San Francisco: Breaking – For the past 15 years openly gay, renowned DJ, radio host, and creator of San Francisco’s longest running global dance radio show “House Nation, who goes by the name St John, has been a feature, honing his iconic talent and superstar ACT at the annual San Francisco LGBT Pride.

But this year something smells a little off.  Sources inform us, that the event which would usually pride itself on tradition has succumbed to the demands of one of its  corporate sponsors, CLEAR CHANNEL.   Clear Chanel (yes the very clear channel, air-wave home to Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck,) and a major SF Pride 2010 sponsor has demanded the banning of ST. John and two other well known GAY Morning DJ’s; all three axed, shunned and rejected despite their years of entrenched relationship with the event.

St. John, described as  Superstar in the growing world of  mix was extremely popular at Clear Channel’s Wild 94.9 for 14 years, and then moved to CBS’s. Movin’ 99.7, KMVQ-FM.

St. John’s energetic style has made him a staple internationally from Brazil to Canada, and nation-wide from New York’s Limelight to San Francisco’s Ruby Skye. With multiple CD releases on major labels such as Thrive and UBL Recordings, St. John has sold over a quarter-million albums and in 2010 continues to work on exciting new projects.

The exclusion may be attributed to corporate wrangling and competitive venom between CBS and Clear Channel. Yet on wonders just how San Francisco pride fits into this mix of loyalty gone awry?

Since it was not only St John who made the move, but also other DJ’s and Michael Martin, once Program Director for Clear Channel and now Vice President of Programming for CBS RADIO San Francisco. The retribution could also be attributed to Martin who did not hide his excitement when St John left  Clear Channel to join CBS: “I am beyond excited to have him join MOViN!  His skill, passion, precision and drive to win are an inspiration to all who work with him and the detriment to those who try to compete against him,” said Martin.

Should we as a marginalized and discriminated against community stand behind our heroes? Or should we accept demanding sponsors who are giving SF Pride the profits off the  millions made and paid to the likes of homophobic and anti American  Limbaugh and Beck.

For St. John the feelings were mutual when he joined CBS; – “I’m thrilled to be reunited with programming legend Michael Martin. Together we’ve dominated ratings in both the Bay Area and Los Angeles and when St John moved asserted: “I can’t wait to work with him to do it again at my new home CBS RADIO San Francisco.”

Each year, Pride works with the event media partners, such as Clear Channel home to the likes of right wing lunatics – Limbaugh and Beck, to bring a televised and  radio broadcasts of the SF Pride Parade. SF Pride producers assert that they have been able to expand the coverage of the Parade to include a full-length, unedited online broadcast in addition to televised coverage the evening following the Parade’s conclusion.

Since St. John left clear channel, it is became apparent that punitive motives would follow the star, and that attempts would  be made to relegate his well earned reverence in the world of cool music and especially his vested platform at PRIDE.

St. John, clearly hurt by San Francisco Pride’s rejection of his talent, and his years of service was loathe to make any derogatory remarks at all either toward SF Pride or Clear Channel.

From my interview it was clear that not only is St John a good man, he is modest and is not willing to speak of  the enormous contributions he has made to fighting HIV/AIDS and helping those in need.

In furthering his career he is now being punished by his own community.  Not only is he a talent but he is an open voice to tens and thousands of a younger generation who hold him in the highest esteem, reaching across the gay- straight lines amongst the youngsters, where it really counts.

When asked for his comments  he told me: “Its been a long  journey with San Francisco Pride; I am proud  to have  been  apart of a great service to the community and hope that maybe I can find a way to continue to be so.”

I will say one thing and that is if Clear Channel tried to impose a ban on any gay performer of any kind with a history and credentials such as ST, John, I for one would rather risk their sponsorship!

The Organizers of San Francisco Pride were contacted for comment but no response was received.

The Dinah gave it its all this 20th Anniversary and Meredith was there too – OMG !   We at Lezgetreal heard that you are all having an amazing time at the Dinah. In fact when the earthquake hot (I mean hit…sheez mel! ) we here at LGR were so concerned that we sent a dove to check up on you, her name is Blackberry;  you saw her flying overhead?

Guess what Mariah’s spokesperson told us?  We asked “Is anyone injured; are they scared?

Answer

no injuries,

everyone was WAY TOO DRUNK to be scared!”

It was (of course in those almost youthful years) the party highlight  of my life, and so I made the pilgrimage for some years thereafter.   Recently I interviewed  Mariah Hanson an old friend from those days and was delighted to acknowledge her 20th anniversary in Palm Springs with The Dinah’s exciting events for this year – It Starts today.   HELLO GALS!

For the next few days we will be sharing highlights and fun from Palm Springs – if you have never been – go – next year – never before have you seen or will you ever see so many lesbians in one place. Its an amazing experience especially for those who are coming out and wonder of this is a worthy world.

Campbell Brown’s show on CNN featured a  brave young woman.  Coming out at 18 can be quite a call, one has parents to deal with who may not have such an easy time with the idea.    Having the courage to take your lesbian girlfriend to the Prom is yet another act of bravery, then when the PROM is canceled for all and one must face one’s school friends and peers – well that is yet another courageous event- however what could be more commendable than the 18 year old standing up for her rights on national TV?

Well that is what we saw this evening; the astounding resolve and confidence  of a young lesbian teen who willingly speaks for  her values and beliefs – she represents her most important value- simply “to be herself,”   as she told CNN. She is proud to be herself.  Such acceptance must start at home with Parents. This may be a lesson for all.  Truth iught never be feared.

This is a future leader and a poster person for equality.  Young and assured, our new-found hero, young Ms. Constance McMillen,  is presented by Lezgetreal as our current HERO and Lesbian of the Month.

Today Lezgetreal reached out personally by telephone and in a Blog / News Post to a variety of celebrities with the idea to host a PROM for all the Teens impacted by the cancellation by the Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton, Mississippi.

We are waiting for answers from a few approached and are reaching out to our fans / readers for ideas, donations and support in general. Imagine a GAY and LESBIAN Prom in Mississippi- hey where are the Black Eyed Peas? Now THAT would be kewl. I have a Feeling about a GOOD- GOOD Time…

This Grand Prix of Lesbian action gets the checkered flag, yet again.  Mariah Hanson has succeed in  another exclusive –line up,  adding today’s  announcement today of  one time reunion  Salt-n-Peppa  and Spinerella.

Twenty years ago, I was one lipstick-lesbian who gratefully swirled to the ecstatic innovations of Mariah, a  pioneer in the development of the Dinah Shore Golf Classic Party-side event.  Now with an absolute “hail Mariah,” I look back and note the consistency and tireless dedication to our community for years of ‘right-on-ness, ‘ earning Mariah the coveted title of  “THE Dinah!”

Mariah and I spoke last month and I was amazed at how her energetic passion has maintained its proactive state of creativity.

O’Donnell’s Dinah show will officially mark her long-awaited, and overdue, return to stand-up – a debut which O’Donnell distinctively wanted to offer as an exclusive to Mariah Hanson and Club Skirts Presents The Dinah®.

Commemorating its landmark 20^th Anniversary, The Dinah 2010 will take place March 31 through April 4, 2010 at The Hilton Hotel, The Hyatt Regency and the Palm Springs Convention Center. Despite the current economic climate, ticket sales are up from last year and the Hilton Hotel sold out in record time over the holidays. The newly renovated high-end Hyatt Regency is almost at capacity.

For the first ever since her coming out, “Family Ties” actress Meredith Baxter will make a public appearance joining the prestigious panel of celesbians and entertainment luminaries that will grace the catwalk in support of the LGBT community’s fight for equality.

 “It was important for me to invite Meredith Baxter to participate in this fashion show,” comments Hanson, “it was very courageous of her to come out the way she did and to right off the bat publicly take such an activist stand for same-sex marriage. Hamburger Mary’s is a popular restaurant in the gay community and the Long Beach, CA location is at a prime spot on Alamitos and Broadway. The parking is a bit tight, but inside Hamburger Mary’s you’ll find a dancefloor, bar, pool table and outside patio with flat screens placed througout; which turn the restaurant into a night-time hotspot for locals in the LGBT community certain nights of the week. Suprisingly, many of the people who participated in the call to action to come down and sign the petition in Long Beach were pleasantly suprised to find the doors open and our team waiting for them.

Some petition signers enjoyed lunch, others had a drink, some played pool, and others mingled.

My wife and I were on the outdoor patio, sprinkled with friends and family who dropped by throughout the day. We made a few new friends, and put up with a few attitudes, but overall it was a pleasant event and the staff at Hamburger Mary’s was friendly and accomodating; making sure to sign our petition as well. Talking with the owner of the Long Beach Hamburger Mary’s I found that he is also the owner of the West Hollywood location, and he recently took over the Long Beach location, bringing some WeHo flair to the LBC.

The previous owners of the Long Beach location had a different vision, and Hamburger Mary’s LB was a thing of the past for a short time. The new owner is bringing a different spin and new vision to the restaurant, introducing weekly events such as Karaoke with the legendary Jackie Beat on Tuesdays, brunch on Saturday and Sunday, and Little Lambs Day on Mondays when kids eat for FREE. The food is fresh, fabulous, and satisfying; and come to find out Hamburger Mary’s is a regular supporter of the HRC. This means that spending your Pink Money at the Long Beach and West Hollywood Hamburger Mary’s supports equality! Of course you know that I am liking that! Plus the bar staff was extra sweet and made sure to card me when I ordered a drink so if you’re looking for an ego-boost here’s your chance, LOL.

On Wednesday, I stayed home for most of the day until I picked up my nieces from school and took them to the mall, where I did window shopping. I wore my Curve Magazine t-shirt and got several glances =). After the mall, I dropped off my nieces at their house and then headed home to get ready for a NO On H8 Benefit for Equality California.

It was my first time attending The Ian Harvie Show and it was unlike anything I’ve ever been to. It was totally unique and hilarious! My friends and I had such a great time, we literally laughed out loud. Always queer, authentic, funny, and entertaining (show’s motto) was true indeed. There were a couple of stand-up sets (Erin Foley made my heart melt), music performances, monologues, and group discussions. It was like a mini queer comic conference.

The topic of the discussion was to share a holiday experience, some good holiday cheer, you know? But it was like all the stories came from a John Waters film. This wasn’t your normal decorating the tree/baking cookies story….there was piss…blood….shit…and cock. For some reason cock seemed to be the main topic. No matter how the conversation was flowing, it always ended up back at cock. Erin Foley was so cute throwing little holiday references out to distract everyone from their cock stories.

The set ended with Margaret Cho singing a couple of songs and impressing the audience with her recently learned, 3 weeks, guitar playing. That deserved a standing ovation. She could’ve had me fooled the way she was strumming those chords. When I fist learned how to play, it was always difficult to play and sing at the same time but Margaret honestly performed her songs flawlessly. The Protest Song (Morman) was the shout out for Proposition H8: “SHOVE PROPOSITION 8 UP THEIR ASS!”

After the show, I got to speak with Margaret Cho and she saw that I was wearing a Tegan & Sara button and she told me that she is working on a music album and that T&S were going to record a song with her. That is beyond amazing! I told her that I was looking forward to that and I also mentioned how much I thought she rocked.

Most of my friends are out partying it up this weekend, but I am home tonight getting ready for a night out with my wife tomorrow. I love to get dressed up and go out dancing after dinner and some drinks. My wife knows all the good spots and usually chooses where we go, and over the years I have developed my favorites.

Since I live in Southern California, there are a few gay clubs and lesbian bars in my area, and the closest spot to me that I like is The Executive Suite in Long Beach (website). This is a longtime favorite spot for a Saturday night, and for the LGBT community to get together and party before and after the Long Beach Gay Pride Festival.

I also like Club Ripples which has two different dance floors and a karaoke area for those that are interested in showing their vocal talents(website). I prefer Friday nights at Club Ripples which is referred to as Debra’s @ The Beach. Check out Debra’s MySpace page here for pics.

If we just want to have a drink and play some pool, then we head on over to Club Broadway (link). We used to like to go to Hamburger Mary’s in Long Beach because it was right next to Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles which is always good at 2am when you’ve had a bit to drink. There is a Hamburger Mary’s in West Hollywood (link) that you could check out, which offers more entertainment and food choices.

Also out in Los Angeles and Hollywood area is The Palms Bar which has a nice size dance floor and friendly bartenders (website). The Palms is also located right near a secure parking garage which is good. We have fun at Girl Bar and have also been over to Circus Disco, but they do play a lot of club music and I am more of a hip hop fan.

My favorite spot is on Tuesdays and whenever my wife and I can get away on a Tuesday this is a guilty pleasure of ours. Michelle’s XXX, also known as Peanuts, is a sexy spot for lesbians to dance, drink, and watch Michelle’s girls put on a great show. If you’ve never been to Michelle’s XXX, you really don’t know what you’re missing. All I can say is that the ladies at Michelle’s XXX leave visions in your mind you will cherish forever. *wink* Michelle’s XXX also hosts the LA Gay Pride After Party so be sure to check out their website if you are heading out to that this weekend. You can also find Michelle’s XXX on MySpace here. Michelle’s XXX does offer Club Sexy on Saturdays every so often, so be sure to add yourself to their mailing list if that is something are interested in.
