07-10-2011 by Linda S. Carbonell

The question of “what is in the garment bag?” was answered when Princess Catherine stepped from their limo onto the red carpet outside the restored Belasco Theater in a pale lavender, elegant, classic Grecian gown, with boat neck, cap sleeves and a matching beltby Alexander McQueen. She definitely made some of the guests look under-dressed and over-exposed.

The “Brits to Watch” event hosted by BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) was a red carpet to match the Oscars. Prince William opened the event with “I would like to thank Colin Firth for my perfect opening line – I have a voice,” quoting from The King’s Speech, the Oscar winning film about his great-grandfather, George VI. The gathering was an opportunity for the power players in Hollywood to meet 42 new British actors, producers, writers and videogame designers. “Please give them the opportunities that you have always extended to some of the brightest and best that Britain has to offer. When American and British creative talent gets together, magic happens. Let’s continue the winning formula.”

Writer-actor Stephen Fry, who has a recurring role on Bones as Gordon Gordon, expressed the opinion that promoting British talent while the royals were in town was brilliant. “Royalty creates a glamour, prestige and luster that trumps anything Hollywood can produce.”

The guest list was formidible – Barbara Streisand and James Brolin, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Jack Black, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, Ioan Gruffudd and Alice Evans, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Garner, chef Gordon Ramsey, James Gandolfini, Piers Morgan and dozens of stars, producers and executives. It was also a charity event, with a table going for $25,000.

Following the event, the couple took a few minutes to mingle with the fans gathered outside.

The BAFTA event and the reception Friday night at the home of Consul-General Dame Barbara Hay were the only celebrity-filled events planned for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Today they will be visiting a youth center in Los Angeles’ Skid Row, an area of old LA known as the homeless capital of America, and a job fair for discharging military personnel.

Ok, Ladies, I must overtly admit… I get it. I get why you attend volleyball games. Spandex is hot. I also understand the passion for women’s soccer and their muscular behinds. And I suppose there is even a point to those long basketball shorts, short tennis skirts, and thick softball legs, but…

Don’t you ever just want to watch a woman tackle the absolute shit out of another? See the frustrations in their eyes and the bulging muscles in their arms? Women who literally lay-out every last one of their opponents and leave it all on the field? Blood, sweat, tears, and skin included? How about 11 of them? Or better yet, 22.

The time has come. Actually, the time has been here for years without the deserving recognition. In fact, women have been playing tackle football since the 1920s, but with the constant banter and anti-feminist remarks, such teams were banned and forbidden to compete.

Good news, though, Babe! Women’s tackle football is back, and it is here to stay! Beginning as early as the 1990s, multiple leagues have been forming across the United States, including the WFA (“Women’s Football Alliance”), IWFL (“Independent Women’s Football League”), UFL (“United Football League”), and NWFA (“National Women’s Football Association”). (Unfortunately, the likelihood of these individual leagues joining one unified league is slim to none due to numerous disagreements.)

As just one example of the popularity and competitiveness of these leagues, in the WFA alone, there are over 60 teams nationwide. From the Arizona Assassins to the Minnesota Machine, this specific league functions distinctly under the strict NFL rules. Touchbacks, safeties, touchdowns, and field goals. Penalties, flags, offsides, and facemasking. Women’s tackle football is something worth watching.

(I think this just adds to the list of ways that women are equal [cough-cough-superior-sniffle] to men.)

So get out there and support your local women’s tackle football team! If you want more information on this or other gay-thletes, please feel free to contact me, Alex Fox, at theunluckyfox@gmail.com.

There are some sporadic reports that there have been some problems with the CD keys from the recent launch of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. The problem appears when the purchaser of the game tries to enter the key into Blizzard’s system and upgrade their account. This is only happening with physical copies purchased at stores, and appears to be limited to the West Coast, but that is unclear.

One customer who contacted me at LGR has had this happen was told by a Blizzard worker that the company does know about the problem. So far, Blizzard has not released any kind of statement regarding it. This particular customer did not have a decent encounter with Blizzard tech support, and the person they talked to refused to allow this customer to talk to a supervisor. Blizzard has a spotty record with customer service.

It is unclear if these defective keys have been stolen and the games compromised by people opening the packages and using the game keys or if this is something else. Other popular games have had similar problems in the past with keys being stolen and games being compromised before they are sold. Without official word as to what is going on or what is wrong, Blizzard has left many loyal customers holding the bag and wondering what to do.

Blizzard is requiring physical scans of the packaging, the key code (found on the disk’s sleeve), and the receipt in order to prove that you have purchased the game with that particular key. If that is provided, then they will provide a new key.

Blizzard should have issued some form of warning so that people would know that this was happening and use caution or at least to make the process smoother once someone discovered that they had a faulty or stolen CD key.

It launched today. . .that is right. . .IT launched today. Blogs everywhere across the globe are feeling the traffic pinch as hordes of rabid Horde and legions of rabid Alliance spend the day ‘ooo’-ing and ‘awe’-ing over Mt. Hyjal, Lost Isles, and all the new content in World of Warcraft. It is, apparently, the smoothest launch of an expansion yet. My copy should arrive tomorrow. Besides, I got to see it all when I got in to Beta and I had a blast. Pretty soon, I’ll begin to reconstruct my toons from Beta in order to have those toons on Live.

Overall the expansion is good. I have to report that it is a strong expansion and many people will enjoy running it right up until they hit the level cap a dozen times or so. This will be despite the heteronormative problems of still having no choice about your Goblin significant other, or some of the rather off colour jokes that are laced throughout the game. Those have not changed, and they are not likely to any time soon- or probably at all.

Cataclysm will, undoubtably, be a wild success. It will probably smash records as the fan base converge to obliterate the stock held by many a business, but it does hold that one problem with it. It still holds on to the male-centered and heteronormative beliefs that the average player is, somehow, a white, male, heterosexual teenager. Even those races where women are suppose to be far more empowered than the average even within the game, the tendency is towards women who are still far more eye candy for young men than strong voices for women.

Blizzard is still not bad about it, and far from the worst. There are far, far worse games out there towards women, but there are, of course, some far better. The same holds true for the lesbian and gay players. Blizzard has grown better about women, for instance. If you look at the armor from The Burning Crusade expansion, it is obvious to see that the whole ‘metal bikini’ was popular. It also drew some rather vocal complaints from the female gamer base. LGBT friendly guilds are out there now even though, at one point, they ran into some huge problems.

Slowly, women and LGBT gamers are making inroads.

Still, I plan on enjoying Cataclysm when it finally arrives.

I hope my fellow players out there will do so as well, and maybe Blizzard will start taking heed of some of these posts like mine to start nudging the game in a bit more female and LGBT friendly direction.

Titles such as The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 allowed same-sex couples to marry and adopt children. Other games have allowed same-sex couples to develop relationships, and engage in romances. This is also happening at the same time that many a game company is beginning to realize just how strong the female market is within the gaming community and that what we want is not frills and lace but leather and steel.

In the upcoming title “Fable III”, which is an X-Box exclusive game, the protagonist Prince of Albion can cozy up with his husband, Kyle the Blacksmith, if he so chooses, and the couple can even adopt children. In fact, except for the adoption part, players have been able to woo members of the same-sex in this franchise since it debuted in 2004. The adoption part is new to this latest instalment.

The romantic side of the story is not integral to the narrative as a whole. Peter Molyneux, the creative director at Microsoft Game Studio Europe stated “We don’t require you to be of a certain type to get married. You can be gay. You can be bisexual. You can get married as many times as you like. It’s up to you. My fascination is with what that means to people. It means they can be who they are rather than who I require them to be.” Molyneux is part of the developers at Lionhead Studios.

“The Sims”, which is a virtual dollhouse franchise from Electric Arts and Maxis, has had same-sex relationships since one of the expansion packs for the first game which was released back in 2000. Back then, same-sex couples could kiss and cuddle. In the sequel to that first game, “The Sims 2″, couples could move in and get a civil union. They could also adopt. In “The Sims 3″, same-sex couples can get married. It is probable that they still cannot have ‘biological’ children via sperm banks and surrogacy.

“Fallout 2″ was the first game to feature same-sex marriage, and that was released all the way back in 1998.

On the MMO level, the game Lord of the Rings Online had a strong debate over allowing for same-sex marriages in the game, but decided to keep to strictly to the lore that was available meaning that it is restricted in their game to male/female and the partners can only be human or elf.

As for opening up the market for women a bit more in games, many games now include the ability to play as either a male or female character. When the Diablo franchise out of Blizzard first emerged, the players were limited to two male and one female characters. Diablo II had three female characters and four male characters. Diablo III will include a male and female form for every character class. Blizzard has also indicated that they are beginning work on different forms for the Druid class’s transformation to indicate both male and female toons.

Homophobia and misogyny are still rather rampant throughout the gaming world. Women are often seen as being incapable of performing certain roles within the game and are often encouraged to take up healing roles within the game and many women end up playing male characters to get away from being hit on and being helped by over eager male players who rush in and kill an almost dead mob. Homophobic epithets are common, and often used to try and degrade other players, and often go well beyond the use of the term ‘gay’ in a derogatory fashion.
For the most part, actual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters developed by the creators of games tend to be rare. Jeb Havens believes that there are few such characters because developers and publishers are afraid of offending consumers. Havens, who is a game designer and chairman of the International Game Developers Association’s LGBT committee, does not expect homosexuality to be included in the main plot of a game anytime soon, but does feel that the industry is, by and large, liberal.

He stated “I think the formula that’s working for the big publishers who have LGBT content is that it’s an option if the player consciously seeks it out. That way there’s no fear of a backlash from players who might think they’re being forced to play as a gay character or being forced to fall in love with another guy just to play through the game.”

While such choice has not been apparent in some aspects of some games (Such as the Goblin starting area in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm) it is apparent in other aspects of the same game (Such as one quest where the player has to choose between a group of male and female admirers to take with you).

BioWare is busy working on a sequal for the fantasy role-play sequel to Dragon Age: Origins. In that title, players could choose to enter into a same-sex relationship with specific characters. David Gaider, who is lead writer in this Dragon Age sequel has not specified entirely what is going to happen to please the LGBT players in the new title due out next year, but stated “As we were working on the four characters that you could have a romance with in the game, we wondered why couldn’t we expand the audience a little bit? We weren’t creating characters so players could have gay romances. That’s not really how our creative process works. If we were doing that, I think we would have gone about it a bit differently.

“Some LGBT players liked what we did in ‘Origins,’ and others didn’t. The only thing that would really disappoint them is to completely abandon it. We’re not doing that. There’s some things you don’t want to fundamentally change. If we’re being inclusive of any group of fans, we’re not going to suddenly throw them out on the streets.”

Gaider did not want to explain whether or not the protagonist of the new game will be able to pursue a same-sex relationship off the battlefield, but he did promise that there will be “something for LGBT players to appreciate.”

For those who follow gaming, many know that right now is Blizzcon, which means that World of Warcraft Beta is not exactly high on the priorities list for anyone who could afford tickets or bought the live stream. Since I could not afford either, I am kind of left grabbing what is out there and I can read about. While I primarily play World of Warcraft these days- an extension of my D&D days, I came back into video gaming (I use to own an Atari back in the day) was Diablo and Diablo II. What is fun is that these have been the only games that I actually played for more than six months with me finally having to retire my Diablo disks when I moved to Windows XP and my Diablo II disks when I moved to Windows Vista.

One of the things that has changed a lot since Diablo and Diablo II came out is the number of female player characters available and the roles that they can play. In Diablo, there was one female character- the Rogue, and she was pretty much the archer. In Diablo II, there were a total of three- Amazon, Sorceress and Assassin. One of the nice things is that Diablo III finally gives us ladies the ability to choose to be female in all of the character classes.

Setting aside my ‘lesbian cap’ for a moment, and just speaking purely as a woman, I have been glad that as games have progressed, female characters are a touch more common, but they are still lagging behind over all. There is still a tendency to assume that women do not play video games, or if they do, they want something fairly frilly.

What got me thinking about this is that Blizzard has released the information on their fifth and final initial class for Diablo III, and she is something of a real bad ass. While there will be a male counterpart, it is nice to see that the initial role out for the Demon Hunter is female.

A while back, I wrote about Blizzard’s problems with heteronormative thinking. I have since had to revise that thinking and begin to see a certain amount of decentralization to how the game is created. There are some zones that have almost male-centered humor to them that can be quite wearying including a quest called “A Taste for Tail”, and flavor text about giving a female NPC a case of crabs. There is also a quest line in the revamped Badlands called The Day that Deathwing Came whereby the player gets to choose which one of a handful of admirers get to come along with Martek the Exiled on his mechanohog. One of the admirers is a male Blood Elf.

I am, I must admit, thrilled to see the Demon Hunter as a class, and looking at this dual crossbow wielding warrior woman, I finally feel a real desire to play Diablo III when it finally comes out after eons in development. I am, in my heart, an Artemis kind of gal, and love the bow more than I do the sword.

It is through these games that I get in touch with a way to stabilize how I feel inside. To let the woman warrior in me rise. I am, in my life, shy and even fearful. This has always given me a way to feel better.

Cultural literacy is one of those two edged swords which can be wonderful when one gets the joke, but can be bitter if the reference is ultimately of something hurtful. As people know, I was recently invited into the World of Warcraft Beta for Cataclysm. There are numerous references scattered throughout the game such as to the Indiana Jones series of movies with both a human named Harrison Jones and a Blood Elf named Belloc, a reference to Rene Belloq from The Raiders of the Lost Ark. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of references throughout the game from Goonies to Star Trek to The Day The Earth Stood Still. Then there are the references to Deliverance. . .

These two references actually made me cringe. They refer to the rather infamous dialogue from the movie in which the character of Bobby is order to “squeal like a pig.” Cultural literacy is wonderful, but then there is the realization that these specific references relate to a man being brutally raped and sodomized. It is an outgrowth, I should say, of some of the problems within the gaming community. As many people know, the anonymity of the online environment is wonderful for those shy people like myself who have trouble in social situations, but it also gives a lot of license to people to behave badly. The online chat is often chocked full of references to rape, usually of the anal variety, and homophobia. While I understand that a company like Blizzard cannot monitor the discussions from their player base without ultimately having to ban every player and working triple shifts to sort through the complaints, it is disturbing to run into these references embedded in the game.

Another problem I have run into is the use of the word ‘pansy’ in at least one quest text. While most people would not see it as a homophobic term, but it is an old term for an effeminate man and is usually used to attack gay men.

It is, of course, easy to write these off and say ‘but it is only a reference’ or ‘it was only a movie’, but that can be a problem in and of itself. In dismissing the references to a scene in a movie it only serves to reinforce the acceptance of the actions in real life and diminish the horror of what those as presented in the movie. There have been numerous headlines about people blaming the media for violent crime, etc, and that is only partially true. It is when that horror rooted in that movie, that video game, that song is allowed to diminish or the negative feelings related to it are dismissed, then those actions become normalized.

I will, of course, be informing Blizzard of my discomfort with these references in hopes of having them removed. For me, the references bring up my own horrors as a victim of rape since I know quite well what lies behind the specific quote.

As for the gaming community. . .well, I gave up on talking to most of them a long time ago. I usually don’t play with any chat going because of all the horrendous talk about rape and the constant use of homophobic terms.

There are, though, the nice references that I have enjoyed in this game. From the Indiana Jones references and beyond. Those I look forward to, but not to this one.

Ok, since there is no non-disclosure agreement, and news about the game is just about everywhere, I might as well combine my gaming with articles on LGR. I also noticed that my last two posts on this have done well. So, I shall be blogging about my experiences in Cataclysm Beta. I cannot say that these will roll out every day, but I will try to do them once a week. Since right now, Mt. Hyjal and Vashjr are both rather, well, crowded, and everyone is working on Goblins and Worgen, I will concentrate on some of the new experiences with leveling alternates. I’m one of those players who does not really care all that much about end game content anyway. I have never faced Arthas in Icecrown Citadel, nor peered into the maw of Yogg-Saron. I have three level eighties (Paladin, Shaman, Death Knight), and three above seventies (Rogue, Mage, Warlock). I have created and deleted more alts than I can count.

Last night, a new build hit the servers, and, unfortunately, hit them rather hard. For a while, everyone was having to delete their caches and WTF files and Goblins have been totally disabled. In fact, they have been so disabled that they are no longer on the server and have vanished. Hopefully, they will be returning soon.

Thus, I was left with having to decide- how do I handle this blogging about the game that has been my release and relief for so long. Well, I decided I would concentrate on the new experiences of four toons leveling up. While I will be testing Worgen and Goblins, I figure that those experiences are being discussed elsewhere, so I will concentrate on a Night Elf Mage, a Forsaken Hunter, a Dwarf Shaman and a Troll Druid. Now, I cannot stand playing Dwarfs, but I will for the sake of this blog. I hate Gnomes even more, so. . .

I will also chronicle the fun of doing things like learning archaeology from Harrison Jones (along with all the references to the Indiana Jones movies), and provide some insight into the new in-jokes that might be popping up. Do not be surprised if I skip dungeons. I am, alas, one of those players who tends to solo a lot and play with an intensity that borders on ‘meh, I’ll get to lvl 80 eventually’. I will also be providing my thoughts regarding gender and sexuality in game, just so you all know

So. . .let us begin with just waking up from being, well, mostly dead. . .

Blizzard has not rolled out the new cinematics yet, but they have added one nice feature. You are not prompted to actually click ‘yes’ or ‘no’ when you hit ESC to exit out of the opening cinematic.

Now, you are mostly dead, and being hit by a broom. That broom is being wielded by one Lucas Bandroy, and you are now being gotten up from the ultimate slumber. Unfortunately, you’re not allowed to hit him to keep sleeping. This provides your first quest as well. Now that you are up, you are suppose to talk to Mordo, who has been tending the freshly dug up Forsaken for nigh on six years now. He is standing across the Shadow Grave from you. Now, he wants you to do his job and open up some coffins.

The coffins have two Forsaken ready and raring to go, a Scourge, and a frightened woman who runs away. After that, it’s back to the old grind. For the most part, the quests are the same. You have to kill ten Scourge running around Deathknell. The order has been changed a little and you now get the Scavenging Deathknell quest right off the bat, so to speak.

Speaking of Bats. . .Jim is a nice companion, but I hate bats in game. They tend to be bigger than a 747 and have a long cooldown ability. Oh well, I’m stuck with him until level ten. I guess starting with a fluffy Fox is out of the question. . .thought so. . .not Gothic enough, I guess. Speaking of Gothic, Deathknell’s architecture has not changed any. It is still very run down. This changes after you leave Deathknell and you see a lot of Forsaken buildings which are, well, very Forsaken in their architecture.

Now, having scavenged Deathknell for boxes and killed some ghouls and zombies, it is off to the usual run of gather more stuff from killing and, oh yes, kill some more. This time, you kill wolves, bats and skeletons, just like you do in Live. At least the capes look more like capes and not rags. . .though rags always look nice on a Forsaken.

The quests kind of departs at this point. While Samuel Fipps is still there wandering around, you no longer have to worry about killing him and burying him. Perhaps they finally got tired of him getting up and wandering away after you tried to plant him. Problem with planting zombies is that they just grow back like weeds.

So, remember the woman who ran screaming back in the Shadow Grave, you have to go and try to convince her that it is alright that she’s woken up a bit deader than she use to be. You have to bring along a mirror and show her. Now, one problem I have with this is that she seems obsessed with the fact that she’s hideous now. Yes, it seems a tad, um, sexist. This is not the only quest in the game that has to do with a woman hating her appearance, and being dead. Blind Mary in Duskwood in the current game has this basic story going on as well. I won’t harp on it. I am trying to remember if there are quests involving vain men in the game as well. I am pretty sure that there are.

This quest provides something of an insight into the thinking of the Forsaken. They are a hard people who have little time for emotions and do not really care if they cause others suffering. Many of the quests that a Forsaken player goes down involve slaughter, killing and other nastiness, including the creation of a brand new plague to liquify the flesh of the living and dead.

I did run into a major bug with the Night’s Web Hollow mine being blocked off. I could see in, but that was only after I pushed beyond a certain point. Unfortunately, this meant that I had to wait to complete the quest I had. That quest will be familiar to all those who know the game- go and kill spiders. Preferably with a BIG BOOT!

Ok, this is new. I now only have to get seven scarlet armbands and I have been order to cannibalize one of them…mmmm BRAINS. Well, that is up to lvl 5 and out of Deathknell. The big changes come after that, but I will blog about that some other time.

I was both overjoyed and dreading it since I was in the middle of my school’s residency and expecting to have surgery a week after I got the invite. I had also written a rather scathing article for this blog about the problems of heteronormativeness in World of Warcraft. This time, I got to experience it first hand.

I rolled a Goblin and began working my way through the opening quests. To start with, the Goblins are definitely the more cartoonish of the two new races. This is not unexpected. There are several cartoonish gags in the opening, including delivering a present that explodes on the person, and getting to run over other Goblins while racing around in your hotrod. From what I can tell, you do not actually kill the other Goblins, but then again, they constantly survive explosions without dying. I have not tried out the Worgen yet as the zone is badly bugged and I hate playing male characters. Unfortunately, female Worgen are, well, not in game.

That said, back to what brought on the original article. Yes, Chip Endale is the female toon’s boyfriend. Now for the spoilers (do not read any further if you do not want to know!). It turns out that Chip is busy getting it on with Candy Cane. After you get through the opening quest line, and are almost ready to leave the Lost Isles, you are tasked with first killing Chip and then killing Candy. Killing Chip is rather. . .bloody. You have to kill him and rip out his still beating heart. Showing it to him is probably optional, but if you are like me, you do so anyway. Then, it is off to kill Candy. This, of course, creates its own problems of, well, the fact that you are killing two people for betraying you over matters of love, and there are certainly enough people out there who are doing that already.

Blizzard is, unfortunately, like many companies and gearing their games more towards the male market than the female. Still, it is nice that the game has advanced a bit on that front since the game first came out in 2004.

Right now, my Shaman is stuck on the way to Moonglade, my Paladin is stuck in the Emerald Dream, my Rogue is stuck on a bugged quest, as is my Mage.

Ah yes, my Mage. Cataclysm brings in new race/class combos, and unlike a lot of the coverage out there, I have been doing some wonderful questing in the ‘new old’ zones. I rolled a Night Elf Mage and began working on leveling her until I hit a bugged quest (Hey- it’s Beta, a lot of things are broken, I’ve reported it and I’m waiting for the next build). I was pleased to be working through the old, but revamped content in Teladrassil. My Mage worked her way up quickly. The time wasting Moonwell quest line was dropped down to two specific quests, and those centered around quest hubs near those. In Darkshore, there are ground taxis which take players between the quest hubs to make it easier to get back and forth.

The only big problem, of course, was the disconnect between having a level 12 Mage doing level 9 quests.

I love playing Night Elves, which are a female warrior society that worship Elune, the Goddess of the Moon. My biggest issue with them is that they are not very female oriented in their implementation, and certainly not as lesbian centered as much of the lore would suggest. This is a long standing issue that I have had with the Night Elves, though. It would be nice if Blizzard would remedy this, though that may be a long time in coming.

I will continue to write about my experiences, and do so with an eye on obvious gender and sexuality issues.

Oh, yes, and before I get ANY requests, I am not telling you my toon’s names. Those remain out of bounds as I prefer to not be harassed in game.

At the beginning of this month, Blizzard went into the Beta for what is one of the more highly anticipated releases in the MMO community, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Within that expansion will be two new races, the Goblins and the Worgen. Video games are, by and large, written with the expectation that the population of gamers is white, male, and mid-teens to mid-twenties. This is the old stereotype which is, actually, highly incorrect. The average age of the MMO player is mid-thirties. Somewhere between thirty-three and forty-five percent of all gamers are women. Most of us probably grew up playing on Atari consoles.

Ok, so, most games are designed with the interests of young, white males in mind. That means women in skimpy armor and with large breasts, male protagonists, and a lot of other bits about that.

I remember the battle royale that happened on the Blizzard forums over the calls for more female-friendly fair in game. The suggestions included the ability to cover up a bit more of our characters, especially since much of the armor for The Burning Crusade expansion amounted to metal bikinis on women, as well as a few more female racial leaders (something that Blizz ignored again with Cataclysm despite calls to make the new Goblin leader female to go with Sylvanas Windrunner). Another suggestion was skimpier armor for male characters as well.

The thing is, not all of those who were arguing for the skimpier armor on male toons were women, and not all of those who were arguing to keep the skimpy armor on female toons were men. Many male, or at least assumed to be males, expressed a certain love for the idea of having men running around in armor reminiscent of Conan the Barbarian, and some women were appalled at the idea of taking away the metal bikinis because of pixilated sexiness. Not all of these were due to, well, let us face it, wanting to attract toons of the opposite sex.

The thing is, many lesbians and gays play video games, but the assumption has always been that the audience is not lesbian or gay. While companies have tried abysmally to break into the women’s gaming market (note- most women would not buy a pink playstation or Desperate Housewives the Video Game), they have also been abysmal at tailoring games towards the LGBT market which, today, has some pretty impressive buying power. World of Warcraft guilds hold pride parades, and there are several LGBT focused guilds in the game.

Unfortunately, what brought this little piece on is a bit of disappointing news. For the most part, Blizzard has never written in a romantic element to a character’s storyline. Unfortunately, there is going to be some romantic elements in Cataclysm, most specifically in the Goblin start zone. If ‘you’ are playing a female Goblin, then you appear to have a boyfriend at the start of the game, and if ‘you’ are playing a male Goblin, then you appear to have a girlfriend at the start of the game. The quest text seems to indicate a certain amount of romance between the NPC’s and the player’s character. It is disappointing, but not unexpected. Outside of The Sims, it can be very hard to find games which are not rampantly heteronormative.

It would be nice if Blizzard could have made it so that the player could chose which of the two NPC’s (Candy Cane or Chip Endale) the player could take the quest from. After all, the Valentine’s world event is certainly not limited by the gender of the NPC’s, and often involves kissing female or male guards irregardless of the gender of one’s character. Well, Cata is in Beta right now, and it would be nice if Blizzard did a bit of change with regards to this before the expansion goes live sometime later this year.

Of course, it would be nice if they sent me a Beta invite, but I doubt that will happen. After five years in game. . .you’d think they’d invite me lol.

I will still be buying Cataclysm when it hits the shelves.

I would like to thank WoW gamer and podcaster Total Biscuit for bringing this up. While he did not send it to me, he did mention it in game and it got me thinking. Blizzard has something of a problem with heteronormative thinking, and it would be nice if they moved away from that a little more. They aren’t as bad as others, but still. . .

Addendum: Irregardless is irregular English and is not considered a misspelling or a double negative. Please refrain from commenting upon it.

By making fun of them. Holding signs that read “Kill All Humans”, “All Glory To The Hyptnotoad”, and “God Hates Jedis”, various Comic-Con attendees counter protested the protesters from WBC.

Westboro Baptist’s protesters were there to protest everything from LGBT rights to what they perceive as a culture of idolaters.

The wonderful people at Comics Alliance documented the whole thing including pointing out that Wesboro’s people have “faced down humans time and again, but Fred Phelps and his minions from Wesboro Baptist Church were not ready for the cosplay action that awaited them today at Comic-Con. After all, who can win against a counter protest that includes robots, magical anime girls, Trekkies, Jedi and…kittens?”

Apparently, many of the counter protesters chanted “WHAT DO WE WANT?” “GAY SEX!” “WHEN DO WE WANT IT?” “NOW!” Given the number of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transpeople, and even drag queens and kings who will show up at Comic-Con, it should not be surprising. In 1999, at Dragon-Con, a man dressed up really well as Queen Amadala from Star Wars: Phantom Menace.

Seen among the crowd were people dressed in costumes from Star Trek, Futurama, and so many, many more.

There are plenty more pictures that can be found here.

Part of the reason why this was a bad idea came from this years Comic-Con where a man in a Harry Potter shirt decided to test the old adage of the pen being mightier than the sword.

An argument between two men escalated to the point where one man stabbed the other in the face, missing the second man’s eye and slicing open his face near the eye. Comic-Con attendees leapt into action and detained the alleged attacker who could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The victim of the attack was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital at 5:03pm Saturday. The young assailant was booed, geered and had profanities shouted at him by Comic-Con attendees while he was lead away by the police in handcuffs.

The melee started in between the panel for the upcoming Resident Evil: Afterlife staring Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter and the panel for the upcoming Universal Studios films Paul and Cowboys and Aliens. The second panel was delayed for forty-five minutes due to the unusual expression of violence.

Fights are rare at the annual pop culture confab of self-styled freaks and geeks. In fact, Officer David Stafford could not recall any reports of violence at the event for several years. Comic-Con is the nation’s largest comic book and pop-culture gathering with more than 125,000 attending this year.

This year, Westboro Baptist Church decided to protest Comic-Con in their usual attempt to garner some sympathy and attention for their anti-LGBT beliefs. Given that gatherings such as Comic-Con and Atlanta’s Dragon-Con often bring in large segments of the LGBT Community, it is unlikely that they met with a sympathetic audience. The fight did not involve Westboro in any way, shape or form, and it is not even clear if they made it to San Diego to protest the convention.

Typically, conventions like Comic-Con are treated like Sanctuary cities.

03/05/2010- by Natasia Langfelder

In a daring move by Microsoft, Xbox 360 players will now be able to utilize gamertags Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bi and Straight in their profiles. Xbox Live boss, Marc Whitten announced on the official site:

“I’d like to announce an update to the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use and Code of Conduct which will allow our members to more freely express their race, nationality, religion and sexual orientation in Gamertags and profiles. Under our previous policy, some of these expressions of self-identification were not allowed in Gamertags or profiles to prevent the use of these terms as insults or slurs. However we have since heard feedback from our customers that while the spirit of this approach was genuine, it inadvertently excluded a part of our Xbox LIVE community.”

This was a very sensitive subject for Microsoft, who wanted to allow gamers to express their relationship orientation in a way that wouldn’t make anyone (gay or straight) uncomfortable. Microsoft collaborated with GLAAD and with their internal network of LGBT employees to ensure that the new system would be acceptable for all parties.

Another Xbox Live policy boss, Stephen Toulouse, announced the change via his twitter account:

“Expression of relationship orientation ok in Gamertags and Profiles on Xbox LIVE. Special thanks to GLAAD and Microsoft’s LGBT community for guidance on the terms.”

There have been some gamers that have expressed discontent with this change, stating that they just want to game and not know about sexual orientation or that gay is often used as an insult online and that’s the only place for this word in gaming. This is blatantly untrue. While it is true that some gamers only form superficial ties to the online gaming community, for many players, the game is an extention of their social circle. Despite the negative commenters, this is an exciting day for LGBT gamers who are looking to connect with other members of their community online.

In an unprecedented move, the game is drawing attention and opening up the conversation between children and their parents, although not always welcome. The game allows you to choose a male or female identity, and then invites you to choose a spouse, regardless of the spouse’s gender.

The response has been neutral so far with a few comments made on the website where the game can be downloaded such as these:

With a thumbs up leaf013 Mar 14, 2009 – “I love that its all inclusive of all people. Same-sex marriage being included just gives another opportunity to teach kids and adults alike the value of people, their freedoms, pursuit of happiness and at the very least – tolerance.”

With a thumbs down newsblogger Mar 13, 2009 – “This game potentially contains adult issues dealing with same-gender marriage. Be prepared for comments and questions dealing with that if you have kids playing this game.”

Anyone who has seen certain comments on our own site know that websites and MMO’s are subject to the use agreement of the particular institution that runs the site. That is, speech of a specific nature can be censored at any time, any where, and in accordance only with the policies, written and unwritten, of the administrators.

The problem is, are the words gay, lesbian, and transsexual bad words? According to some companies, they are.

The mega-MMO, World of Warcraft, run by Blizzard, had this as a major issue for many years after its launch. While the word “gay” was not banned, words like “lesbian” and “transsexual” were. Either with the release of version 3.0.2 or prior to it, those words were removed from the censor list.

Sony, however, struggles with this issue while building their own virtual world called Home.

Sony’s Home is suppose to be a virtual world for gamers. In many ways, it mirrors environments like Second Life and is more a virtual social world rather than a gaming environment where players slay pixilated monsters for quests, gold, and treasure. Playstation Home users start out with their own virtual apartment which they can purchase modifications for, as well as purchase other spaces for friends and family to virtually visit.

Home has been plagued by problems since it entered Beta. Not only have players faced issues with language such as terms associated with the LGBTI community, but words such as “Jesus” and “Jew” have been filtered by their program. This has created a major problem when it comes to attempts to create virtual groups. The censorship software was so strict that it even filtered out the word “hello”.

Censorship issues aside, one of the biggest issues has been the harassment of online players who have reported racist and sexist language from some users, and undoubtedly homophobic language as well. Sony states that there is a zero tolerance policy on this issue, and to report any harassment to moderators. Unfortunately, as the community grows larger, that policy may be harder to enforce, as Blizzard Entertainment discovered as their virtual world went from a million subscribers to over eleven million in four years.

Playstation Home has been plagued by problems and has been slow in reaching beyond its Beta, or secondary testing, stage.

The treatment of the LGBTI community by gaming organizations is something that has been lamentable. The bloggers at Lesbian Gamers have noted that there are many gaming companies which have deep homophobic tendencies. Policies concerning the LGBTI community have changed in the last four years for several gaming companies. In 2006, Blizzard had to change its policies regarding the creation and advertising of LGBTI friendly in-game groups called guilds to reflect a more open policy towards the Community after Shimmre, played by Sara Andrews was threatened with being banned from the game by a Game Moderator for advertizing her guild Oz. Unfortunately, Shimmre appears to have gone inactive, and the guild Oz on her server (though there are other guilds with that name).

It should be noted that, since I began playing World of Warcraft myself in 2003, I have been in close to a dozen guilds, of which only two still exist, if you count the one I am currently in. Guilds and players come and go constantly.
