Sacramento – Today the State Senate passed legislation that will bar the State of California from entering into contracts in excess of $100,000 with businesses and other entities that deny equal benefits to the same-sex spouses of their employees. The Equal Benefits bill (SB 117), authored by Senator Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego) and sponsored by Equality California, passed in a 21-15 vote.

In 2003, the State Legislature passed a bill authored by then-Assemblymember Kehoe and sponsored by Equality California that prohibited discrimination in benefits between employees with spouses and employees with registered domestic partners.

“Studies have shown that employees who are treated fairly have higher retention rates and are more productive,” said Jim Carroll, interim executive director of Equality California. “The Equal Benefits bill both advances equality, benefits business and ensures that our precious tax dollars do not subsidize discrimination.”

Beginning in 1996 in San Francisco, Equality California’s leadership has been working with city councils and the California legislature to pass equal benefits ordinances. Since then, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Oakland, Berkeley, San Mateo County, San Diego and Santa Monica have adopted such ordinances. Other cities with similar ordinances, include Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Minneapolis, and Miami Beach.

“Providing the same benefits to an employee with a domestic partner, or same-sex or opposite-sex spouse ensures that workers receive equal pay for equal work,” said Senator Christine Kehoe. “California should lead the way for other employers to provide benefits that are non-discriminatory.”

It is estimated that thousands of businesses and other entities now offer equal benefits as a direct result of these laws, including automobile companies, most airlines and many Fortune 500 companies and small businesses.

The bill now moves to the State Assembly.

Equality California (EQCA) is the largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights advocacy organization in California. Over the past decade, Equality California has strategically moved California from a state with extremely limited legal protections for LGBT individuals to a state with some of the most comprehensive civil rights protections in the nation. Equality California has passed more than 70 pieces of legislation and continues to advance equality through legislative advocacy, electoral work, public education and community empowerment. www.eqca.org

As the day has wound down and darkness falls in Uganda, we report with deep concern and sadness from Lezgetreal. Our friends at SDGLN are holding our hands and on top of today’s happenings in Uganda – specifically at the hearings for the Kill-the Gays, anti-homosexuality Bill. The Rev. Canon Albert Ogle and Bishop Christopher Senyonjo have been providing direct reports and these can be found via SDGLN and Warren Throckmorten - as well as the AP reports.

UPDATE 3: Here is a report from SDGLN, a San Diego BLOG and Media outletwhich quotes Bishop Senyonjo speaking about his experienced in today’s hearings:
“Bishop Christopher Senyonjo spent most of today at a hearing by the Ugandan Legal Parliamentary Committee, which is charged with compiling a report for Parliament on the future of the “Kill the Gays” bill proposed by the rabidly anti-gay lawmaker David Bahati.”

Ogle Reports, “The seven-member committee will make recommendations following several days of public response to the Bahati bill,” said Bishop Christopher, one of Uganda’s leading voices fighting homophobia in Africa in an effort to advance human rights.

“Supporters of the bill included pastor Martin Ssempa and others who continue to claim homosexuality is imported from the West, is a threat to Ugandan children and needs to be legally stopped,” he said.

Today’s hearing marked the final testimony, and a committee report is expected immediately. Some veteran observers of Ugandan politics predict that the bill could come up for a vote as soon as Wednesday.

Bishop Christopher said he is convinced that the bill will move forward to Parliament and if passed, it will be up to the president to veto it. International pressure from the U.S., the United Kingdom, the European Union and human rights organizations is intense, but Ugandans are being greatly influenced by anti-gay American missionaries from the Religious Right and from the extremely conservative Anglican Church in Africa.”

When the bishop spoke at the hearing, one of the parliamentarians thought that he was going to support the bill and was surprised to hear him opposing it.

“I am not advocating for the LGBT community,” Bishop Christopher told the astonished member. “I am just dealing with reality.”
The bishop spoke specifically to the effect that criminalization of homosexuality has on access to information about HIV and AIDS, prevention and care.

“If we criminalize the LGBT community further, it will drive Ugandans further underground and compromise the relationship of medical, counselors and clergy that is sacrosanct and needs to remain confidential,” the bishop said. “How can we expect doctors to treat everyone when this bill will require them to report on their patients who are LGBT?”

Three other reports were given by members of the Civil Society Coalition dealing with the legal and medical issues that would be created by the passage of the controversial bill. Two attorneys and a local physician, Dr. Sagmugoma, addressed the issues of discrimination and the major violation of human rights that would transpire if the bill was passed.

Further testimony was given by the Ugandan Human Rights Commission on the bill’s violation of international law, particularly requiring any Ugandan living abroad to be extradited back to Uganda to face prison for being gay.

“Punishing someone for being who they are violated human rights,” the bishop said.

UPDATE 2: The AP just released a story which summarizes the situation after the end of hearings today. The next step is for the committee chair Stephen Tashobya to write a report from the hearings. Tashobya is quoted as saying he would have the report completed by tomorrow. However, he just told me a few minutes ago that he cannot promise to complete the report by tomorrow. He did say that he would complete the report before the end of Parliament which is the 18th of May. When I asked him how the Parliament could vote on a bill in this manner, he said that the Speaker (Edward Ssekandi) makes those decisions. Theoretically, the Speaker could call Parliament into session anytime before May 18 for a vote on any left over bills.

According to Tashobya, the Company bill did not pass today, and the Procurement bill was pushed to tomorrow, thus making it even more difficult for any new bills to come to the floor before Speaker Ssekandi’s end of official business date of May 11. The AHB coming to the floor appears to hinge on the completion of the committee report by Mr. Tashobya sometime tomorrow and the Speaker’s willingness to bring it to the floor on Wednesday. If this does not happen, the Speaker would have to call the MPs together sometime during the festivities of the Presidential inauguration and the swearing in of the new Parliament on the 18th.

UPDATE: I just spoke with LGBT advocate Brian Nkoyooyo (about 5pm there) who was in the hearings today. He said that the Human Rights Commission, Sexual Minorities Uganda and the Coalition on Human Rights presented testimony in opposition to the bill. The hearings are still being held, although he did not know who else intended to testify. He was not sure if hearings would take place tomorrow but believed that the bill could come to the Parliament for discussion by Wednesday.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, May 3rd 2011. In March I attended the first meeting at the DOJCD in South Africa, as a spokesperson with Ndumie Funda of Luleki Sizwe, and we outlined the need for reforms and hate crimes legislation, especially against corrective rape of Lesbians in South Africa.

SA Gay Flag

Today, Eugene Brockman and Henry Bantjes, report for LGR, from the second meeting following the one back in March. It was decided that the meetings would result in the formation of a Task Force, history in the making, as South Africa moves forward toward supporting and enforcing the LGBT community’s rights under its all inclusive Constitution.

The right to safety is imperative and as it stands, the culture of homophobia must change in South Africa to one where a lesbian is free to work outside her home without fear of brutality, rape and murder.

The agenda for this second meeting might have been to address corrective rape, but the result is an intervention plan and task team against all forms of hate crime against LGBTI citizens of South Africa. I sincerely hope this does not take the focus off corrective rape which is endemic in South Africa, especially heightened by the Easter day brutality where a 14 year old lesbian was savagely beaten, raped and murdered in such a crime.

Department of Justice representative Mr. Tladi Tlali; observed: “The fact that there was a meeting on the 14th of March and again a meeting today, with the representatives of various departments of government and the progress we have made proves that this is a sensitive government that listens and is open to collaboration with its people.”

Through the work of Ndumie Funda’s against corrective / curative rape of lesbians, she has been able to make her small organization Luleki Sizwe into a pioneer for LGBTI rights. Ndumie made headlines by first raising a 170 000 signature petition, then a secondary petition on Avaaz.org which reached 920 000 signatures, and now Ndumie has successfully engaged the government and department of justice on addressing targeted rape and assault against lesbians.

A group of LGBTI representatives from Triangle Project, Free Gender, End Hate Crime, Rape Crisis etc. invited by Luleki Sizwe attended the meeting along with representatives from governmental departments of justice (DOJ), national prosecutors office (NPA), social development, crime victims empowerment groups and SAPS.

An intervention plan was announced that has been put together with a 6 person task team that arepresents a cluster of government departments spanning from judiciary, policing, social development etc. The government has also put it to Luleki Sizwe and other NGO’s in attendance to select 6 further national representatives of the LGBTI community with grassroots following and support, who are in existing working structures for the LGBTI community.

On the agenda for the task team will be:

- the terms of reference for operation.

- situational analysis for needs of victims of hate crime based on sexual orientation.

- a legislative intervention plan,

- a public awareness strategy co-developed with LGBT NGO’s and communities.

- LGBT sensitive shelters and social development.

The hardest of these would be the way forward with a legislative intervention plan. Though there are the beginnings of a hate crime bill the government and Department of Justice do recognize (especially with the recent murder of Nxolo Nogwaza) that corrective rape is reaching a fever pitch and should be addressed as a crisis. Therefore the NPA and DOJ are looking at methods to strengthen the Constitutional rights afforded its LGBT community. Possible methods are to:

- amend the sexual offences act, with sexual orientation as an aggravating circumstance, which would lead to heavier sentences.

- the use of any magistrates court as an equality court to address any harassment, discrimination or hate speech. This could be a viable preventative measure, which does not require paying for a lawyer.

- to consult on the minimum sentences for hate crimes inclusive or rape on the basis of sexual orientation.

- to stress LGBT cases for sensitivity in the service charter for victims of crime.

Henry Bantjez & Ndumie Funda at Today's Meeting

There was a strong emphasis placed on sensitivity training in both of the SAPS, DOJ, NPO and Social Development structures in the short and medium term. Luleki Sizwe also stressed that the department of Education should get involved to create tolerance within the youth of South Africa.

There was also a commitment on long term issues, such as national public awareness and engaging with traditional and spiritual leaders to break through homophobia in communities.

Ndumie Funda from Luleki Sizwe stated in retrospect that: “I acknowledge the response from the government. It shows that they are willing to work with the gay community, but we continue to fight for LGBTI rights until the last innocent drops of drops of blood are spilled because of hate.”

LGBTI representatives will meet on the 10th of May to decide on the final six representatives who are to be announced on the 12th of May 2011 to the Department of Justice.

The intervention plan and task team will gear into action on the 15th of July, a day before Youth Day, celebrating the historic uprisings of Soweto.

This is an amazing accomplishment after two years of begging for attention. I am pleased to note that LezGetReal and Melanie Nathan in her capacity as Ambassador to Africa for MEUSA, played an integral two year role in the publicity generated that served as the impetus for the Petitions mentioned above, as well as Melanie’s draft reforms which continue to serve as the basis for the demands and changes needed.

In October of 2009 an email was sent by an active duty officer to several friends regarding harrassment he was receiving under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. Within a week, the same friends had launched a website, citizensforrepeal.com which focused on sharing personal stories of people affected by the policy. The same group started an online facebook group that was growing by several hundred a day.

Up to the repeal signing by the President in December, OutServe continued to aggressively push active duty in the media and launching new campaigns such as videos that featured straight servicemembers deployed speaking on why DADT needed to be repealed. OutServe’s staff was invited to the Presidential signing of the bill in December.

Currently OutServe is the leader in providing public information regarding the implementation training. It will continue to grow as a social and professional support organization for LGBT active duty. OutServe has now connected over 2,600 LGBT servicemembers via hidden social media and has over 40 worldwide chapters including Afghanistan and Iraq.

There is much to be done.

Our underground heroes JD Smith and TY Walrod will speak publicly for the first time, since hiding while advocating within the military to help repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. (DADT)

If one reads the articles on LezGetReal, site at http://lezgetreal.com/?s=OUTSERVE, one will note the extent of the risk and service of the founders and members of OUTSERVE; an extraordinary journey and contribution.

Now it is our turn to maintain their ability to stay the course to ensure that the repeal of DADT is implemented and our LGBT service members continue to receive the support they need. There is no other group that can provide the “inside story” in the same way as OUTSERVE – having built a large network of LGBT military membership in the service.

OUTSERVE is imperative allies for the equality battles ahead, even beyond the realm of the repeal and its implementation. They will serve as a unique outlet for the Stories that must still be told – the stories that will expose he continued inequity that military servicemembers will continue to suffer for as long as all LGBT people in the USA are second class citizens.

The Military stories will expose and shed an imperative light on the effect of The Defense of Marriage Act on military couples when it comes to matters such as housing and immigration (green cards for same-sex spouses,) thereby adding impetus for the repeal of the former and necessity for interim solutions for the latter.

This Saturday evening is the big Fund raising event in the San Francisco Bay Area, – If you cannot attend – you are encouraged to make a contribution of whatever size to keep this extraordinary group going strong. They are needed for our gays and lesbians serving in the Military and also in the National quest for full equality.

Note: Melanie Nathan of LGR and Michelle Meow of Swirl Radio will be there on Saturday night to interview JD SMITH and TY WALROD- we hope to meet you too.

Amongst the work OUTSERVE does is act as a representative to highlight and promote the service of Gays in the Military such as in the case of fallen gay heroes:

To date, nearly 6,000 Americans have been killed in the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition to Corporal Wilfahrt, at least three LGBT soldiers have died in combat since “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’s” conditional repeal was signed into law on December 22, 2010.

“Corporal Wilfahrt epitomized the courage, dedication and selflessness that gay and straight troops alike have shown in battle since our nation’s founding,” said Jonathan Hopkins, OutServe spokesperson and gay combat veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. “Ultimately Corporal Wilfahrt’s story is not about differences or politics, but the values that unite all who wear the proud uniform of our nation—loyalty to eachother, love of country, and the willingness to give their lives in its defense.”

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Melanie Nathan – April 13, 2011-

SAN FRANCISCO – AB 9 seeks to Create a Safer School Environment for California Students. Today the California Assembly Education Committee passed Seth’s Law in a 7-3 vote. AB 9, also known as Seth’s Law, is a comprehensive bill that addresses school bullying by providing California schools with specific tools to prevent and address the pervasive problem in order to create a safe school environment for all students.

The bill is named “Seth’s Law” in memory of Seth Walsh, a 13 year-old gay student from Tehachapi, California, who took his life in September 2010, after facing years of relentless anti-gay harassment at school. Wendy Walsh, Seth’s mother, provided powerful testimony in support of the bill today.

“I can’t bring my son back,” said Wendy Walsh. “But the California legislature can make a difference today to protect young people across our state just like Seth, who are or are thought to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Schools need to take harassment and bullying seriously when parents or students tell them about it, and when they see it and hear it on the school campus.”

The bill was authored by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano and co-sponsored by a coalition of organizations advancing LGBT equality and justice, including the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Equality California, the ACLU’s California Affiliates, and Gay-Straight Alliance Network.

“As a former teacher, I know how important it is for our students to feel safe at school. Each day throughout California, LGBT youth experience harassment. Seth’s Law will give schools the necessary tools to prevent any young person from being bullied, harassed or worse because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and expression,” said Ammiano.

AB 9 would ensure that every school in California implements updated anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies and programs that include actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, as well as race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, disability, and religion. It would also empower students and parents to know what their rights are and how to advocate for them.

“Children should never experience fear each time they walk onto their school campuses, dreading harassment and bullying by others—yet, this is the reality for thousands of kids,” said National Center for Lesbian Rights Executive Director Kate Kendell. “Schools should be safe environments for children, and everyone should look forward to the day that Seth’s Law goes into effect, providing educators and parents the tools they need to establish a school-wide culture of respect.”

Schools often do not have the tools or knowledge to adequately protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and others from bullying, which remains a serious issue across California and the rest of the nation. Students, parents, and school employees often don’t know what the rules are or what to do if bullying occurs.

“We thank Wendy Walsh for her courageous advocacy to make schools safer for all young people,” said Equality California Interim Executive Director Jim Carroll. “No child should ever fear for their safety at school simply because of who they are. Seth’s Law will ensure that all students and school officials have the knowledge and tools they need to protect against bullying, harassment, assault and intimidation. We commend the legislators who supported this vital piece of legislation.”

GSA Network reviewed the websites of every school district in California and found that only 34 percent post their Student Non-Discrimination Policy. Of those, only 84 percent include sexual orientation and only 4 percent include gender identity and gender expression. Furthermore, only 24 percent of school district websites in California provide information for students and parents on where and how to file a complaint.

“Public schools have tremendous power and responsibility to protect students from bullying and harassment,” said Elizabeth Gill, Staff Attorney with the California Affiliates of the American Civil Liberties Union. “Better school procedures and policies to prevent and address bullying will make a safer environment for students who are suffering, and can even save lives.”

In a recent national survey, nine out of 10 LGBT students reported being harassed at school. The problem persists in California as well, with LGBT students reporting significant harassment. The California Safe Schools Coalition reported in 2010 that 42 percent of California students who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual and 62 percent who identify as transgender reported being harassed at least once based on gender non-conformity.

What’s more, young people often face bullying and harassment based on what their peers perceive to be their sexual orientation, regardless of whether they identify as being LGBT. According to the most recent California Healthy Kids Survey 12 percent of 7th graders and 10 percent of 9th graders reported being harassed based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation.

The consequences of bullying and harassment can include falling grades, depression, and risk of suicide. LGBT youth are three times more likely than their heterosexual peers to seriously consider suicide.

Create strong and clear anti-harassment policies and programs, if they don’t have them already.

Have a system in place to ensure that all reports of harassment are taken seriously, addressed quickly, and that parents and students understand the process of making these complaints.

Explain the harmful impact of bullying and discrimination to students and staff.

Provide ongoing professional development for teachers, school counselors and administrators about identifying and stopping harassment and discrimination and creating a school-wide culture of inclusion and respect for difference.

“Seth’s Law will ensure that students know their rights and schools understand their obligations to project youth from bullying and harassment,” said Gay-Straight Alliance Network Executive Director Carolyn Laub. “Student activists in Gay-Straight Alliance clubs across the state are working hard to make their schools safer for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and lawmakers owe it to them to do their part by supporting Seth’s Law.”

Equality California is the largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights advocacy organization in California.
The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) will honor four trailblazers in the movement for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality at its 34th Anniversary Celebration on May 21, 2011 at the Metreon Cityview in San Francisco.

NCLR’s Anniversary Celebration is often called “the party of the year,” attracting a sell-out crowd of 1,700 people from across the country to celebrate victories in the movement for full LGBT equality, and to honor those who have become role models for thousands of people through their unfailing commitment to justice.

The Awards and Honorees this May will be:-

The Voice and Visibility Award: Country Music Star Chely Wright and her father Stan Wright

The Voice and Visibility Award honors an individual who has helped to give voice and visibility to LGBT people. This year’s award goes to country music star Chely Wright and her father Stan Wright. Chely has shown unwavering courage since coming out in 2010, at the height of her career in Nashville, as the first openly LGBT country music star. She became a role model for others by sharing the painful, inspiring, and moving story of the heartache she suffered by trying to live in the closet, and the despair that finally propelled her to choose between taking her own life or coming out.

Chely has used her fame to speak out about the terrible shame, pain, and harm that are inflicted on LGBT people—and especially on LGBT youth—by a culture that still views LGBT people as sinful and immoral.

Chely’s father, Stan Wright, has stood by her side through every step of her journey, showing his unconditional love—an example for LGBT children and adults who may fear losing their family’s loving support by living authentically. Chely and Stan continue to stand up and speak out as people of faith, unchanged by the fact that Chely is a lesbian.

Spirit Award: George Washington University Basketball Player Kye Allums

The Spirit Award honors an individual whose strength of character embodies and invigorates the spirit of the LGBT community. This year’s award goes to George Washington University basketball player Kye Allums. Kye is a pioneer in the world of intercollegiate sports. In November 2010, he became the first Division I basketball player to come out as transgender, demonstrating extraordinary bravery and character in living genuinely and unapologetically as a transgender man. Through his simple act of continuing to play the sport he loves as the man he is, he has helped to change the landscape for other athletes.

Justice Award: Former Belmont University Soccer Coach Lisa Howe

The Justice Award honors an individual who has shown the courage and perseverance to fight for justice and sacrificed to make broad social change for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. This year’s award goes to former Belmont University soccer coach Lisa Howe. Howe stood strong in the face of ignorance and bigotry, becoming a role model for not only her players and students, but this country, by living honestly and loving her family. She has put a face on the continued need to fight employment discrimination in Nashville, Tennessee, where Belmont University is located, and in every corner of this country. Lisa has helped to transform the hearts and minds of her community and colleagues, inspiring them to launch an unprecedented public discussion about the place of openly LGBT people in private Christian colleges and universities, and prompting Belmont to change its non-discrimination policy to include sexual orientation.

Founder’s Award: The Honorable Donna Hitchens

The Founder’s Award acknowledges a person whose life embodies NCLR’s vision and values of equality and justice and who has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to activism on behalf of our communities. This year’s award goes to the Honorable Donna Hitchens, who, known as one of the nation’s most well-respected judges, retired from the San Francisco County Superior Court in November 2010. She has changed the lives of thousands of people through her commitment to justice, not only while serving on the San Francisco County Superior Court bench, but by founding the National Center for Lesbian Rights in 1977, where her vision of fighting for LGBT equality continues to change the nation’s legal landscape.

Special Guests

NCLR’s special guests at the 2011 Anniversary Celebration will be NCLR clients Desiree “Dez” Shelton and Sarah Lindstrom, out high school lesbians, who successfully challenged their Minnesota school district in January 2011 so they could walk together as part of the royal court of their school’s winter formal.

“Each and every one of these individuals is a hero,” said NCLR Executive Director Kate Kendell. “Their willingness and determination to standup for their beliefs have not only changed history, but will continue to improve the lives of thousands of LGBT people across the country for years to come—making them victors in our movement for equality and justice, and role models for each one of us.”

Founded in 1977, NCLR is a national legal organization devoted to advancing LGBT justice and equality through litigation, public policy, and public education. Since its start, NCLR—which helps more than 5,000 people each year—has embraced every aspect of the diverse LGBT community through its work, recognizing that the community comes from many different backgrounds and faces a wide range of issues.

The Anniversary Celebration is NCLR’s annual signature event that draws a sell-out crowd. Festivities begin at 8 p.m., with the well-known political humorist Kate Clinton returning for a command performance as emcee.

Kemp case, ruling that Sondra Shineovich consented to the artificial insemination of her former domestic partner, Sarah Kemp, resulting in the pregnancies and birth of two children and that the two intended to raise the children as co-parents.

The ruling noted that the evidence showed much weight that Shinovich had contributed with her “actions, emotions and money.” and that the two had a partnership intending to raise the children together.

Ms. Shineovich had previously failed at trial court level to win her right to the acknowledgment that she is the legal parent of the children, carried by Ms. Kemp. She took her case to the Oregon Court of Appeals, which sided with her, in July 2009, declared ORS. 109.243 unconstitutionally discriminatory on the basis of gender and sexual orientation.

Homophobia is traumatic for the victim – whenever and wherever perpetuated and suffered, and so often result in serious trauma and the reaction where a victim in order to survive – leaves the place of confrontation – maybe even for lands afar.

A lesbian police officer who suffered homophobic abuse from her sergeant has won her sex discrimination claim. Pc Tracey West was regularly taunted by Sgt Michael Service, who claimed gay officers were “poofs” and “freaks”.

Pc West was so traumatized by her six-month ordeal that she resigned from Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary and emigrated to Australia. The 42-year-old had sued the force and Sgt Service for discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation.

She won her case after an employment tribunal in Glasgow ruled she was subjected to a relentless series of homophobic conduct. Sgt Service has been ordered to pay Pc West £7,500, while her former employers must pay £2,500. A hearing in Glasgow was told the abuse started in early 2007 at the force headquarters in Dumfries.

Sgt Service first made a remark to Pc West that he would pass paperwork over the “dyke” to her at the office they shared. Pc West later joined the Gay Police Association, and Sgt Service claimed members of the group were all “poofs” and “freaks”. Sgt Service also told her that one of her own parents must be gay.

(San Francisco, CA, March 31, 2011)— A groundbreaking report released today by the Institute of Medicine urges medical researchers to include the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities in health studies to gain a better understanding of their lives and unique health care needs at different stages of life.

Authored by leading experts on LGBT health, “The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People: Building a Foundation for Understanding” concludes that the lack of sufficient health care data about LGBT people has resulted in an incomplete picture of the community’s overall health needs. The report is the first to comprehensively analyze the LGBT community’s health needs, providing a thorough compilation of existing data, and providing researchers with guidance about how to effectively continue to collect LGBT health data to fill in critical gaps.

One of the report authors, Family Acceptance Project Director Dr. Caitlin Ryan, a leading researcher on LGBT youth, has worked closely over the years with the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Equality California. She is a member of Equality California Institute’s LGBT Health and Human Services Network, and has been a vital part of the Network’s statewide efforts.

In discussing the report, Dr. Ryan said: “This report provides a roadmap for addressing the unmet health needs of LGBT people from childhood through later years. It legitimizes LGBT health research for the scientific community and academic institutions, and will change the way that LGBT health issues are talked about, taught about, studied and addressed in practice. It’s the key to open institutional closet doors to reduce serious health disparities and to promote the well-being of LGBT people.”

Said National Center for Lesbian Rights Executive Director Kate Kendell: “This groundbreaking report documents the urgent need for researchers to include LGBT people in all aspects of health care research. Without this data, our community will continue to face obstacles accessing health care and will continue to be under-served.”

In California, Senator Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego) has introduced the Survey Data Inclusion Act (SB 416), sponsored by Equality California, which would require the state to add questions about sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, domestic partnership status and the gender of a spouse as part of the voluntary demographics sections in California’s government surveys. Such data is already collected for other groups.

“We call on the California Health and Human Services Department to strengthen its efforts to eliminate health disparities for LGBT communities, and we applaud Senator Kehoe and the Institute of Medicine for their leadership in recognizing that investment in LGBT health is a crucial part of ensuring that LGBT people and families can contribute fully to our state’s future,” said Equality California Interim Executive Director Jim Carroll. “In a time of highly limited resources it is paramount that decision makers have relevant data to allocate those resources to achieve the greatest good. The lack of data about LGBT people and families continues to have a detrimental impact on the health of millions of people, particularly our most vulnerable community members whose unique health needs are invisible and literally uncounted in the state systems of care.”

Equality California Institute has launched a variety of initiatives to address LGBT community health needs, including the LGBT Health and Human Services Network, which focuses on LGBT inclusive health data and the Reducing Disparities Project, to assess the mental wellness needs of LGBT communities across the state.

While the issue of leadership and expectations – such as the ANC recall of ambassador Jon Qwelane from Uganda, sleeps in the shadow of what many in SA refer to as “bigger fish to fry” as Ambassador to Africa of MEUSA, I have included in my speaking, the fact that South Africans must start to realize the depth of their constitutional rights and the freedom it exudes; and that without voicing the respect its people expect, the Zuma administration will believe it has license to continue to support Museveni with AID and investment. We have yet to see a single African from the ANC stand up and say homosexuality must be decriminalized in Africa and because the SA Constitution includes sexual orientation and for many other reasons, that expression and enforcement must come from a South African Minister or President.

Unless the South African gay, lesbian , LGBTQI community fight for these rights and expectations for the rest of Africa, they are in effect undermining their own protections, because the more their neighbors punish their citizens for being gay, the more at risk their own SA rights become.

So here s a start in the reporting main stream here in SA and in addition I hear my quote was carried on SABC TV note South African spelling)

“The annual Cape Town Gay Pride Parade kicked off with colourful floats and ritzy dress today where rainbows of resplendent colour, music and festive cheer were what characterised the pride.

Organisers want gay rights better protected. Festival Director Gareth Dallas says: “We are here to celebrate our queerness our beautifulness our trans gender folk, our inter sex folk. But also to put a little bit of a spot light on issues such as corrective rape in South Africa and how wrong that is and why it needs to change.”

There were also calls for South Africa to distance itself from Uganda because of its anti gay stance. Gay Rights activist Melanie Nathan says: “How can South Africa welcome Museveni (Ugandan president) in this country, and thank him, and then go and invest in Uganda when they are killing and wanting to kill gay, lesbian, bisexual people, trans gender too.”

Editors – Feb 13-2011

Gay Pride South Africa has invited Melanie Nathan of LGR to speak in Cape Town as Keynote at their PINK Gala and British Airways is sponsoring her flight. Thank you BA. Mel will also participate as a delegate presenting reforms to the Minster of Justice for victims of corrective rape and sentences.

In 2009 Mel was contacted by Luleke Sizwe – to publish photos of brutally raped Milli Gaika. Melanie reported the entire journey of Ndumie Funda, founder of Luleki Sizwe and Milli Gaika – engendering international attention and donations to provide a safe house for victims left homeless after attacks.

From that moment Melanie never let go of the story until it built into an international outcry.

Over 1 million signatures supporting the petition for corrective rape reform have been collected worldwide, also calling for the harshest sentences to perpetrators of corrective rape and that government acknowledges the existence of corrective rape which, it says the government seems to deny at present.

“We will meet with Luleki Sizwe to discuss the matter. I called them last week to enquire about the logistical aspects of this meeting. They indicated that they would like the meeting to take place in Cape Town. In all likelihood the meeting will take place in Cape Town”, Tlali Tlali spokesperson for the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development said.

Melanie will be there!

All advocacy and writing for LezGetReal has been pro bono for 2 years. Melanie Has done extraordinary work on behalf of many in need, with no pay or reward. Now she wants to see two such projects through completion.

1. The corrective Rape story of Mllicent Gaika and now the trial of accused Andile – where mainstream may fail to report – and justice may be eluded without international press presence – and who better than Mel who brought international attention and funds to the victims with almost two years of consistent coverage.
2. After LGR reporting went viral, Change.org linked to Mel’s articles and used some of her draft reforms to solicit 1 million e-mails which landed on the Minister of Justice;s desk in South Africa, resulting in an invitation to the Groups to attend a meeting for reforms. Melanie would like to attend.

“I have reported on this case since the brutal rape which sparked my advocacy. SO to do the trip I need to raise a further $8,000 – we can do this via sponsorship on Lezgetreal and/on Swirl Radio/ or as a non profit donation / or as a loan against future fundraising. If any interest or advise – please let me know. All Mel’s advocacy work has been pro bono.”

She will travel to SA on Feb 27th and to do so must raise $7,500.

The victims of the rapes really want Mel there – please help us make it happen…..

Today the group – an imperative resource for LGBT refugees, is reaching out to the Bay Area for help, with an urgent call to for housing for a Gay Ugandan Refugee. The young man (approximately late 20′s-30′s) has fled Uganda and is being legally directed to San Francisco, where he will receive assistance from ORAM and some financial support from the US Government. He will be seeking employment as soon as he arrives. He will have a stipend and medical coverage – the most difficult to arrange is a place to stay.

I decided to write this appeal because I know that amongst our San Francisco, Bay Area community are the kindest and most generous people who may well understand the hardship of non acceptance and prejudice. We have all felt the pain; imagine living in a country where being homosexual is considered a crime.

Proudly San Francisco will host this unique International program, designed to help LGBTQI refugees; it is small but its a start. The vision of the international team, ORAM, is filling a much needed gap in social justice and services, by starting this pilot program. As a community we ought to support their endeavors and go all out to make the pilot a viable program. I am hoping that my readers will contact ORAM and ask how they can help our young Ugandan brother to settle in with a smooth transition. Perhaps we can offer to host him – with events in his honor – as well as provide accommodation and other needs for his comfort.

What is most critical is housing for him and ORAM must find affordable accommodation in a matter of a few weeks. This is the letter that ORAM has sent out:

Dear ORAM supporter,

Do you live in the San Francisco Bay Area? ORAM – Organization for Refuge, Asylum and Migration has begun its flagship resettlement program, helping vulnerable LGBTI refugees rebuild their lives in the San Francisco area. Our first refugee, a Ugandan, is due to arrive in a few weeks and we are looking for volunteers to assist with many aspects of his resettlement. Further information is available on our website.

We are especially looking for low cost, affordable housing. Can you help? We need LGBTI and refugee-friendly accommodation that is affordable on the small allowance offered by the US government. You may know someone who has a room to rent for a small amount, or even have space in your home. Our refugee is scheduled to arrive in February or March.

We would love to hear from you. Please email us at info@oraminternational.org with any thoughts or suggestions.

If you yourself are unable to help, please send this message further to friends and colleagues. Together, we can create a safe landing for our refugee.

If you have received this email in error, or would no longer like to receive mailings from ORAM, please let us know by replying to this email with the word ‘unsubscribe.’

Kind regards,
The team at ORAM

Melanie Nathan – 12-04-2010. From Marin County California, -The largest wildfire in Israel’s history is raging on the Carmel mountain range south of Haifa in northern Israel. A national disaster has been declared, as more than forty lives have been lost, and many more are in danger Israel’s Fire and Rescue Services and JNF-KKL foresters battle the blaze. Starting in the Muhraka area of the Carmel hills on Thursday morning, December 2, the fire quickly spread, threatening communities and forcing the evacuation of more than 17,000 residents, including the campus of Haifa University. At least 20% of the Carmel forest reportedly is affected as the fire continues to burn. The Israel Foreign Ministry is in contact with the United States government and countries from around the world regarding assistance in extinguishing the blaze. A number of nations have sent fire-fighting aircraft as well as equipment and supplies to help control the flames.

Statement from Israel’s Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren:

The State of Israel is facing a fire of unprecedented magnitude. We mourn the tragic loss of life and deeply regret the devastation to communities, wildlife, and forests.

The People of Israel have been profoundly moved by the outpouring of support from a number of foreign countries, including many in our region. We are especially grateful to President Barack Obama for his expression of support. “That’s what friends do for each other,” he said last night, and he personally assured me that the administration would do its utmost to aid Israel swiftly in its hour of need.

We are ready to begin the task of rebuilding – restoring the damaged communities, replenishing the wildlife, and planting new forests.

The State of Israel has surmounted many challenges in its short history. Together with our friends worldwide, we will overcome this too.

“That we have no suffered additional losses is thanks to the police personnel, the firefighters, the soldiers, the pilots, the MDA personnel, the local council workers, the many volunteers and the citizens of Israel. The Israeli people know how to come together. The State of Israel knows how to come together and unite in moments of crisis and this is happening here very well.” (full statement)

“I want to begin by offering our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of all of those who’ve died as a result of the terrible forest fire in northern Israel.

“As rescuers and firefighters continue in their work, the United States is acting to help our Israeli friends respond to the disaster. A short while ago, our ambassador in Tel Aviv, Jim Cunningham, issued a disaster declaration, which has launched an effort across the U.S. government to identify the firefighting assistance we have available and provide it to Israel as quickly as possible. Of course, that’s what friends do for each other.

“And, Mr. Ambassador, our thoughts and prayers are with everybody in Israel who is affected by this tragedy and the family and loved ones of those in harm’s way.”

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Remarks (link)
On behalf of the people of the United States, I offer my sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives in the fires in northern Israel. The people of the United States know all too well the devastation caused by wildfires, and we are fully committed to assisting Israel during this tragedy.

Our Ambassador to Israel, James Cunningham, has already issued a disaster declaration, prompting significant coordination within the United States government to identify and provide Israel with firefighting assistance. We are moving as quickly as we can to provide this assistance, and are heartened by similar efforts to contribute resources from Israel’s other friends around the world. My hope is that the fires are extinguished soon. The hearts of the people of the United States go out to the people of Israel, and we stand with them at this difficult time.

MELANIE NATHAN -San Francisco, CA, December 3, 2010 —Today, Equality California Executive Director Geoff Kors announced that he will step down from his position on March 31, 2011, after nine years with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality organization that he shaped into one of the most effective political advocacy organizations in the country.

Under his leadership, Equality California was able to work with the dedicated pro-equality members of the California Legislature to achieve countless victories, including: helping enact 71 pieces of pro-LGBT legislation, more than any other organization of its kind in the country; helping pass comprehensive domestic partnership legislation for the first time in the nation without a court order; and helping pass marriage equality bills twice that would have allowed same-sex couples to marry.

Kors was also instrumental in successfully fighting to achieve the broadest protections for transgender people in the nation, including laws that prohibit discrimination based on gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodations, and making California the first state to prohibit discrimination in insurance based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

EQCA is like a well oiled machine – in Sacramento; and I can speak first hand. The organization effected the passage of the Resolution in support of The Uniting American Families ACT – out of the California Legislature – which served as a directive to the US Congress that California stands by the rights of same-sex couples to sponsor partners and spouses for immigration. While Cities have passed similar Resolutions, while no other State Legislative body have come forth in the same way. Having given testimony to both Assembly and Senate Committees – I bore witness to the extraordinary amount of work and dedication on the part of EQCA staff. That and the professionalism and of course the ultimate successes speak volumes for his leadership.

Equality California experienced significant growth during Kors’ tenure. When Kors joined Equality California in 2002, there were just two staffers without a single office, just 50,000 members and a minimal budget. The organization now has offices across the state and 20 staff members working for equality. Membership has grown to more than 700,000 today, and in 2010, Equality California has raised $6 million so far with more than $1.5 million in net assets.

The boards of Equality California and Equality California Institute have grown to 50 members, including such notable leaders as Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America; Shannon Minter, Legal Director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights; Katherine Spillar, the Executive Vice President of the Feminist Majority Foundation and Feminist Majority and Stuart Milk, longtime LGBT advocate and nephew of Harvey Milk.

“It has been a true honor and privilege to serve as Executive Director of Equality California and to work with California’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community,” Kors said. “I am incredibly grateful to the elected officials, coalition partners, dedicated staff, board and especially to our members who have done so much to advance equality here in California. I am committed to working with the Board to ensure a smooth transition so that the organization can continue to thrive and achieve our mission.

A statement by NCLR Executive Director Kate Kendell:

“By any objective measure, Geoff is the most accomplished political strategist and legislative advocate in our movement, and he has created a blueprint for other states to follow for how to win equality that will continue to benefit our community for years to come. That is his legacy to the LGBT movement.

He has been ruthless in expecting and requiring from our political representatives a commitment to full equality, including marriage, and he allowed elected officials seeking endorsement from Equality California no wiggle room. He went farther on this principle than anyone I have ever seen. His insistence on demanding a full commitment enabled us to move much faster than almost any other state, and it earned Equality California enormous respect, from both the community and elected officials who saw that when they stood up for us, Equality California had their back. California made the gains that it has in the past nine years largely due to Geoff’s leadership, hard work, and collaboration with other organizations and elected officials.

It’s hard to imagine anyone filling his shoes. We are going to face some tough fights: schools and curriculum; issues affecting LGBT folks in prison; the gap between the experience of rural and urban LGBT Californians; and the ongoing work of building effective coalitions around race, class, and other social justice issues. Equality California will need another strong, determined, and strategic leader. I trust they will find the right person, but it won’t be easy to find someone who can follow Geoff’s impressive example.”

Melanie Nathan; Nov 30-2010 ; UPDATED: See Live Blog Below CIVIL UNIONS LEGISLATION PASSES IN ILLINOIS THE CIVIL RIGHTS AGENDA & LGBT CHANGE MOVE FORWARD WITH MARRIAGE EQUALITY IN ILLINOIS Springfield, Illinois – Tuesday, November 30, 2010 -

Today, the Illinois House of Representatives voted to pass the Illinois Religious Freedom and Civil Union Act by a vote of 61 to 52. With this vote, the Illinois General Assembly has taken one more step towards equality in Illinois. “Today the Illinois House of Representatives made history,” stated Anthony Martinez, Executive Director of The Civil Rights Agenda and Co-Executive Director of LGBT Change. “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) families in Illinois have gained desperately needed protections that surround the most personal times of our lives. With this victory.

The major benefits include hospital visitation, healthcare decision making, disposition of a deceased loved one’s remains and probate rights. Civil unions would be available to any couple, same-sex or opposite-sex, in a committed relationship who are: 18 years of age or older, not in an existing marriage or civil union, and are not related. The Act will also provide for the dissolution of civil unions in the same way as divorce. This Act will take effect July 2011.

“We are finally on the bus,” said Jacob Meister, President of The Civil Rights Agenda.

LIVE BLOG EXUDES EMOTION

LIVE BLOG – Emotional debate by Representatives in tears when debating the issue of Civil Unions in the Illinois State legislature. Rep Feigenholt spoke of constituents, Larry lost Ray and could not get into the hospital room to say goodbye. Close your eyes and imagine if you could not say goodbye to the one you love- how could you not vote for this presentation. Rep Burns, grew up an outside, straight man and happily married. I was not black enough for some and too black for others. Rep Harris told me to speak from the heart. I will always stand up for those who were left out, who are treated unfairly anything that diminishes a fellow human being diminishes me. I stand up because it is a mater of civil rights for same sex couples

Dunkin – Fully supports it the right thing to do; Rep Gordon Government has no biz imposing people’s religious beliefs on others especially when it denies civil rights. Helps reinforce love and commitment. This uplifts marriage said Rep Lang , because it speaks of respect. There is nothing in the Bill that takes anything away from anyone. Not about marriage but it is about commitment and respect for people of Illinois. Naomi Jacobson is in support many constituents want me for years to vote for this. I have constituents who are gay and lesbian have families children. Wonderful families deserve rights and to make decisions like any other family. My own daughter came out. It was when she came out that I grew stronger in my commitment – she is a grown up in a relationship. Her life partner should be able to make decisions when she needs her to. I am honored to be able to urge an yes vote.

ANTI Argument REIS says No because he says it will lead to gay marriage.

Some idiots whose name I did not get says how long do they have to be together to do this? Harris then said well how long did you and your wife have to wait?

Governor of Illinois -

Rep Black – Some wish this issue would go away. But it will not. I am in my seventh decade. Look at Oklahoma City bombing that is what hatred does. This should not be a partisan issue.

REP HARRIS who introduced the Bill was extremely emotional – Thousand of People who have done this work it is not me. Thousands of parents want their children treated with same dignity and respect as their straight child. Want Safety, love and to have justice under the law. It is their work, it is my privilege to have introduced this here today. This is a great country and great because we have worked not to tear down but to build up,. We have worked to bring people together. Please take one more remarkable step for our State and Justice.

…… watch or listen for yourself here…. http://www.ilga.gov/house/audvid.asp

HEAR Applause and Jubilant Audience….

What is so meaningful for me as an activist is the extraordinary amount of work that Rep Harris and all the IL Activists and supporters did to accomplish this milestone. Although we are still discriminated against in IL because of no Tax benefits afforded and other aspects that marriage provides – it is a step forward – YET even more significant from my perspective is the standing record of what the representatives had to say, their emotion and the validation of our suffering and second class citizenry in their words. These words should be played over and over again ……

Illinois House Passes Civil Union Bill, Lambda Legal Celebrates and Urges Senate To Follow: Protect Same-sex Couples and Their Families

“We thank the Illinois House for passing this historic bill. We are one step closer to bringing much needed protections to same-sex couples and their families.”

(Chicago, IL, November 30, 2010) – The Illinois House of Representatives passed the civil union bill today, taking an important step toward providing needed legal protections for same-sex couples. Lambda Legal is celebrating this vote and urging the Illinois Senate to follow.

“We thank the Illinois House for passing this historic bill,” said Jim Bennett, Regional Director of Lambda Legal’s Midwest Regional Office in Chicago. “We are one step closer to bringing much needed protections to same-sex couples and their families. We now urge the Senate to vote for civil unions in Illinois.”

Passed by a vote of 61-52 in the Illinois House, Lambda Legal congratulates and thanks the bill’s sponsor in the House, Representative Greg Harris, along with Representatives Feigenholtz, Currie, Fritchey, Howard Osterman and Mell. To become law, the bill needs at least 30 votes in the Senate and the Governor’s signature.

The Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Unions Act would better protect the state’s committed same-sex couples and their families by providing a range of legal protections including hospital visitation and health care decision making rights. Presently, Illinois law does not recognize same-sex couples, leaving them and their children vulnerable.

In the United States, many jurisdictions provide some form of relationship recognition for same-sex couples either through marriage, civil union or domestic partnership laws. Same-sex couples can marry in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Washington D.C. and next door in Iowa. Other states provide same-sex couples with legal rights through civil unions or domestic partnership laws.

An October 2010 poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute of likely Illinois voters shows 67.5% approve of civil unions or marriage for same-sex couples. An August 2010 Newsweek poll shows that nationally, 55% support civil unions, showing a 15% increase since 2004.

“Passage of civil unions is urgent,” said Chicago resident Angelica Lopez. “My partner and my daughter deserve legal recognition as my immediate family, and this cannot wait any longer.”

Melanie Nathan- No v 29-2010 - New Media Organizer, Courage Campaign has provided this announcement to LezGetReal – Over the past few weeks, we’ve stepped up our efforts to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” partnering with Rep. Patrick Murphy, VoteVets.org, our friends at SLDN, reaching out to empower veterans to speak in support of lifting the ban on lesbian and gay Americans serving openly in our armed forces.

Today, Courage is proud to be partnering with OutServe, an underground network of more than 1,200 active-duty gay and lesbian members of the military, in launching the latest iteration of the Testimony website to amplify the voices of veterans and active duty service members, both gay and straight, calling on Congress to end DADT.

Please read the following message from OutServe member Jd Smith on the power of these stories to change hearts and minds, and to move Congress to action. Then visit our Testimony website to watch the videos and share these stories with your friends.

In the last few weeks, 69,360 Americans — including 12,462 veterans and their families — have signed Rep. Patrick Murphy’s Courage Campaign petition to Senate leaders. We followed that up by launching an advertising campaign on military web sites sending John McCain and Republicans a message that veterans and their families support the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

On Tuesday, the long-awaited Pentagon survey of active-duty servicemembers will be released, followed by Senate hearings on Thursday and Friday featuring testimony from military leadership. That’s why we’re bringing you this important message from Jd Smith (name anonymized), an active-duty servicemember who recently helped launch OutServe, an underground network of more than 1,200 active-duty gay and lesbian members of the military. Please read his compelling story below.

Rick Jacobs
Chair, Courage Campaign

Dear Friend –

A few months ago, I was blackmailed under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Some people who knew that I was gay — and serving in the military — tried to use it against me to get what they wanted. After years of serving my country, I couldn’t take it any longer.

So I started talking with fellow gay and lesbian servicemembers and we decided to take action. Over the past few months, we’ve organized Outserve — the largest network of active duty gay and lesbian servicemembers ever assembled. Using hidden social media, we are all connected, we can see each other, communicate with each other, and most importantly, support each other.

In the last few months, Outserve has created 27 chapters around the globe, with more than 1,200 members. We are as diverse as the military and our country as a whole. We are among those serving right now in Iraq and Afghanistan. And like all who wear the uniform proudly, we are united by an unflinching commitment to give our lives, if necessary, in service to our country.

Now, with the Senate set to consider repeal of DADT in early December, we — gay and straight veterans alike — are speaking with one voice. We’re in this fight together and, together, we’re going to finally put an end to a failed policy that hurts our military, undermines the trust our troops need on the battlefield, and contradicts the values that generations of veterans have fought and died to defend.

With the support of the Courage Campaign’s “Testimony” project, we have uploaded several videos from both gay and straight veterans and servicemembers sharing their thoughts about “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Will you watch these videos now, share them with your friends and — if you are a veteran — upload a video of your own?

For years, I have served openly as a gay servicemember in the ranks. Most of my straight brothers and sisters in arms have been nothing but supportive. In fact, they are the ones I owe for saving my career under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

When I came under investigation under “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” it was my straight fellow servicemembers who came to my aid. It was my straight colleagues who saved me from being discharged.

While elimination of DADT is supported by President Obama, Defense Secretary Gates, Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen, majorities in both houses of Congress, and 78% of the American people, Senator John McCain has threatened a filibuster. He says he wants to hear from our troops and their families. We are going to make sure he does.

Veterans know that DADT is bad for our military — especially in a time of war — and America needs to hear their stories. Before the Senate begins its deliberations, you can help ensure the politicians hear the truth about this failed policy. Will you watch these videos now, share them with your friends and — if you are a veteran — upload a video of your own?

http://www.couragecampaign.org/Testimony

Thank you for your support. At the end of the day, we are all in this fight together.

Jd Smith

Hey but what about Joe himself- isn’t he a dork anyway? Isn’t President Obama more popular in Alaska than Palin herself? She who absconds mid job for a big buck deserves no mercy but recognition for profanity for it is only the profane that remains profound!

They eye is on Scott McCadams – the sleeper Mayor rises amidst the collapse of Miller and Murkowski hammered inadvertently by Palin who has no clue what the hell she is talking about, be it on her own abandoned turf or not. What a treat the Palin turf gets knocked up by the horse from the back, despite the joke eeeee slamming the Joe Miller donkey with that stick yelling “bastard bastard..”

Melanie Nathan- 10-13-10; nathan@privatecourts.com

Ecuador- More tips have poured in to Lezgetreal regarding the whereabouts of Lisa Miller and the child she kidnapped and fled the US with, late last year.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Lisa Miller abducted Isabelle Miller Jenkins, after losing a long and bitter custody battle. Miller fled the USA , avoiding an arrest warrant, and is presently residing in Quito, Ecuador.

The sad fact of his story is that Miller who became an ex-gay (convert to heterosexuality, after her passionate lesbian relationship with Janet Jenkins that bore the child Isabella) is now being exposed by the very people who sought her so called conversion and who worked to help her escape the rule of law and the various Court orders leading now to her self-imposed exile.

Lezgetreal was informed by a reliable source close to fugitive Miller, that she is still employed by an educational institution and is located in Ecuador, which we have chosen not to name at this time. Although the Globally renowned Missionary group, HCJB has provided a LGR with a statement denying that they have employed Miller or that they have any knowledge of her whereabouts, we have received further information pointing to collusion on the part of several missionary/ church/ ex-gay groups; and with evidence in hand have flushed out Ms. Miller’s whereabouts with acute accuracy. Now it is up to the authorities to turn her over and for MS. Jenkins to be reunited with her daughter.

HCJB Global wrote: “HCJB Global has become aware of a posting on a website called “ http://www.facebook.com/l/2fd18;lezgetreal.com” suggesting that HCJB Global may be supporting or hiding an individual named Lisa Miller, who is alleged to have left the United States in violation of the law. HC…JB Global has confirmed that Lisa Miller is not presently and has never been an employee or volunteer of its ministry in Ecuador or in the United States. HCJB Global further affirms that: (1) it is not hiding Lisa Miller; (2) it has not expended funds to help Lisa Miller evade the law; and (3) it has not engaged others to support or assist Lisa Miller. Any further inquiries may be addressed to Cheri Birkey, Corporate Secretary of HCJB Global at cbirkey@hcjb.org.”

Although Lisa Miller believes she is well hidden, she has been found and it is a matter of time, as even her closest of confidantes have participated in exposing her, whether inadvertently or overtly.

Anyone with information should contact Authorities, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the USA, rather than be complicit in the commission of the abduction of a child.

If Lisa Miller sees this post, I am inviting her to communicate with me to connect her with authorities in the USA that will help effect a lenient and peaceful transition back to the USA. It would be in Miller’s interests to come forward and return Isabella to the USA, as according to sources, it is likely Miller will receive compassion if she turns herself and explains the influence of the ex-gay activists, rather than have the authorities effect what is likely to be an imminent arrest and extradition to the USA.

First-ever survey of LGBT-owned companies and LGBT-friendly corporations yields a trove of findings and a roadmap for increasing LGBT-related business-to-business commerce.

Melanie Nathan- September 29, 2010;-

Complete findings to be presented at the 2010 NGLCC National Business & Leadership Conference, November 18-20 in Washington, D.C.

(San Francisco, CA, September 20, 2010) — A breakthrough survey of over 1,400 LGBT business decision-makers was recently conducted by Community Marketing, Inc. (CMI), an LGBT market research and communications firm based in San Francisco. The report highlights significant opportunities for LGBT-owned firms to grow their business, as well as for large corporations to more easily source LGBT-owned suppliers. The study also showed that the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce® (NGLCC), and local LGBT chambers of commerce have successfully nurtured the growth of LGBT-related business-to-business commerce.

“Sourcing LGBT suppliers used to be like finding a needle in a haystack,” said Irwin Drucker, Program Director, LGBT Supplier Diversity, IBM. “There is no way a large corporation could include LGBT in their supplier diversity program without NGLCC.”

The vast majority (72%) of respondents overall don’t realize major corporations look to buy from LGBT-owned companies, indicating a sizable business development opportunity. By contrast, respondents who are NGLCC members are nearly three times more likely than nonmembers (70% vs 24%) to know that major companies buy from certified LGBT-owned firms, underscoring one of the most beneficial aspects of membership in NGLCC and local LGBT chambers of commerce.

“Through our involvement in the NGLCC, we’ve been able to connect with LGBT business decision makers, thus growing exponentially in the past several years: quadrupling from two to eight employees and at least doubling our revenue,” said Alan “Chip” Green, Jr., Managing Partner of gay-owned Green Ink Marketing Communications. “We are now a more robust global supplier.”

Business-related commerce among LGBT-owned companies and LGBT-friendly corporations had never been studied prior to this research. “LGBT marketing is almost entirely consumer-focused,” said Thomas Roth, President of Community Marketing, Inc. (CMI). “This study indicates a viable opportunity in the ‘LGBT B2B’ segment that is often ignored.” CMI conducted this first-of-its-kind online survey of over 1,400 U.S.-based respondents in partnership with NGLCC. The study was supported by Hyatt Hotels, Chubb Group of Insurance Companies and Wells Fargo Bank. The goal of the study was to quantify and qualify the purchasing habits, motivations, and behaviors of LGBT-owned companies and LGBT-friendly corporations, and determine opportunities for increasing LGBT-related B2B commerce.

Respondents were drawn from a “business owner/manager” segment of CMI’s proprietary research panel of 50,000 LGBT consumers, NGLCC national members, and affiliated LGBT chambers of commerce members.

Complete results will be presented at the 2010 NGLCC National Business & Leadership Conference [http://www.nglcc.org/DC2010], November 18-20 in Washington, D.C. After the conference, the report will be available for free download from the Community Marketing and NGLCC websites.
“Everything old is new again. Do you remember 1985? Were you not even born yet? No matter where you were 25 years ago, next week you’ll want to see the piece of celluloid queer history that is Choosing Children.

Choosing Children is a 1985 documentary that tells the story about a choice that a growing number of lesbians and gay men were making at the time: to become parents after having coming out. Beginning in the early 1980s, lesbians, often in biological partnership with gay men, began choosing to have children as lesbian-identified parents, testing society’s perceptions of family, challenging family laws that had yet to incorporate LGBT people, and becoming pioneers in our movement for equality.

The legal advances we have made for our families since then are nothing short of breathtaking. Choosing Children poignantly captures our history and illustrates these early families’ contributions to today’s LGBT family rights victories, including the recent Proposition 8 decision by Judge Vaughn Walker in California. As Judge Walker wrote:

“The sexual orientation of an individual does not determine whether that individual can be a good parent. Children raised by gay or lesbian parents are as likely as children raised by heterosexual parents to be healthy, successful and well-adjusted.”

The 2010 election will determine who will lead California State and represent our LGBT interests in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. during the next several years. “With so many critical issues facing our community, it is imperative that we elect candidates who support full and complete equality for LGBT Californians,” Says Geoff Kors, Executive Director of Equality California.

The June primary election is just over a month away and absentee ballots are about to hit mailboxes. With low turn-out expected, it is important that our community turns out to vote. EQCA is holding phone banks around the state targeting key legislative and judicial races. Please volunteer at the phone bank closest to you.
