banded together to protest Orange Juice (Bryants most widely known shilled product) by removing screw drivers from their menus and naming a drink after her.

The real question is, why is a gay director attached to a project about an anti-gay activist? We will have to wait and see.

The much anticipated Joan Jett biopic, The Runaways debuted at Sundance last night. The Runaways focuses on the all-girl group of the same name that rose to popularity in the 70’s. The film is directed by Floria Sigismondi. Which brings into full circle the “girl-power” message of the both the group and the film.

The movie has been getting a lot of attention from LGBT-ers because of the sexual orientation of Jett and the romance between her and fellow band mate Cherie Curie. In particular, there has been much coverage of the kiss between Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, the actresses who play each band member, respectively. Fanning is fifteen, so this film is great for teenagers who either are out and proud or those who are questioning and looking for role models.

The marketing campaign for The Runaways focused on Joan Jett as the center of the film, however, the film is actually based on the book “Neon Angel,” by Cherie Curie which explains the heavy focus on Curie in the film. The reviews of the movie range from “okay” to “good.” Entertainment Weekly comes down on the film for being too scattered in terms of it’s portrayal of Curie’s character and for not giving Jett’s character a deeper storyline. A few reviewers stated that they went into the movie without high hopes and came away surprised. Fanning’s ability as an actress was never in doubt. But there was concern about whether Kristen Stewart could pull off the part of Joan Jett, based on her wooden acting in the Twilight movies. Cinematical had this to say

Beware Twihards and Twi-Moms, this is not your sweet and innocent Bella. Kristen Stewart’s Joan Jett urinates on electric guitars, pops pills, snorts coke, and loves other ladies. Just a fair warning.

Quality LBQ movies are few and far between. Hopefully, The Runaways will make a bigger splash when in wide-release.
Julianne Moore is straight. She is married to director Bart Freundlich and they have two children together, a boy and a girl. However, Moore has never shied away from taking on unconventional roles, roles that perhaps most straight actresses wouldn’t want to take on. Moore first made it onto my radar when I read a quote from the actress saying that she was hungry all the time. It’s rare for an actress to admit, with that type of honesty, that she has to make that kind of sacrifice to be able to practice her craft. Moore first made it onto the LGBT radar when she starred in The Hours (2002), alongside Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep, as a closeted 50’s housewife who goes on to leave her husband and child in order to stay true to her identity. Moore’s performance was as beautiful as it was heart-wrenching and she was nominated for her work in the film by both the Screen Actors Guild and the Academy.

Moore is getting a lot of buzz for her recent choices in roles in two soon to be released movies. The film “Chloe” stars Moore and Amanda Seyfried (Momma Mia, Mean Girls) as a wife who pays an escort to seduce her husband and said escort, respectively. Recently, screen shots of the movie have surfaced showing that Seyfried’s character, at the very least, kisses Moore’s character. At first blush, the plot of Chloe sounds more suited to the playboy channel than in the repertoire of an academy award winning actress. But so does the plot of Boogie Nights, a film that earned Moore nominations from the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and the Academy. The LBQ audience has to trust that Moore would not take this role unless it depicted the community in an honest light, if not in the most flattering light.

Moore will be starring as a lesbian parent, alongside Annette Benning, in the film “The Kids are Alright.” The film centers around two lesbian parents who conceived their two children through artificial insemination with sperm purchased from a sperm bank. When the children want their biological father brought into the picture, complications arise for the family. The movie was recently shown at the Sundance Film Festival.

Moore’s three LBQ roles could not be more diverse and truly do represent the diversity among women who love women. Moore’s stable background as a heterosexual wife and mother combined with her prolific on-screen roles and artistic consistency in her acting, probably helps to account for her sustained popularity among straight audiences as well as gay. However, if this stability helps her to explore and break new ground in queer films, it proves her commitment to the LGBT community and to visibility for an often overlooked group of people.

In a refreshing change of pace, Eva Green, best known for her role as a generic Bond Girl #48923 in Quantum of Solace, expressed a desire to delve deeper into the sexuality of her lesbian character. Green is referring to her role as Ms. G, a headmistress at a boarding school, in the movie Cracks.

Cracks has been released overseas and will be released in the US in 2010. The movie focuses on Ms. G, the headmistress of a boarding school for girls. Ms. G has the admiration and respect of her students and her relationship with them borders on flirtation. However, one student in particular catches her eye leading her to cause jealousy among the other women. Green is currently making the rounds and giving interviews to promote the film. In one of her many interviews, Green states:

“The love scene is soft – I wanted to go even further. In the book, she’s more sexual. I read the book many times, which was very helpful to understand Miss G’s obsession. She’s completely obsessed in the book. She’s quite manly, she’s wearing overalls and smoking cigars! She’s more sexual. In the film, she’s very delicate, sophisticated and feminine – it’s not the same.”

I love this quote. It’s rare for anyone in Hollywood to refer to a gender-bending woman as sexy or express a desire to play a less feminine role. Most actresses giggle and talk about how the other actresses they had love scenes were “hot” or how different it was from kissing a man.

Perhaps this is because Green isn’t a Hollywood native. She’s French and created a stir when she was cast in Casino Royale as she never really fit the bond girl mode. I’m going to see the movie. I hope that it portrays it’s queer characters as well as Green does.

The LA Critics Association has named Mulholland Dr. the best film of the past decade. Mulholland Dr. is a psychological thriller that focuses on the relationship of two women (Naomi Watts and Laura Elena Harring) and the drama that ensues. The film has received critical acclaim for it’s artistic bent and the integrity of the producer’s artistic vision. Mulholland Dr. seems more well known for its confusing flashbacks and convulsive plot twists than for it’s LBQ characters.

Apparently, the video shows Ms Fox and Ms Seyfried sharing a steamy onscreen kiss in this upcoming horror movie. The movie centers around a High School student who is brutally murdered and then her body is possessed by a demon. She then goes on a killing spree targeting the boys in her school. After killing them, she devours their souls and their corpses. The movie, which comes out on 18 September, was written by Diablo Cody, and directed by Karyn Kusama. In an interview aired on Entertainment Tonight, Ms Fox plays up that the movie was written by a woman, directed by a woman, and stars two women.

With regards to the movie, Ms Fox made mention of the probability of her seducing Needy Lesnicky played by Mama Mia star Amanda Seyfried. “I eat and seduce everyone. There’s a lot of kissing everyone – boys and girls. You better put on your sexy shoes for this one,” said Ms Fox, who has been in both Transformers movies. She has, apparently, stated that she likes kissing women. Actress Julianne Moore made a similar statement around the time that her movie The Hours was released. The trailer (which follows) hypes up that seduction.

Right now, there is a lot of speculation about the young actor who plays his student Harry Potter in the wildly successful movie series based upon the books. Daniel Radcliff, responding to questions concerning his sexuality, stated that it is “good to keep them guessing.” According to Radcliff “I don’t go on any blogs or chats or anything, but my friends are demons for them, and apparently someone said: ‘Daniel Radcliffe is gay. He’s got a gay face!’ I really don’t know what a gay face is!” This statement came at a time when promotion for the sixth movie Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince was ramping into full gear ahead of its premier in the United States. Speaking to The London Paper of J.K. Rowling’s decision to finally out Dumbledore, Radcliff stated “I think it’s wonderful that Dumbledore was outed as gay … Half of me thinks Rowling just did that to see if she could p*ss off the right-wing, but I’m not sure how true that is. I think she had it planned, I think she always knew he was gay.”

Rowling took some heavy flack for the decision to publicly announce that Albus Dumbledore was gay, and that he had fallen in love with a dark wizard long before the events set forth in the series. Dumbledore has become something of an icon within the LGBT rights movement. The reader learns of Dumbledore’s love of Gellert Grindelwald in the seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, after the death of the character in the sixth.

For his part, Daniel Radcliff recently appeared on stage in the show Equus. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is currently in theaters, and the seventh book will be filmed as two separate movies.

In fact, writer/director Tina Mabry’s remarkably assured debut remains relentlessly uplifting even as it tracks the monumental struggles of an African-American family sunk into a quagmire of addiction, poverty and abuse. As the years pass and the disappointments mount, the characters still summon the courage to dream.

Achingly beautiful in its easy familiarity with heartbreak, MISSISSIPPI DAMNED proves that little victories can triumph over enormous tragedies.”

Although it is known who is responsible, an arrest has never been made. The man who was murdered was a best friend of movie director M Pink Christofalo. Shortly after his murder, in efforts to stop situations like this from happening, Christofalo put out a message asking for any victims of hate crime to contact her. The message went out through a local radio broadcast in the only available time slot Christofalo could get – the twilight hours. Despite the randomness of the radio spot, there were thousands of responses to her message via telephone and email. What was more astounding was that many, if not most, were from kids and teens.

Making a commitment to help the children of Brazil, Christofalo comitted to a project which would raise awareness of the situation and bring about change in the country.

The project gained the backing of Amnesty International, who is offering a sizeable grant towards the project, provided that Christofalo has her crew in Brazil by a certain date. Unfortunately for Christofalo, that date has since passed, and the crew is still in the U.S. The crew needs a total of $15,000 to make the journey.

With the economy as it stands finding funding for projects such as this is becoming increasingly difficult.

An initial investor in the film backed out on funding the project just days before the crew was set to leave. Short term fund raising efforts have raised $5, 500 so far, yet Christofalo finds herself $9,500 short of her goal and time running out on the Amnesty grant.

Amnesty International has extended the groups final deadline to June 23rd, when they must be in Brazil to receive the grant for production.

Should they not reach Brazil in time, the entire project will come to a halt. Unfortunately, there have been several murders and suicides since the initial radio spot, and those who have contacted the project are waiting for a miracle, for someone to show the world what is really going on in their country.

With less than one week to the deadline, Christofalo is open to donations of all sizes from one dollar and up to make their goal and get to Brazil.

Donations can be made at www.ilivekind.org through June 22nd.

Anyone interested in helping the project is encouraged to forward this article, post to your blogs and websites, or share on your social networking profiles.

I gotta say I agree with this more than I do that creepy new free Youtube movie HOME. That thing was awful. And I was pretty disheartened back when I learned about how Al Gore is pretty much making a killing on carbon credits (which is such a crap idea to support in the first place, like buying your soul into heaven). You can’t just pay someone to use part of that money to plant a tree and suddenly the poison you put into the environment doesn’t count anymore.

I believe in environmentalism for the simple fact that its the right thing to do. I don’t need to be scared stupid with crap propaganda like the Day After Tomorrow. I certainly don’t need to hear that “humanity is a cancer” screed again either. That’s taking it more than a few steps too far. That’s like those wackos like Prince Phillip who said if he was going to be reincarnated he wanted to come back as a killer virus to wipe out the overpopulation. I think this documentary raises a valid point about the position some of these policies are forcing third world nations in to, and I’m certainly to glad to be more aware of that whole side of the story now.

I definitely think we need to detoxify our environment, and treat our planet with much greater respect. But I don’t think I can listen to the doom and gloom apocalyptic fear mongering stuff seriously anymore. I want to save species, protect wildlife and natural beauty, and definitely eat and live healthier. I think we do a lot more damage to other human beings, than we do to the Earth as a whole. I think we’re a lot more fragile, and as you look at the sky rocketing cancer rates I think that is the truly urgent reason to get things on track immediately, just in case you are the type who really does need to be threatened with mass extinction in order to do the right thing.

You can read all about the backlash here on the Wikipedia page about the film. Here’s how the filmmaker defends his piece in the Telegraph:

“On March 8, Channel 4 broadcast my programme. Since then, supporters of the theory of man-made global warming have published frothing criticism. I am attacked for using an “old” graph depicting temperature over the past 1,000 years. They say I should have used a “new” graph – one used by Al Gore, known as the “hockey stick”, because it looks like one.

But the hockey stick has been utterly discredited. The computer programme used to generate it was found to produce hockey-stick shapes even when fed random data (I refer readers to the work of McIntyre & McKitrick and to the Wegman Report, all available on the internet). Other than the discredited hockey stick, the graph used by us (and published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) is the standard, accepted record of temperature in this period.

A critic claims that one of the graphs cited by us, illustrating the extraordinarily close correlation between solar variation and temperature change, has since been “corrected”. It most certainly has not. The graph was produced by Prof Eigil Friis-Christensen, the head of the Danish National Space Centre, who says it still stands. But if the global-warmers don’t like that graph, there are plenty of others that say the same thing.

No one any longer seriously disputes the link between solar activity and temperature in earth’s climate history. I urge readers to look up on the net: Veizer, Geoscience Canada, 2005; and Soon, Geophysical Research Letters, 2005.

In the film, we used three graphs depicting temperature change in the 20th century. On one there was an error in the dates on the bottom. This was corrected for the second transmission of the programme, on More4, last Monday. It made no difference. Global-warmers can pick whichever graph they like. The problem for them remains the same. The temperature rise at the beginning of the century (prior to 1940, when human emissions of CO2 were relatively insignificant) was as great, most graphs show greater, than the temperature rise at the end of the century.

So what else do they hit me with? Prof Carl Wunsch, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who appeared in the film, later claimed he was duped into taking part. He was not.

The remarkable thing is not that I was attacked. But that the attacks have been so feeble. The ice-core data was the jewel in the global-warming crown, cited again and again as evidence that carbon dioxide ‘drives’ the earth’s climate. In fact, as its advocates have been forced to admit, the ice-core data says the opposite. Temperature change always precedes changes in CO2 by several hundred years. Temperature drives CO2, not the other way round. The global-warmers do not deny this. They cannot.

During the post-war economic boom, while industrial emissions of CO2 went up, the temperature went down (hence the great global-cooling scare in the 1970s). Why? They say maybe the cooling was caused by SO2 (sulphur dioxide) produced by industry. But they say it mumbling under their breath, because they know it makes no sense. Thanks to China and the rest, SO2 levels are far, far higher now than they were back then. Why isn’t it perishing cold?

Too many journalists and scientists have built their careers on the global-warming alarm. Certain newspapers have staked their reputation on it. The death of this theory will be painful and ugly. But it will die. Because it is wrong, wrong, wrong.”

All together, pretty interesting. And I still think that protecting our environment is a good thing, a great thing even. I just don’t want to see corporatism hijack another good cause, and pervert it into another cash cow that they’ll just milk dry, and leave dead on our front yard.

So what do you think? Did this video make you think of things any differently? Did you see HOME and think it was incredibly annoying too, btw? I think Planet Earth is by far the best of the best when it comes to an Environmental Doc. The images are so gorgeous, how much inspiration do we need to get our act together, anyway?

There is a film crew working on a documentary that tells the story of hate crimes against gays and lesbians in Brazil, a country that leads the world in these attacks; in hopes that the film will bring about significant change in Brazil and throughout the world.

The film is being offered a grant by Amnesty International, and will be shown at The Sundance Film Festival (along with 18 other international film festivals).

The film is receiving story after story of abuse, rape, and more. Here is one such letter written to the film producers recently…

I hope this is the correct email address for the documentary
movie. There have been some talks in the chat groups but I didn’t
copy the conversation about it.
This is not easy like I thought it would be.
Yesterday was my birthday. I turned seventeen years old. I hate
birthday parties for me. My mother calls my neighbors and invites
everybody she can to our house. I don’t know too many of the
people but my mother says I should be friends with them. She
always invites a lot of boys.
I think they act stupid with me. They’re really stupid and ask me
to kiss them or they’re very mean and tell me I’m not like a
normal girl.
I know they hate me. I know everybody hates me! Maybe not my
friends at the gas station. No they don’t hate me, but everyone
else does.
Everyone at my school! Yes, they hate me so much. When my teacher
sees me walking, he always calls me “Boy”. He hates me. “Are you
a girl or a boy? Watch where you are walking! Boy! You are sick”.
Ana likes me. She’s the only one at school.
She moved with her family here in the start of last year. When I
saw her asking for directions at the bus stop I helped her. Then
she invited me to have dinner at her house.
I wish I had her family! Her parents were so nice. So opposite
from my parents. One day at her house, we kissed. She said it was
okay. Her parents didn’t say anything bad when she told them. I
remember it finally made me feel good to be alive.
That’s when I asked her to meet my friend’s at the gas station.
We went there almost every day after I have dinner at Ana’s
house. It was our place to hang out. I knew that everyone would
like her and they did. We don’t have to hide there because the
local people use the station in town.
Two months ago, Ana was with me and my friends at the gas
station.
One boy from church named Eric came to put gas in his car. I
didn’t know if he saw me, but I could feel my heart beat too
fast.
All my friends were having a good time after he left, but I had a
terrible feeling inside.
Ana’s dad didn’t pick us up, so we walked home.
I heard a car very slow come close to us, “Hey boys”. I saw it
was Eric in his car with two other guys from my mom’s church with
him.
I said very low to Ana “run”, but she was telling me I had to be
calm. When I heard the doors of the car open, I felt a shot
inside me and I ran so fast. Faster than I ever had.
I looked for Ana but the two guys were holding her arms and Eric
was tearing her dress.
I am not a big person. I am skinny but that makes me fast and
when I saw Ana, I ran back to her with all my energy and I kicked
Eric between his legs.
I saw one boy let go of Ana’s arm and when he did this she shook
herself loose from the other boy. Then she ran faster that I
think she’s run in whole entire life.
I think the boy who was holding Ana or maybe someone else kicked
my back because I fell on my knees like in a prayer position. I
felt a foot kick my stomach. My head started to feel very hot
after that and I think I fell asleep.
I woke up later but only with my eyes. I could feel my face was
glued to the street. Maybe because my blood was drying on the
ground so it was hard to lift my head.
There was no sensation in my entire body. Like you could put a
needle through me and I know I wouldn’t feel anything.
I tried to walk, but I fell many times.
Suddenly, I opened my eyes again and I was inside the hospital.
A nurse came and told me that a couple called an ambulance for
me. She told me that there was a policeman in the hospital, if I
wanted to talk to him she would call him for me.
I remember he looked very clean. Too clean to be a regular police
officer. Especially because we were in the hospital.
He told the nurse he had to speak with me in private and she left
me with him. Something felt bad about the way he closed the door
behind her. Then I felt very afraid because he locked the door.
He came very close to my bed and put his hands on me. He said
that Eric was a good boy from church and that his father was
going to be the mayor soon.
I said to him that Eric raped me with his friends.
He laughed so loud. It was like bells in my head. I felt like I
saw the devil in his face. I don’t remember really crying, but I
do remember how the cuts on my face burned.
He put his hands under the blanket and he touched my thighs very
close to my-
He kept touching me. He said, “you didn’t get raped, dumb girl.
You know you want to be a boy and boys don’t rape boys”.
When he left the room I wanted to die. I didn’t speak to any
person after that. Not even to say “hello”.
My father took me home. He stopped the car in front of our house
to talk with me. “I knew this was gonna happen with the way you
are”.
He cried.
I never saw my father cry. Before he got out of the car he said,
“it would have been better if you died”.
In my bedroom I looked in the mirror to see my body after
everything. Like a Frankenstein monster.
My shoulder looked like a quilt my mother made.
Leftover pieces of me sewn together to try making me whole again.
Then I cried because I think I noticed that I have never been
whole.
Except with Ana.
I dialed her house number so fast. A million thoughts started to
grow in my mind when her mother answered.
She told me they sent Ana to Sao Paulo and were selling their
house to move. Her voice sounded tired.
“I’m so sorry for what happened to you. Ana told me you saved her
life and for this I will pray for you forever. I hope you survive
this and leave to a better place one day. I’m sorry I can’t help
but your parents have threatened to take us to court if we speak
with you more.”
Now I understand what people mean when they say their heart
breaks because I am very sure I felt mine begin to crack with her
words.
I didn’t get a chance to say anything. Ana’s mom hung up the
phone.
I’m not very sure about what to do. My mother says I should
pretend all of this didn’t happen to me and maybe I can go out
with a boy from our church now.
I was very mad… I am very mad because she knows the boys who did
this to me. They are from our church!
I hate to be such a terrible problem for everyone.
Maybe it’s better if I am dead. I’m scared now.
I don’t think I’m strong enough for this life.

This film, directed by M Pink Christofalo, will show a variety of first-hand accounts from adolescents who have been brutalized by society as well as their families.

It will also follow some of their aggressors and even community leaders who advocate these crimes. Over half of the victims of these attacks are kids under the age of 18.

The film is scheduled to begin shooting within the following weeks and needs your help!

The film crew needs to reach Brazil and accept their grant from Amnesty International. Even small gifts of $10 or $20 will help this crew get to Brazil to make this movie, and save these kids’ lives.

Tax-deductible donations can be made at www.ilivekind.org.

Any gift of $100 or more will get your name, or the name of someone you love, in the credits of the movie (or even someone you hate- it’s up to you!).

If you are strapped for money, and still want to help, the best way to do that would be to forward this message on to as many people as you know.

Together we can make history, save lives, and make this world a safer, better place for everybody.

You can read more about the film on MySpace or make a standard Donation to the project at iLiveKind.org.

This review is, however, something of a unique experience. My mother Linda, who has stood beside me throughout my transition and my life, wanted to also write a review on this movie from her perspective. My mother grew up with Star Trek. She was in college when it premiered back in 1966. What follows are her views on the new movie, and they will be followed by my views. However, there are some details that some people may not like to hear before they watch the movie.

L.S. Carbonell:

On my bookshelves there are four versions of the legend of King Arthur, written over a period of nearly five centuries, along with a book detailing the historical origins of the legend. I saw Camelot on Broadway in 1961 and have seen too many Arthurian movies to remember. Not one version comes close to depicting a 6th century Celto-British High King of the West Country, but they are all King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

I saw the very first and all subsequent episodes of the original Star Trek series on their original air dates. I have seen all the movies and all the series, including the animated one. I am an original Trekkie and I don’t like being called a Trekker. So, for all you purists who are appalled by the new version of Star Trek, I have only one thing to say: get over it.

My favorite Robert Burns quote is “Oh, would some power the giftie give us, to see ourselves as others see us. It would from many a blunder free us, and foolish notion.” That is the true power of science fiction, the facility to view humanity from someone else’s perspective. That is what Gene Roddenberry did, sometimes subtly, sometimes with a sledgehammer, in the original series. Roddenberry had a vision of the future – an Earth that had eliminated war, poverty and disease, whose diverse cultures co-existed without one being dominant and that had learned to allow all sentient beings the opportunity to make their mistakes and evolve according to their own timelines, without our interference. It was pretty heady stuff in 1966, as the war in Vietnam was ratcheting up to its highest level and the streets of America were filled with violent protest. Star Trek showed us what a people could do to themselves if they allowed bigotry to devolve into genocide; what would happen if a civilian population was kept ignorant of the costs of war; how a culture could be warped and corrupted when another culture tried to impose its structure and mores upon it. And Jim Kirk had a helluva of a cute ass, even though polite girls couldn’t say that aloud.

Roddenberry’s vision is pretty heady stuff today for entirely different reasons. This is not the Earth of 1966. It is a new millennium with a whole new set of old problems. I would lay bets that if Roddenberry were alive today, the first lesson he would want to teach us is that you cannot keep throwing the same “solutions” at a problem and hoping for a different result. Wait a minute….isn’t that the lesson of the Kobyashi Maru?

King Arthur has been repeatedly rewritten to reflect the realities of the times the authors lived in, from Geoffrey of Monmouth sucking up to a half-Welsh usurper to the English throne to Marion Zimmer Bradley turning Morgan le Fay into the original feminist. For Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry’s vision of mankind’s potential to survive, it must also be rewritten to match the realities of our new world. Hence, Jim Kirk is raised by a widowed mother and a stepfather, like so many of America’s children. Bones is a disillusioned man who lost everything in his divorce, something only vaguely alluded to in the old incarnation, but painfully present in our society. Scotty, Uhuru, Sulu and Chekov are fully-realized partners in an ensemble, not just underlings for Kirk, Spock and McCoy to play off. That is something we need to see, that any successful enterprise (pun intended) is the work of all the participants, not just some CEO who never worked the assembly line. George Takai is cuter than the new Sulu, but the new cast is wonderful. They conveyed the spirit of the original characters without doing impressions of the actors. Special kudos to Karl Urban for his ability to capture the essence of DeForest Kelly’s almost-but-not-quite Southern accent.

I can not only live with this new incarnation of my beloved Star Trek, I cried through most of it. That’s the talisman. For thirty years, if I have cried during a Star Trek movie or the first episode of a new series, it was successful. I want Gene Roddenberry’s hopes and dreams for mankind’s future to survive, and if that means going to an alternative time/space continuum, make it so. I am and always shall be a fan.

And the fact that Majel Barrett Roddenberry spend some of the last days of her life giving her voice to the Enterprise computer is the greatest endorsement this movie could have. She was the only true guardian of Gene’s legacy and keeper of the Star Trek flame.

My Perspective:

“It’s a future where no one discriminates against you or takes away your rights if you are different than they are.”

James T. Kirk is a man raised by his widowed mother and his step father. Spock is a refugee whose home has been destroyed and his people nearly annihilated. Leonard McCoy is now really a bitter man who lost everything in the divorce. Nyota Uhura is now a brilliant xeno-linguist. Hikaru Sulu can kick ass with a sword. Pavel Chekhov is now a wiz-kid who appears to have an affinity for video games. This is not the Star Trek that many of us grew up with. However, this makes Star Trek relevant to a whole new generation of viewers. These are characters that people in my generation will understand and latch on to. How many in my generation grew up in broken homes? How many refugees are in this world today?

It was the cartoonist Darrin Bell who reminded me of what Star Trek was all about, and that is his quote I started my section with. Bell is a life long Star Trek fan. He wrote an obituary for Jimmy Doohan that ran in his strip.

I grew up with Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. They were my Star Trek, and they worked for the era. I remember the second episode of DS9 clearly when Kira Nerys is forced to confront her own prejudices and deal with the very notion that just because someone is from the ‘oppressor’ does not mean that they are bad. Star Trek has shaped my life, and become an almost constant in the cultural fabric of the world today. There are Star Trek references all around us today. I play World of Warcraft, and there are, of course, a couple dozen references to Star Trek laced within the game.

For many of us, this will give Star Trek the chance to go back and address issues that many of us face in our daily lives. The new writers can do it either through the crew or through new characters. Perhaps there will be mention of sexual identity and gender identity issues. The best way I can think for that to happen would be through one of the alien races. After all, it has been established that Andorians have a different marriage structure than humans. It could be interesting to see that play out.

Like my mother, I too cried several times throughout the movie, something that I have done since the sixth movie.

The movie’s effects are, indeed, updated for the current technology. However, one thing that most people forget is that good science-fiction is not built upon the technology, but instead is built upon the story. If the story is good, the technology is not important. So, the ship looking as it does is wonderful.

Zoe Saldana, who steps into the role of Nyota Uhura, called the experience “humbling”. Saldana mother was a major Star Trek fan and kept giving her advice on playing Uhura. Indeed, for many of the actors stepping into these iconic roles, the experience must have been terrifying.

For me, the one thing that I am happy about is that Star Trek will continue on, and that it will get to hold up a new mirror to the world. It is a world that is different from the one that Gene Roddenberry first wrote in, but it is a world which still needs Star Trek.

The movie is based on the life of gay activist Harvey Milk, and was rejected by the Censor Board after it was presented by one of the local movie stores for approval.

Principal Censor Leiataua Niuapu Faaui confirmed the board had rejected the application, and the movie would not be distributed in movie stores in Samoa.

When asked why the board rejected the application, Leiataua declined to comment saying he needed the approval of the Censorship Board chairman to comment.

Local movie stores have had regular requests for the movie, and one movie store manager is asking for answers.

Eteuati Junior Esau, General Manager of Movies4U, the largest chain of movie stores in the country said “I really just want a reason why, because my customers are demanding this movie.”

Esau says he does not understand why the movie has been banned, since it had great reviews, won numerous awards and is based on a true story.

“I was expecting some good sales from that movie,” Esau said.

Ken Moala, a well known Human Rights Activist in Samoa, says banning the movie is uncalled for.

“I do not think it should be banned. It is basically a documentary about the human endeavour to conquer something that people tend to discriminate against,” Moala said.

“It’s really harmless, I don’t know how it would affect Samoan lifestyle. It is totally different and not applicable to here, it is pretty tame really.”

Moala says sometimes the Censorship Board does censor the wrong movies.

Principle Censor, Leiataua says he is willing to comment on the matter after gaining approval, but the decision to ban Milk in Samoa is final.

The movie is the directorial debut for Nicolas Cage, with an intriguing trailer and look into the trouble with love and romance. One storyline in the movie includes a lesbian encounter between Davis and co-star Portia Dawson. When asked about the movie by the World Entertainment News Network Davis mentioned the scene telling WENN “I’m not into girls and the scene was not easy for me. It was definitely a challenge.” Now, I don’t know if you have ever seen Portia Dawson, but she is a hottie! I know there are plenty of lesbian actresses who would have loved to play Josie Davis’ role just for a chance to romp around with Portia Dawson a little.

To add insult to injury look what else she told WENN:

“It was really hot on the set, temperature wise; I think it was 103 degrees or something, and I had this girl on top of me with this long hair and it was in my face and we’re sticky and sweaty and she was dripping on me.”

I’m thinking “Uh huh.. keep talking… I’m followin ya…”

Then she goes on to say, “It was just ridiculous.”

Gasp!

And then “I hear other girls who say, ‘Oh, I just do it.’ I think they were out drinking or something.”

Are you kidding Josie Davis!?!?

Portia Dawson is on top of you, dripping with sweat and her long hair is in your face…

Don’t you know that is many a lesbian’s fantasy??

Girrrrlll… move over honey! You need to take a pass on those roles in the future and let a lesbian actress have a crack at it. I am sure we would do the scene justice – as long as we can get rid of that guy in the middle.

They are all nominated for Best Picture.

The Oscar nominations came out today in the shadow of the second day of the Obama Presidency, and among those getting a nod is the bio pic of Harvey Milk, the slain gay rights activist and city supervisor of San Francisco. Milk is nominated for eight awards total. Most notably, it has been nominated for best original screenplay. Dustin Lance Black grabbed the nod for what is his very first major screenplay, a nod which normally goes to veteran screenwriters. It also garnered a best actor nod for Sean Penn who played Harvey Milk, best supporting actor for Josh Brolin who played Milk’s assassin Dan White, and Gus Van Sandt for best director.

Black, who was born in 1974, was raised in a Mormon household and first learned of Harvey Milk and his activism after his family moved from Texas to the San Francisco bay area. When he first learned about Milk, he was still deeply repressing his sexuality, and has come to feel that learning about Milk helped to save his life.

The nominations surrounding Benjamin Button, and Slumdog Millionaire drowned out much of the victory that surrounds the nominations for Milk. The Dark Knight grabbed eight nominations to stand along side Milk. Dark Knight’s nods included a posthumous nod to Heath Ledger who gave a memorable portrayal of Batman’s most famous nemesis The Joker.

Dear Friends,

As many of you know, The Trevor Project honored both Sigourney Weaver and Lifetime Networks at Cracked Xmas 11 last month. These honorees were chosen in part for starring in and releasing the groundbreaking film, Prayers for Bobby. Sigourney Weaver stars in this Lifetime Original Movie, based on a true story and Leroy Aarons’ book of the same name. The film tells the story of Mary Griffith, a profoundly religious wife and mother who begins to question her faith after the suicide of her gay son.

On Saturday, January 24, 2009, Prayers for Bobby will premiere on Lifetime Television. In honor of this important film, I hope you will consider hosting or attending a Prayers for Bobby Viewing Party. Using our Viewing Party Toolkit, it’s easy to organize a screening in your home that can also raise vital funds for The Trevor Project, so that every “Bobby” in this country has a safe place to turn in times of crisis and despair.

Prayers for Bobby poignantly encompasses the heart of The Trevor Project’s mission and the reasons why our programs and services are so important. It also includes important references to our friends at Parents, Families, & Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), an organization that played an important role in Mary Griffith’s experience. PFLAG will be hosting its own official Prayers for Bobby viewing parties in order to maximize viewership of this touching film.

Lifetime is available on all basic cable networks, so check local listings to find the channel and air time in your community. Don’t forget to let us know about your viewing party by sending photos, guest lists/sign-in sheets and notes.

I look forward to hearing about your reaction to Prayers for Bobby, and hope you and your friends are as inspired by it as I was.

All my best,

Charles Robbins
Executive Director/CEO

Warner Brothers’ Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey and Zooey Deshanel, is in theaters December 19th.

You have to keep an eye/ear open for the film’s fictitious band Munchausen by Proxy, with band members Zooey Deschanel, fabulous actress/singer, and San Francisco’s very own Von Iva (Jillian, Kelly & Becky). Although the band was made-up for the film, Munchausen by Proxy is totally legit, as these four musicians created four songs for the film which are also available on the soundtrack.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 136px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BW6gA1NCZZI/SUmunkHAH2I/AAAAAAAABEM/s8VKajDi4jw/s400/VonIvalogo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280944032799792994" /> Von Iva’s recently released EP is called Girls on Film and they are in fact living up to its title. This is their first time on the big screen but they were also featured in an episode of the Logo Channel’s Curl Girls, in which they also wrote the theme song for. If you’ve yet to see these girls perform live, make it your New Year’s Resolution. Going to a Von Iva show is like going to a non-stop dance party

It stars Academy Award Winner Sean Penn as Harvey Milk. What struck me the most while watching the film were all the similarities to what gays and lesbians are struggling with today.

In the movie, which takes place in the mid to late 1970’s, the discrimination against LGBT people was fierce. Police would raid bars to round up gays and have them arrested. The physical violence they faced at that time was much worse and not stopped by the police.

However, one of the big struggles shown in the movie was the struggle against the religious right. It wasn’t over marriage but over protection in the work place. It was fascinating to watch and realize that history is repeating itself. I’m watching as Harvey Milk is telling everyone,

You must come out. Everyone must come out.”

I had just finished having dinner with friends and all of us discussing how many people we knew we had influenced to vote against the marriage ban just because we had come out to them. The fact is if you build relationships with people it makes them think before they vote. It puts a face on who the vote is against – makes it personal.

It was such a powerful experience. The gay rights movement has made strides, but at the same time it seems we are having the same debate 30 years later. I was left wondering, who will our generation’s Harvey Milk be. There is clearly the same desire to come together and fight. So who will be the voice of our generation?

I say we all need to be. What I took away from the movie was it can’t be about one person, but about all of us. We must all learn to use our voice. We must use it to come out. We must use it to help others reach for equality. Most importantly, we must use it to demand our equality. We must say as Harvey Milk said,

“Enough is enough!!”

I <strike>encourage</strike> implore everyone to please go see this movie. More importantly make everyone you know go see it. When it comes out on DVD have “Milk” house parties. The story and the message in this movie speaks to what is happening now and will touch people and make them think.

Funny, I guess Harvey Milk may turn out to be the leader and voice of another generation.
