Lesbians everywhere hated the theme song to the original L Word, but when spinoff The Real L Word premiered, the theme song was cute, fun, pop candy. Leaving lesbians everywhere saying, “Wait…who sings that?”

The group behind the song is Love Darling. They are an indie rock trio out of Hollywood, fronted by queer hottie Shay Magro. Also there are two other guys in the band, if you are into that, Mike Wolpe handles the bass, guitar & keys and Christian Jovanny Trujillo is on drums & percussion. The group is on their second album, the first was Pawnshop Radio ON and their newest is Sunshine Dust.

Let me tell you, Sunshine Dustis hot. In a summer full of disappointing music, Love Darling is giving the music world a piping hot injection of awesome. The band has said that their influence includes Smashing Pumpkins and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and that is evident in their music. They are hard enough to be rock and soft enough to appeal to the mainstream. Sunshine Dust delivers music that is repetitive enough to be catchy without the mindless repetition that plagues most of today’s music. The band’s lyrics are original and relatable without becoming mushy or pretentious. Shay Magro has a sultry voice with an edge. She sounds a little like Kiyomi from Hunter Valentine, but smoother and softer. If you love Hunter Valentine, you can’t miss Love Darling.

The first single is This Time, it’s a solid offering from the album and represents the band’s trademark style. A lot of the time, a band will suck you in with one song and then once you hear the rest of the album, it’s a big let down. However, those who purchase the entire album won’t be disappointed, This Time is not the best song Sunshine Dust has to offer. Other strong titles are Cadence, Close to Me, On the Line and my personal favorite, Forget This Part.

LikeZEBRA has announced a contest for those who are a fan of Margaret Cho.  The contest began on 23 August, and the prise is a signed copy of Cho’s new album given to a member of the likeZEBRA.com website.  The site specializes in unsigned and independent artists.  Her new comedy album, Cho Dependent, hit record stores on 24 August, and features musicians such as Andrew Bird, Tegan and Sara, and Fiona Apple.

In 1997, L.A. Triumph and another clothing company launched their line called “Material Girl” aimed at young women.  This month, Madonna and her daughter Lourdes launched their own line called the same thing.  Now, L.A. Triumph is suing to stop Madonna from using that name to sell clothing.  In all likelihood, L.A. Triumph will succeed in their suit, which asks for Madonna to stop selling her line and to hand over any profits made on it.  It is unlikely that there will be a counter suit based upon the name “Material Girl” despite the fact that it is the name of a Madonna song.  While the song was sung by and made famous by Madonna, it was written by Peter Brown and Roberta Rans, who likely own the copyright.

According to L.A. Triumph , the suit “is necessary to protect L.A. Triumph’s valuable intellectual property rights before its brand is irreparably subsumed by Madonna’s new Material Girl line.”

The group is most famous for their song “Barracuda”, which is about the evils of the record industry. Still, the band has blazed the way for many female fronted bands and female artists over the years, and even influenced groups such as Alice In Chains.

For those who grew up on the rock fueled ballads of the 1980’s, the direction that Heart has been going on as they come through their fourth decade of recording is probably not as familiar. They have returned to the style closer to that which they began with back in the album Dreamboat Annie. That style is drawn heavily from the work of Led Zeppelin, whose songs they often perform, and sometimes perform better than the originals.

The ten song album will be out on 31 August not long before Heart wraps up their 2010 tour.

David Bowie has put the kibosh on the queerest, most genderbending union ever. Recently, rumors flew that Lady Gaga and Bowie would be dueting on her newest album, the one that she is sure will be better than any of her previous work. For some reason, Bowie or his reps do not want to lend credence to these rumors and are attempting to separate Bowie from Gaga.

Bowie’s website reads: “[I]n a nutshell, the suggestion that David Bowie is producing and participating in the production of Lady Gaga’s next album is untrue and a hoax.”

Dude…working with Gaga would have been better for your career, not worse. Maybe Bowie just has no intention of working again? If I was Bowie, I would be begging to work with Gaga. Show me anyone under 25 who has even heard one of his songs…

Lady Gaga has been pushing her newest album hard, calling it the ‘greatest work’ she has ever done. She went on to say:

The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life. … I’m on the quest to create the anthem for my generation for the next decade, so that’s what I’ve done.”

Gaga has a stellar line-up for the album. It has leaked online that she is performing a duet with David Bowie. She is also said to be working with all-star producers, such as Darkchild, Teddy Riley, Fernando Garibay, Rodney Jerkins and RedOne. Gaga has worked with RedOne extensively, so she will be able to keep her signature sound, while switching it up by working with other hit-makers.

Comedian Margaret Cho is going into the music industry. The multi-talented Cho is planning to release an album and has made a music video for her single, “I’m Sorry.” The song is a comedic tale of a woman so obessed with a boyfriend she kills him. Cho wrote on her blog that the song is about an ex-boyfriend who she had feelings for even after their break-up. She googled him one day and found out that he had murdered his wife and hid her body in their attic. I have no idea if Cho is kidding or not, but it sounds serious.

 He was like the Martin Landau of my dreams. Or like the John Travolta of my dreams. He was featured a ton in his heyday, and then continued to have much success later in life, maybe even more so, because irony was involved. Anyway, this man I loved, I realized I still loved, and I had no idea how he was doing. Where he was. What his life was. I wanted to know. I had resisted googling him for years because my feelings for him hadn’t yet faded. I didn’t want to know he was successful and happy and living in a renovated lighthouse with his beautiful wife and many children. I typed his name into the little box, fully expecting to be made instantly, painfully jealous of the charmed life I would never share with him. Instead, his Wikipedia entry came up. His name, a list of his credits and then this, “in 2007, was convicted of the murder of his wife.” Apparently, my dream lover had bludgeoned his wife to death, then stuffed her body in the attic of their house, where she lay for nearly a month, until her body had partially mummified.

So, I had a song. And a murder ballad at that. I wrote the lyrics when I was up late at night, unable to sleep, thinking about that poor woman’s body, dead between the walls like a character in an Edgar Allen Poe story. She was me. She wasn’t me. She could have been me. She couldn’t have been me. He had lost his considerable looks in his mugshot, his face bloated with alcohol and domestic violence. No one is flattered in that orange. He was no longer a dream lover but a nightmare monster. He moved from a place in my heart to hiding under the bed, lurking in the shadows, waiting for me in the closet, so when I pushed the door closed, he would push back. [Source]

Rent may have closed on Broadway but Neil Patrick Harris is revitalizing Rent in California, staging the popular LGBT themed play at the Hollywood Bowl. Harris has starred on the stage before, and has also directed a one-man show as well as an episode of his hit show, “How I Met Your Mother.” Harris says of directing  Rent:

“It’s a show that I listened to consistently for a solid year before I auditioned for it,” said Harris during a recent break in rehearsals. “Playing Mark, who narrates and observes the show, I watched people’s interpretations of the scenes at every performance. So I have an educated take on what it could be.”

Harris has had to hit the ground running with his cast and crew due to the compressed rehearsal time — about two weeks — that is typical for Bowl productions. He said the staging will pay homage to director Michael Greif’s original New York production, but “I don’t want it to feel like a stop on the national tour.”

The cast includes a mix of “Rent” veterans and screen celebrities looking to spread their acting wings. “I wanted to pair each newbie with someone with experience in the show,” said Harris. “It helps me time-wise — it’s all about time constraints here.”

The cast is extremely ecletic, with teen superstar Vanessa Hudgens playing the drug addled stripper, Mimi and Nicole Scherzinger playing bisexual babe magnet Maureen. Also, Wayne Brady will be around. I’m sure no one remembers who he is.

Harris is also planning on expanding the cast of the show from 15 to 25, as the venue is too large for so small a cast.

Exciting times. It’s great to see Rent back up at a big venue. The movie version of the play that came out a few years ago was labeled “dated” for it’s 90’s subject matter and bohemian focus. However, if anyone can bring back interest in the play, it’s the extremely popular Harris.

Lady Gaga has set a record for most MTV Video Music Award Nominations, with 13. Gaga tells People that she is glad that it is an unlucky number. It’s ironic that even the number of Gaga’s VMA noms is controversial. Gaga also throws a shout out to her LGBT fans.

Gaga says to People:

“I’m so honored for all the little monsters and self-professed freaks of the universe, to have more VMA nominations in a single year than any artist in MTV history,” says Gaga. “Ironically, I’m even more proud it’s an unlucky number: 13. A long time ago the world told me and my little monsters we would never be heard, together we changed the rules. God put me on Earth for three reasons: To make loud music, gay videos and cause a damn raucous. Thank you, MTV!”

The National Inquierer isn’t right often, but everyonce in awhile they get it right. Like, John Edwards did have a “lovechild” and there really is a “Fishboy” a boy that was born a fish from the waist up. Now, they are onto songstress Tracy Chapman and her current girlfriend like Fishboy on kelp. The rag is reporting that although Chapman met celesbian Guinevere Turner only a few months ago, the two are planning to move in together. This phenomea is known as “u-hauling” among lesbians. However, when straight people do it, it’s called being “knocked up.”

The National Inquirer didn’t provide any details of how Chapman asked Turner to move in with her, but I imagine that their conversation went something like this:

Tracy: Baby, can I hold you tonight?

PenGuin (that’s Tracy’s pet name for her): Actually I have to get back to my place, I need to do laundry, feed the dogs, the cats, you know how it is.

Tracy: At this point in my life, I’ve done so many things wrong I don’t know if I can do right. If you put your trust in me I hope I won’t let you down, if you give me a chance I’ll try.

PenGuin: Honey, what are you trying to say? You know I hate it when you only speak in lyrics.

Tracy: I’m talking bout a revolution…in a fast car…wanna shack up?

PenGuin: Yes! Yes a hundred times yes! Maybe now that I am dating a serious singer/songwriter people will forget that horrible scene in The L Word where I had loud crazy sex with Poppi and then we took a break for liverwurst sandwiches for some reason and then make vagina looking like liverwurst jokes!

That’s probably how the conversation went.

You might remember Turner as Gabby in The L Word or as whatshername from Go Fish. Turner is currently starring in Cheryl Dunye’s “The Owls” about mature lesbians who do something very, very stupid. Check out my interview with Dunye below and expect for Turner to address the Chapman situation in her press rounds for “The Owls.”

Also, Turner postponed her interview with Cherrygrrl because she was moving. Coincidence? I hope not. I hope Chapman and Turner turn their relationship into a lesbian interracial lovestory and I hope that Disney makes it into an animated movie.

In an interview with Vanity Fair Lady Gaga admitted that she still uses cocaine occassionally. The bisexual superstar says that she uses coke a “couple of times a year” but emphasizes that this is a case of ‘do as I say, not as I do.’ Gaga lets her fans know she does not want them to use drugs, saying: “I do not want my fans to ever emulate that or be that way.” 

Gaga has said that she has had problems with drugs in the past, before she was famous. ast year, she told The Observer that she did “bags and bags of cocaine” as a struggling artist in New York, but quit after being confronted by her father.  “I was able to stop, because I was panicking more on the drugs than I was sober,” she said last year. “So I’m fine now.”

However, it is hard to separate Stefani Germanotta from her alter ego, the carefully constructed Lady Gaga. Is this proof of Stefani’s occasional drug use? Or is this Lady Gaga keeping her image intact? Lady Gaga has made statements like “pop stars should not eat” and she will only appear in public wearing her outrageous, attention grabbing outfits. So is this real or illusion? Is this a pop star acting like a pop star or is it real? It’s impossible to tell with Gaga. She knows that and it’s part of why she is arguably most powerful pop star on the planet right now.

Lady Gaga also tells Vanity Fair that she is loney and celibate, claims she has made before. However, she has recently been seen on dates with her ex-boyfriend Luc Carl, as well as making out with a mystery woman on a boat a few months ago. Gaga also says:

“I’m drawn to bad romances. And my song [Bad Romance] is about whether I go after those [sorts of relationships] or if they find me.

“I have this weird thing that if I sleep with someone they’re going to take my creativity from me through my vagina.”

Which might be a reference to an ex-boyfriend who is suing Gaga, saying he helped construct her persona and make her famous and then she gave him the shaft.

In news that will further crush Alicia Keys queer fanbase, the singer married babydaddy Swizz Beatz yesterday. After news got out in February that Keys was preggers, Swizz Beatz finalized his divorce from his wife and asked Keys to marry him. The two had a ceremony under a sacred tree or something to bless the baby a few weeks ago. And recently tied the knot in Corsica. Media outlets are reporting that Bono and Queen Latifah were also in attendance.

Mediatakeout is the only newsoutlet that had the correct date of the wedding. They are also reporting that Beatz’s son served as the best man.

Some Keys fans have turned on the singer, labeling her a ‘homewrecker.’

Oh well. Congrats to the happy couple! Hopefully they can make it last.

According to reviews of her Monster Ball show:

“True to her highly creative take on pop music, which is influenced by the likes of Madonna, ABBA, Elton John and Queen, Gaga packed her hits into segments featuring Broadway-inspired scenery – the tale of a woman trying to get to the Monster Ball in New York City.

Gaga, 24, rivaled her predecessor Cher with several costume changes.

Her looks included skimpy dance outfits showing off her legs, a flowing red robe, a nun’s headpiece paired with a translucent skirt, a white gown with wings and her famed outfit spraying sparks from her breast and crotch areas. Several types of edgy headgear at times covered the star’s yellow-blond hair.”

The singer spoke out against Arizona’s SB 1070 immigration law about halfway through her set, and called for her fans to protest the law. Governor Jan Brewer has begun considering ways to change the law before it drags Arizona downward fast, and pulls it through the courts in a challenge that it will likely not win. Unfortunately for her, the Republicans in the Arizona legislature are refusing to consider any changes that do not make the law stronger and more repressive. Lady Gaga apparently said that the law had created “a state of emergency” in Arizona. She stated “We have to be active. We have to actively protest…I will not cancel my show. I will hold you, and we will hold each other, and we will protest this state.”

Apparently her statements, described as rants by one reviewer, were widely applauded by her fans.

Her decision to hold the concert but call for the protest of the immigration law may not sit well with all of her fans; however, it is certainly a novel idea. Lady Gaga is well known for supporting LGBT rights, and recently, she was the subject of one of Westboro Baptist Church’s protests. She is joined by Justin Bieber and the whole of Comic-Con as WBC looks for relevance in the world.

((In the interest of full disclosure, I am not a fan of Lady Gaga’s music. I chose to strictly report on her activism because, honestly, her music clashes too much for my liking and I do not feel capable of commenting about her shows.))

Oh his official website, McElderry, known as Georgie Joe, stated:

“I have always been a very honest person and so it is important for me to continue to be honest. It has been the most amazing year so far and I feel so privileged. It’s also been a time of real self realisation and I feel as if I have grown up so much in these few months. There has been speculation about my sexuality in the past and I have always been honest at the time I have been asked. Over the past few weeks I have really had time to reflect and to realise who I am.

“I spoke to my friends and family about this in the last few days and it was important to do the same for you all as you have been so supportive. I have had nothing but support from you and many of you have been very open in saying that you will continue to support me whatever my sexuality. It is important to me to let you know first, so that you know the stories in the papers are true. I made the choice to speak openly about this. Everything is going well and I?m really happy to be able to move forward from here.”

At first he was angry at the Twitter hackers, but then he though about their message and thought to himself “Well, they’re not that far from the truth.” He has said “ I think the Twitter thing was the point when I realised I was gay. I’m feeling good about it, it’s liberating. Now I can just get on with my life.” He only just disclosed his sexuality to his mother after visiting her in Newcastle. He had a girlfriend for three years while at school.

Indeed, apparently, he had not really thought about himself as being gay until this incident happened, of course he won with a cover of Milly Cyrus’s “The Climb”. He has told reporters “I thought ‘Actually, my feelings have changed – this is how I feel now.’ The penny has dropped.” He did, apparently, kiss a boy before he went on the X Factor.

X Factor boss Simon Cowell, famous to American audiences as the acerbic and mean tempered judge on American Idol, phoned and offered his support to McElderry after the news broke.

Ever since Simon Cowell announced that he was dunzo with American Idol, the media have been speculating who would fill his mean-spirited, honest-to-the-point-of-nastiness, British judging shoes. Top contenders have been Elton John, Brett Michaels, Perez Hilton (according to him), Jessica Simpson and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. Also, now that Simon is gone, Nigel Lythgoe has returned as a producer of the show and might serve as a judge himself. He has garnered on-air judging experience on the show, “So You Think You Can Dance” and would probably be able to serve as a blonde version of Simon without the dwindling fanbase missing a beat.

Now, Fox has another spot to fill. Ellen has announced that she is leaving the show, as it is not a good fit for her. She says that she didn’t enjoy being “mean” to the contestants. Basically, she didn’t want to admit that most of the people who want to be singers, can’t make it in the highly competitive arena of professional singing. It’s not a slam on the American Idol hopefuls, it’s just a fact. If it was easy to make a living singing, we would all be doing it. Ellen said in a Fox press release:

“A couple months ago, I let FOX and the AMERICAN IDOL producers know that this didn’t feel like the right fit for me,” said DeGeneres. “I told them I wouldn’t leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next.  It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for.   I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings. I loved the experience working on IDOL and I am very grateful for the year I had.  I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be.”

Anyway, Hollywood Deadlineis reporting that Ellen officially left the show only after her seat on the judging panel was given away to Jennifer Lopez. It has been speculated that the erstwhile JLo wanted the seat to save her stagnant career, but American Idol probably needs JLo to boost their stagnant ratings. Despite JLo’s unpopular marriage to fellow Puerto Rican crooner, Mark Anthony and her canned pop-songs, she still has a strong following, especially in the Latino community.

 There are also rumors that Idol judge Kara Dioguardi has been unofficially fired. The successful songwriter never quite achieved popularity as a judge on American Idol, despite her record of sure fire pop hits. Dioguardi was on a year-to-year contract that has not yet been renewed.

Is the Nicki Minaj and Trey Songz hit, ‘Bottoms Up’ filled with gay subtext? Does it mean that Trey Songz is gay? Mediatakeout.com seems to think so. The urban media outlet has long been reporting that they have heard rumors that the popular R&B singer is keeping it on the down low. The theory is that the title of the song, ‘Bottoms Up’ is refering to the more sexually passive partner or the one that is penetrated in gay lovemaking. Bottom used to just refer to man-on-man love, but it has now entered queer venacular and is widely used among men and women. In the context of the song, ’Bottoms Up’ is clearly a double entendre, refering to both drinking bottles of alcohol at clubs as a status symbol as well as to sex.

Bimbo, the gay specialist at Mediatakeout.com says that they could have named the song anything, but bottoms up is too apparent. He’s kind of right, there are ways to say the same thing without using queer venacular, in ‘How Low’ Ludacris raps, “face down, ass up” to get his point across. He says that the song might be Trey Songz saying he’s a top. I don’t know Trey Songz, so I don’t know if he’s gay straight or bi. But the song does seem like a bisexual anthem, even featuring out and proud bisexual Nicki Minaj.

The rest of Trey’s chorus says:

Bottoms up bottoms up
pocket full of cream

Which again refers to money, but can also refer to uh, other things of a more sexual nature. Again, all of the sexual references used by Trey are unisex. While he does say, ‘girl’ a lot in the song, this doesn’t cancel out the ambigous bisexual references.

Nikki Minaj lends her light touch to the song by screaming about rims, as in margaritas of course.

Bisexual rapper Nicki Minaj latest hit, “Your Love” sounds like a heterosexual love song, with lyrics like:

The song comes with a heterosexual video to back it up. Nicki is in love with a karate teacher, who teaches to an all woman class, who look upon him adoringly. Later, one of the women ‘kills’ Nicki over him and he mourns to the sky over his lost love. Aw.

Nicki is rumored to have a boyfriend, Jamal Willis. Buuuuuut, sources say that she isn’t singing to a man. They say whenever Nicki performs the song she is actually singing to P Diddy piece, Cassie. Rumors have been flying that Nicki has been hooking up with Diddy’s girl, Cassie ever since the three spent time together on a set recording a video. Mediatakeout.com has posted pictures of the two women holding hands, going to clubs together and chilling all night. Alright, I admit it, I might be a Nicki Minaj convert.

Nicki has also been linked to Amber Rose, Kanye West’s on and off girlfriend, who also identifies as bisexual.

American Idol has a lesbian judge, Ellen DeGeneres, on the panel, but that doesn’t leave them immune to criticism over gay discrimination. The show has often featured gay and gender queer individuals in their audition process and often paints them as freaks of nature. Show the judges a man that isn’t a lumberjack and Simon Cowell is disgusted, Randy Jackson says “yo dawg” like a broken record and Paula pops some more pills. To be fair, the audition process doesn’t just hold up gays for ridicule, the show also targets fat women, non-conventionally attractive women and ‘nerdy’ men. It’s entertaining as long as you don’t think about it too hard and dissect what it means about yourself and the American public at large. The show has also been criticsized for the banter between host Ryan Seacrest and judge Simon Cowell, where they each insinuate that the other one is gay and that they hate each other.

Now the show is being sued by a gay person they held up to ridicule. The Advocate is reporting that Idol reject Ian Bernardo is suing the show for 300 million dollars in reparation for the mental distress he endured. Bernardo claims Idol “exploited my non-conforming appearance and sexual orientation. They did this by directing me to ‘gay it up’ in any appearance I made on camera.”

I believe Bernardo, however, he was also paid for his appearances on the show. So he was willfully participating in his own exploitation and that of his community. Basically, Ian was already compensated to make a jackass of himself and contribute to gay stereotypes. He doesn’t deserve extra money, certainly not to the tune of 300 million. Bernardo’s suit will most likely be thrown out, as no judge would take the claim seriously after seeing the price tag attached to it. Bernardo would have been better served to ask for less money. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Ourscene tv wants to provide you with the answer to ‘are they or aren’t they’? They being the most talked about almost lesbian couple, Lori Michaels and Danielle Staub. For those of you who aren’t aware of who these two women are, you obviously don’t read Lez Get Real enough.

Lori Michaels, aka the Dyke Diva is a dance music queen. Danielle Staub is the most hated woman on the Real Housewives of New Jersey and had a table flipped on her. The two women recorded a song together, Real Close. Which Staub has described as a tortured lullaby between two women who are experiencing feelings for one another. Staub and Michaels have hinted that they are dating. They have been seen out at charity events together, with Staub’s two gorgeous children in tow. Michaels and the Staub girls also write on each other’s Facebook pages on the regular. Staub signs CD’s “Danielle and Lori Michaels” and has tweeted the Michaels is her “girlfriend.” When VP of Programming and late night talk show host, Andy Cohen, asked Staub if the two women were dating, she declined to comment saying coyly, “I think I will let you all guess on that one for a little while longer.”

Oh Danielle, no one believes you are really sleeping with another woman. The song is surprisingly good and lesbians will like it and you whether or not you are intimate with the details of Lori Michaels’ vadge. Ourscene tv decided to get the answers from Lori Michaels. Basically, she confirms that they are not dating…but she doesn’t want to piss off Danielle! So she takes it back! But she doesn’t take it back all the way! Watch below:

Staub is the third housewife, after Kim Zolciak of Atlanta and Countess Luann Delesseps of NYC to try to crossover into the music industry. Staub is the second, after Zolciak, to have a lesbian affair in order to promote her single.

Glee creator and newly minted mega-millionaire Ryan Murphy announced at Comic-con that Glee will have a Rocky Horror Picture Show themed episode. Chris Colfer added, “I want to do ‘The Time Warp.’” 

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a trans themed musical and a hit among the LGBT and straight set alike. Further queer Glee news includes an update on lesbian cheerleaders, Santana and Brittany. Murphy says there will be a passionate kiss between the two girls and actress Naya Rivera wants fans to know that the correct name for the couple is “Santittnay.” Sounds good to me. I’ve never seen an episode but I might tune in now, because Naya Rivera sounds awesome.

To make things even gayer, Murphy was excited over a fan suggestion of a “Guys and Dolls” themed episode. Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel will also be returing to the show.

British Pop sensation and breast cancer survivor Kylie Minogue will host the 100 episode of Logo’s music series, “NewNowNext PopLab.” NewNowNext PopLab plays pop music videos of LGBT and LGBT friendly artists.  Past artists who have hosted the show include Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyonce, Adam Lambert, Jennifer Hudson, Kelis, Nicole Scherzinger of “The Pussycast Dolls,” Lily Allen, MIKA and Keri Hilson.

Kylie Minogue has a reputation for being an avid supporter of LGBT rights and has a large gay following both in Britan and America. One of her biggest fans is gossip blogger Perez Hilton, who has helped make her a household name in America.

Kylie’s episode will air on Logo on August 3rd. Set your DVR!

“Tango has to adapt, just like a language, and gay tango is enriching the language of tango,” Gustavo Aciar told Reuters. The forty-five year old opera pianist from Buenos Aires danced with his partner to the mournful music of the tango, halfway through the dance, he took the lead from his partner who had been leading up until that point.

At the weekend workshop, there were none of the normal women in high heels and men in suits normally associated with the dance. Kalervo Barker from Wales, UK, stated “gay tango takes tango to another level– the macho leader can become the sensual leader. Tango is so sensual and for me dancing with a man is more sensual when leading or following, there is a little flirting and I don’t want to flirt with a woman.” The majority of the participants in the weekend festival were men.

Later, the students went to the Academia Bien Porteno milonga, or tango dance hall.

Thirty-eight year old Argentine economics researcher Laura discussed the fact that it is difficult for gay couples to visit mainstream milongas despite the liberal attitudes of Buenos Aires. She stated while taking a breather on the dancefloor “I would prefer for integration to be a reality, but it’s difficult for people from the community to enter more traditional milongas, so this festival is important.”

Tourism, especially among lesbian and gay travelers, has been up in Argentina of late. The weekend mini-festival sought to take advantage of the influx of European tourists on summer vacation. The boom in tourism has brought about a rekindled interest in the tango which has been part of the culture of Argentina since it was first created in the immigrant neighborhoods of Buenos Aires.

Traditionally, the man leads and the woman follows, but it was not uncommon for the male dancers, or tangueros, to practice their dancing with each other. Festival organizer Augusto Balizano stated “What the books don’t say is that while some men did it for the practice, others did it because they loved it, and why shouldn’t I dance tango with the object of my desire?”

Tango is not the only place where gays are making a splash in the dancing world. Steve Valentine and Robert Tristan are working on their own dance routines for the ballroom dancing competition in the 2010 Gay Games which will be held in Cologne, Germany beginning on 31 July. Like most dance pairs, the two are not a couple.

Same-sex dancing has its own issues, including things like who will lead and who will follow. Traditionally, those were decided upon long before someone took up ballroom dancing. It is not uncommon for same-sex dance partners to switch off in mid dance. Both men agree that it can be a bit daunting to watch dancing between same-sex couples. Tristan stated “The first 10 minutes is strange, but after that, you just watch the dancing,” There is, of course, always sexual tension in a dance, even in dance couples who are not dating or married. Valentine stated “On the dance floor, it’s like making love. We work with each other’s bodies continuously.”

The two are hoping to win big at the Gay Games. According to the LA Times, the couple has won the “Northern California’s April Follies and La Fiesta de Montréal, the Canadian national same-sex ballroom championship, in May”

Lady Gaga issued a statement regarding these protestors to her loyal fans. “At the risk of drawing attention to a hateful organization, I would like to make my… fans aware of a protest being held outside the [concert] in St. Louis tonight. . . My request to [fans] and public authorites[sic] is to pay these hate criminals no mind. Do not interact with them, or try to fight. … Do not respond to any of their provocation. Don’t waste your words, or feelings, no matter what you hear or see you are more fortunate and blessed than they are, and in your heart just pray for them,” she said via Facebook.

Fred Phelps’ church stated via its website “We … warn this little false prophetess and all of her over-indulged sycophants that they are each one, individually heading straight to hell in a gender-confused, self-loathing, tone-deaf hand basket.”

Lady Gaga’s fans have started trending ‘#GodLovesGaga’ on Twitter.

The protest probably began because of Lady Gaga’s pro-LGBT stances. Then again, Phelps and company never have really had to have an excuse to go out there and picket anyone.

In the end it was four protesters. One shy person was behind a lamp post.

Perez Hilton is reporting that in an interview with Rolling Stone, Melissa Etheridge says she is grateful to Taylor Swift, for her teen-positive music.

“Taylor Swift is one of the artists that my daughter hung on to. She’s real, and shes singing about real experiences of teenagers, and for that I’m greatful.”

Yes, I am aware that ‘greatful’ is misspelled. In the words of Bart Simpson, “I didn’t do it.” Also Perez ends the post with this:

Nooooooooooo Kelly Clarkson has pulled out of Lilith Fair! The reason: she is working on her new album and therefore can’t participate. Nooooo. Lilith Fair has already had a lot of trouble with ticket sales. Norah Jones, a big draw for the festival, pulled out of a few of her own tour dates. There has been a lot of criticism of the festival because of both high ticket prices (legitimate) and because Americans don’t need an all female music concert (less legitimate).

Sarah McLachlan has addressed the poor ticket prices, saying “There’s about 300 seats out of 16,000 or whatever that are $250,” she says. “Then there’s 9,000 that are 25 dollars, so come on. We’re working our hardest to have reasonably priced tickets so it can be accessible for everyone and that people will want to come.”

Lilith Fair has already canceled 10 concerts in the series due to poor ticket sales and canceled the Arizona concert due to the racist immigration laws. Despite the cancelation of Ms. Clarkson,  Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, The Go-Gos and many more A-List ladies will be participating.

St. John Fernando & Greg at SF Pride 2010

Fans ecstatic as Radio Personalities attend SF Pride;

Little did famed radio personalities, St. John, and team Greg and Fernando know that  being outlawed from the 2010 Pride festivities, by complicit Clear Channel and Pride San Francisco (2010) would in fact turn out a ‘blessing in disguise.”

St John has been  a San Francisco Pride feature  celebrity  DJ each Pride for the past fourteen years,  Greg and Fernando have been bashing on doors trying to get a spot, year after year and to no  avail.   It seemed their unwelcome fate was sealed when they quit the airwaves of Pride sponsor  Clear Channel.

Joining CBS, the two sets of scorching talent  brought their magnetic pull to CBS, their new home, willing to shake fist in the face of  what may well have been the homophobic culture generated by Clear Channel home to the likes of mega –right wing stars Limbaugh and Beck.

St John, as host and creator of San Francisco’s longest running global dance radio show HouseNation  and  on air personality  for CBS Radio’s MOViN99.7… nominated at WMC for mix show of the year, has performed at SF Pride for the past fourteen years.  From the airwaves to the dance floors of the hottest clubs and undergrounds, St. John’s energetic style has made him a staple internationally from Brazil to Canada, and nation-wide from New York’s Limelight to San Francisco’s Ruby Skye. With multiple CD releases on major labels such as Thrive and UBL Recordings, St. John has sold over a quarter-million albums and in 2010 , contributed to HIV/AIDS funding and cast Pride on a community of teens confused by coming out.

In complimentary contrast, and with standing fan base as profound, is beloved duo, team “ Greg and Fernando” who shake the morning commuters with humor and rancor, so unique in its gay-straight blend that their own ‘bridge’ belies that of the reach of the very Golden Gate most commuters cross each of those blaring CBS mornings. Be assured that despite the hefty $6.00 toll (or is it $7 yet?) these fans are adding laughter and fun to the beauty of that extraordinary Bay Area commute.

In the week leading to 2010 San Francisco Pride, Lez Get Real published an article, exposing, exclusively, the impending ban excluding the iconic hosts from performing at the SF Gay Pride Festival.

Despite the article’s virility and the hullabaloo it caused, Pride did not change its stance and nor did it answer our specific e-mail questions calling for an explanation.

After the Pride Festivities, we spoke to St. John as well as Fernando, on behalf of illustrious duo Greg and Fernando.  Clearly the sentiment was unified – annual San Francisco LGBT festival and parade crossed the implicit boundary from Pride to corporate control, delivered through exclusionary terms and conditions in sponsorship contracts, that not only excluded these superb talents but the very saints of “gay is okay!”, and hence served to tacitly disparage them in the eyes of fans and populace alike.

When Lezgetreal.com broke the story in its exclusive article, St. John’s fans were shocked.  The internet and St. John’s Facebook site, spiraled into the world of viral and the comments came pouring in, via email, bloggers, and the usual fan channels.

Feeling the pulse and camaraderie, nothing could keep the famed verbally flamboyant duo, Greg and Fernando, nor the LGR featured and talented magic-mix-machine St. John, away from Pride San Francisco and so of course they showed up; after all they are family.  They  were about to find out, however, that they were there not for themselves but for Pride after all, because the FANS did not let them forget that! They were there- for the fans, who recognized and all but swarmed both sets of talent.

Sparked by the previous article, they were incensed and happy to see the guys!

St. John told us that together with Greg and Fernando, and keen CBS interns, the band of  buddies attended San Francisco Pride, as any ordinary members of the population would have the right to do. “We made our rainbow signs and went to Pride,” quipped St. John.

“Truthfully,” says St. John, “I had the best time in memory of any of the San Francisco Pride events that I have attended, always as performer.  In all my fourteen years attending I have been on a stage performing, but this time I was amongst my fans and able to connect on a personal basis.  It was an extraordinary experience. “

St. John told me that he spoke to a young fan coming out at this Pride for the first time. The youngster was so grateful for the help when St. spent time talking to the young person.  “If that was all I accomplished with just that one person, this year at Pride” said St. John, “it was humbling and made the ban worthwhile.”

But that was clearly not all that they accomplished.  “I really felt like I was there for the people this time.  It was a very personal Pride experience for me.  Fan after fan came up to me and ironically while I was having a great time, they were reminding me and commiserating about the ban on my performing at Pride; many were sad and angry with San Francisco Pride Organizers and Clear Channel.”  According to St. John.

When I spoke to Fernando, he echoed the same sentiment, both he and Greg had a fantastic time; invited to the mike as they passed almost every performer and stage.  It seems it will be hard to keep them off future gigs  especially as their fame is growing exponentially.

St John said that the Lezgetreal Article had generated huge publicity for him and CBS and that awareness and recognition had increased “a hundred times. The number of people who came up to me at Pride was incredible and I had no idea how much buzz the article had generated.”  But it is much more than that – all tree hosts are much beloved and have given so much to the gay community that their presence would undoubtedly have NOT gone unn

St. John Spinning Despite BAN

oticed, regardless of the controversy.

Then came the unexpected, a coup of sorts, as they passed the Clear Channel Group, who had been pivotal in the Ban, the buddies sensed a  tasteless discomfort as their fellow DJ’s who, while perfectly entitled to replace the ex- clear channel and now CBS icons, must surely have been uneasy about the out and out ban.

Passing the Toyota Stage, fans rallied around and the next thing St. knew he was behind the controls and spinning the reputable mix to the delight of fans and all around.  Unplanned, and impromptu he found himself, not only caught in a united throng of festivities but showcasing his formidable talent nonetheless. No he had the best of both worlds.

While, St. John, has been the mix spin of Pride gig for fourteen years, the refusal to comment by Pride organizers, has prompted an omission begging for its own spin, any spin;   “Hey SF Pride- pray tell – who is pushing the buttons – what is going on here?” This is the resounding common denominator- a roar from comments generated by my earlier Article. “Has Pride been bought to the extent that the People of San Francisco are compelled to celebrate without their heroes? Is Pride the San Francisco Pride or is it now the Corporate Who has More Money Pride.

I do not know about you fellow queers, but as for me I have marched and paraded and celebrated in the name of San Francisco pride for many years and when I see those who model excellence for our community I feel good about myself and proud that my maker made me the perfect lesbian.

DJ Samantha Ronson and longtime on and off Lindsay Lohan flame spoke to Britian’s The Times magazine about her rocky relationship with Lohan. Ronson stated:

“I love her as a human being. I’m not gonna sit here and negate everything we had. You know, I could have a thousand times countered s**t with facts. It’s just not for me.”

“To be honest, being with her was more of a headache than anything else. Everything I was doing I was already doing (before Lindsay). It just meant there were paparazzi pictures documenting it. It sucked, because I’m a pretty private person and I’d managed to stay under the radar for so long. But at the same time I’m not gonna not hang out with somebody that I care about because of that s**t.

O well, there go any hopes of a reconciliation. How does that old saying go, “No matter how hot a girl is, there is always someone who is tired of her shit.” Samantha has stayed pretty much under the radar since the final split with Lindsay. She has also kept her dating life tightly under wraps.

Chely Wright has been out for a short time, but she has attended recent Pride festivities at the White House.  So far, her career has not suffered any from her decision to come out even though there was a certain amount of fear with regards to her being ostracized from the largely male driven and dominated Country music scene.

The Pentagon has been trying to reach out to the troops on the level of psychological pain that many of them have felt over the years spent serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Many are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.  This song makes a perfect accompaniment to that suffering.

The Pentagon is also trying to bring more LGBT Americans in from the cold by showing a certain level of acceptance with regards to the community.  Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell has done a lot of damage to the military’s standing in the LGBT Community, and by showcasing Wright, they may be trying to show a certain level of subliminal subtext of acceptance for lesbians and gays even as the possibility of the repeal of DADT is sensitive and hard to determine.  Many lesbians and gays are concerned that there will not be enough safeguards with the repeal of DADT going forward.

Adam Lambert oozes queer sexuality. It has gotten him into trouble in the past, specifically at last year’s AMA awards, where he kissed another man on stage. Because we have to protect the children from ‘the gay.’ Lambert was chastised by both the media and network execs for daring to be sexy. Plently of people have pointed out that this is a double standard, as heterosexual women are allowed to pretend to be lesbians during award shows. It seems like the pressure has finally gotten to poor Glambert.  

ET went “behind the scenes” on his new tour. ET asked Lambert if his new tour will be controversial and Lambert basically said, it won’t.

“I think that I’ve found a really great balance of things that have their edginess and they have their sexiness to them, but it’s done in a way where I don’t think it’s going to alienate anybody. It’s kind of just right — it’s right down the middle”

Its not fair that in order to be successful, Lambert has to go down the middle while artists like Lady Gaga get to go to the extreme. But Lambert insists that the tour will still be great, saying:

“When I was putting together the show there was a little bit of pressure and I was a little nervous about it,” he admits, continuing: “The nerves are all gone — and now it’s more excitement. Now it’s like, I can’t wait to show this to everybody. I can’t wait to share this with my fans.”

The “American Idol” alum promises his fans a show they won’t soon forget, with plenty of songs from his album For Your Entertainment and lots of dazzling visuals. “There are nods in there to Boy George, there are nods to Michael Jackson maybe, to ‘The Matrix’… There’s a little something for everybody and it’s all kind of put together in this big melting pot.”

The Dyke Diva, lesbian dance sensation, Lori Michaels burned up the soundstage at Bravo with her duet with Real Housewife of New Jersey Danielle Staub on ‘Watch What Happens’ with Andy Cohen last night. The song was great, but the real surprise was that Danielle was able to carry a tune. Or maybe the real surprise was when Danielle didn’t deny that she and Lori weren’t a couple? Black Eyed Peas singer and frequent solo artist Fergie (Fergie Ferg to some) has announced that she has a crush on Girls Aloud singer, Cheryl Cole. For those of you not familiar with Girls Aloud, they are a British pop sensation. Think new wave Spice Girls.

The bisexual but monogamous and married Fergie says of Cole:  ”Some girls you look at and think, “Damn, you shouldn’t look that good. She [Cole] has this quality that turns powerful men into giggly schoolboys. Any guy that ends up with her will be lucky. It might not be a man. I’d take her out on a date and she knows it.”

What a lovely almost love story. Cole is straight and has had many rumored affairs. She is currently rumored to be having a ‘close friendship’ with another Black Eyed Peas member, Will.i.am.

Christina Aguilera is still exploiting bisexuality, although she admits she is not one, in order to get attention for her new album, Bionic, which has been panned by critics and largely ignored by fans. Aguilera tells Out magazine:

“My husband knows that I get into girls. I think it’s fun to be open and play.The line is real to me. My husband and I check in with each other, but I definitely love women. I think they’re more attractive to the naked eye…”

Honestly, I really have no idea what she means by this. The annoying part is this:

She could never be a full-time lesbian – because she needs a man’s attention in the bedroom and couldn’t deal with another female’s ‘time of the month.’ Aguilera, who looks set to top the UK album chart with Bionic this weekend added: “I don’t think I could ever really be with a woman because that’s a lot of… estrogen…”"I’m a lot to deal with when it’s that time of the month, so I can’t imagine it times two. And… I love d**k. To be honest, that I cannot live without”.

 It’s okay to not be bisexual, Christina. We like you the way you are and we want you to be happy with dick. You are perpetuating sucky bisexual stereotypes. Stop trying so hard.

SOME BASIC STATICS ABOUT DEPRESSION & SUICIDE:

Statics show that Suicide is the ninth leading cause of death in the US with 31,204 deaths recorded in 1995. This approximates to around one death every seventeen minutes. There are more suicides than homicides each year in the US. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimated that “as many as 30% of completed youth suicides each year” are performed by gays and lesbians. Suicide risk is higher among homosexual youths not because of their inability to accept their sexual orientation but because of the risks attached to it and the lack of support.

“Better off dead than gay” is the general sentiment directly connected to the fact that more often than not they are bullied, discriminated against, and because they are not accepted and don’t find a way of life for their homosexuality in society.

These past few months have seen the lost of some high-profile figures to suicide, and we believe that the way the media cover these stories can potentially have a positive or negative impact on young people.  When sensationalized, coverage of suicide can potentially have a negative impact on a young person already struggling emotionally and/or contemplating suicide.  But we can also use these tragedies as a moment to talk about suicide in a productive way – to help people understand it better, learn the warning signs and think about what they can do to protect themselves or a friend.

Not only does music have the power to captivate us, it has the ability to shape our beliefs and enact social change. Musicians are no strangers to playing concerts and galas on behalf of charities around the world in an effort to raise social awareness. In a world connected by technology like never before, music can have an even greater impact on social awareness. While major musicians have always had the ability to reach millions to help raise public awareness for their causes, the rise of the Internet enables anybody to voice their concerns on issues they support.  And that is exactly what Billie Myers is doing – as  Margaret Mead wrote: ”Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. “I’m kissing all the boys and the girls…I’ve lost my mind.” Those are some of the lyrics in Christina Aguilera’s new single, ‘Not Myself Tonight” off her new album ‘Bionic’ which features a robotic Christina on the cover. The ‘Bionic’ cover is reminiscient of Lady Gaga, a criticism that Aguilera has encountered before, with her single “Supergirl’ when she wore Gaga-esque blinders and pretended not to know who Gaga was. Now, Christina is back to her old tricks, ones we haven’t seen since Dirrrty when she spread the message that wearing assless chaps sent a strong message about her feminism. In her video, she has bondage scenes with a woman and kisses and licks her, she wears her underwear and rolls around in bed with a man, with almost the exact same hairdo as Gaga in the sex scene in Paparazzi. She also wears diamond studded bondage gags and some kind of crazy thing over her eyes. It’s weird, it’s almost like a parody of Gaga and it comes across as desperate.

The Christina lesbian scenes in her new video make me sad for her. She’s trying too hard. Christina has been rumored to be bisexual and she has stated she isn’t. She has done a lot for the LGBT community as a straight ally and that’s great. That doesn’t mean she has to make out with other women in public to make her LGBT audience happy or titallated, no one is buying it.

This isn’t the first time this has happened to Aguilera. When she first entered the music scene, she was overshadowed by Britney Spears. In fact, that fateful night at the MTV Music Awards when Madonna and Britney kissed…the camera cut away before the audience could see that Aguilera also kissed Madonna. The Spears-Madonna kiss was all over the news, posters were made…Aguilera was completely left out.

Aguilera left the music scene for awhile to have a family and a baby. Then she came back with a pin-up themed offering, which was cute but didn’t really hit the mark. It was too gimicky, too retro. Her gimicks in each of her reinventions of herself have overshadowed her immense talent. She is a normal person, in the unstable fishbowl of Hollywood she has carved out a normal life for herself and her family. She should be proud of that and her fans are happy for her. If Christina focused on her voice, her talent and lost the gimicks, she could make more of a dent in the current music scene than she currently is.

Mediatakeout is reporting that Alicia Keys is pregnant and they have the pictures (at the link) to prove it. The father of the baby is presumed to be Keys’ live in boyfriend, rapper Swizz Beatz. Keys has long been the subject of lesbian rumors and we have had tons of readers write in to tell us that they have known Ms. Keys in the biblical sence. Sorry to dash your hopes ladies! I know that tons of you think she’s hot, including Hunter Valentine frontman, Kiyomi McCloskey. Chely Wright, the newly out Country singer, is now saying that she will accept the consequences of coming out as it relates to her country music career. She says in the upcoming People magazine issue:

“It’s the unforgivable,” says Wright, who this week announced to the world that she is a lesbian. “Historically, country music would rather an artist be a drunk — they even encourage and endorse that one. You get good money from Jim Beam to put that emblem on the side of your bus. I was on the Crown Royal tour, and I have to say it was one of my favorite tours. They would rather you were a drug addict than be gay. They will forgive you if you beat your wife, lose your kids to state, get six divorces, make a sex tape, get labeled as a tramp — any and all of it is better than being gay.”

It’s sad but true, a lot of country music is about being an alcoholic, cheater, etc. None of it is really about being gay. Surprise surprise? But with this statement, Wright has thrown the ball into the country music establishment’s court, she’s challenging them to either come out and openly say you don’t accept gays or accept it and not penalize her for it. Wright goes on to say that she feels like she never fit in:

“There is so much of country music that is genuinely me,” Wright said. “It’s not like I don’t fit in — I do and in so many ways. As a little kid growing up I sat there and read all the liner notes. They were the margins for imagination. Nobody knows what country music fans expect a country star to be more than me because I am a country music fan and always have been. I felt like the people on the album were telling me their story and they were looking right back at me. Loretta Lynn was looking into my eyes and saying, ‘I’m singing this song for you.’ Those artists were welded into my mind. Those artists were about God, family and faith. And, you know? I am too.”

 ”I just didn’t see anybody like me. And I knew I wasn’t going to be the first. I knew I was never going to make it on the Opry stage or be able to record an album. I knew I would never get a record deal.”

 ”I don’t think a lot of people will come forward and condemn me. Some might but there won’t be many. It’s the quiet haters that do a lot of damage in the world.”

As of right now, it doesn’t seem that there has been much damage to Wright’s country music career, there hasn’t been a backlash from that quarter yet. However, there is some concern in the online queer community that Wright is coming out for monetary gain. I can see that side of it, but the woman has never asked another woman out on a date, the time has come for her to come out of the closet. Especially since there are queer 12 year old girls who have already asked their first girl on a date. (Isn’t it great how the world is changing?) Wright just seems to have so many hang ups about being a lesbian/huge huge dyke that it is plausible that this isn’t monetarily related, as her country career is hanging in the balance. Hopefully her fans won’t abandon her now. Also, as GLAAD pointed out, anytime a celebrity comes out and has the courage to live an honest life, they make the world a little better and a little queerer. Ok, they didn’t say it quite that way, but that’s the gist of it.

Melissa Etheridge appeared on her old friend, Ellen’s talk show yesterday. Melissa performed the title track of her album, Fearless Love. As someone from a generation where lip-syncing is the norm, it always amazes me how good Melissa’s voice sounds live.

Then came the interview. For those of you who don’t remember, Melissa’s and Tammy’s twins are three years old and she has a boy and a girl. Her kids with Julie are 13 and 11. They recap that she is completely cancer free and that cancer was a symptom of her out of order life and that now she has things back in order and is very happy. (Tammy reference?) Melissa also talks about American Idol, Crystal Bowersox, whose guitar she signed. She is a fan as is Ellen. Ellen then announced that everyone in the audience is getting a copy of Fearless Love.

Annnd end scene.  Not exactly the revelatory interview everyone was expecting when we learned that Melissa would finally be appearing on Ellen’s show again. What did you think? Are you satisfied with the Ellen interview? Did it clear up any of your questions?

Tammy also mentions that no one has asked her for her side of the story. I almost feel bad for her, even though anyone who reads this blog knows that she isn’t my biggest fan. It’s surprising that in the aftermath, no one is asking Tammy for her side of the story. I guess no lesbian news outlets want to piss off Melissa Etheridge.
