She did say that the reason why she and her wife were pregnant at the same time largely had to do with things like sharing breast feeding duties. For the most part, Gilbert held back in the conversation, which the author over at Mombian felt was a bit disappointing, but it did give the two straight co-hosts Leah Remini and Sharon Osbourne a chance to ask questions which, in all honesty, are usually the kinds of questions that many straight women would normally ask including the downside to being in a two-woman relationship.

At one point, while discussing having convergent periods, Cora mentioned the fact that it is not so much “who’s gonna be the bitch” so much as “who’s going to be the butch”. Cora also mentioned the fact that, despite the fact that it might seem better in a lesbian relationship, the reality is that it is as complex as any other relationship out there.

Iron Chef Cat Cora opened up to People magazine about how her partner and her children went about having their four children. Cat and her partner, Jennifer, used the same sperm donor, fertilized eggs in vitro and then got the other one’s egg implanted in her womb. They also have another child who they aren’t sure which one is the ‘biological’ mom. Which is fine with them for now. There is also one more kid in there, but I can’t keep track. Four is too many for me. I think they are all boys too, which must keep Cat and Jennifer really busy. On a more serious note, Cat also describes how painful the IVF process was; especially when she suffered a miscarriage:

The “shots and shifting hormones” of IVF proved challenging for both women, and Cora reveals she even suffered a miscarriage along the way. “The first three days of the pregnancy were euphoric … This little embryo was growing,” she recalls. “Then I lost the baby. I cried for a week.”

Starting over from scratch “was devastating” and “traumatizing,” but Cora says it ultimately gave her a perspective she wouldn’t have otherwise had. “I honestly think it’s a good thing I got pregnant on the second try.”

So sad. But luckily, Cat was able to get pregnant again. Cat also says that four is the perfect amount of children for her and Jennifer:

“We knew we wanted to have four kids,” Cora explains, “She didn’t want to wait, and she got pregnant quickly. After she did, we decided I shouldn’t wait … It would be easier to raise two young babies together, almost as twins. Jennifer could breastfeed for me when I was on the road.”

She even admits that it was a rocky road for the two mothers in terms of their relationship, when Cat went back to work four weeks after their two sons were born. Thankfully, the two were able to salvage their relationship and keep their loving family intact.

Cat also throws in a political point, when she makes sure that People knows how difficult it is for LGBT couples to ensure that both parents are legally considered to be parents.

“As a same-sex couple, we had to go back and legally adopt them,” she points out. “Even though Nash was her biological son, Jennifer had to adopt him. Same with me and Caje.”

Adding that “there were lots of papers to file and lots of legal expenses,” Cora feels it’s a process that needs to be simplified. “Hopefully someday same-sex couples won’t have to go through all of that,” she adds.

I think it’s great that Cat Cora is opening up to People about what lesbian mom’s go through and how they feel about the process. She doesn’t have to put her life out there and use it to educate people, but she is. I, as a potential future lesbian mom, really appreciate that. Especially since the Southern Chef is loved by people who wouldn’t generally be exposed to the real side of LGBT family life. So go on with your bad self, Cat!

After the “Sham Prom” debacle in Mississippi, where the Itawamba School District discriminated against and then duped out lesbian, 18 year old Constance McMillen, celebrities are banding together to try and rectify the situation. The Advocate is reporting that out lesbian chef, Cat Cora, Lance Bass and Green Day will sponsor an LGBT friendly prom in Mississippi. The Advocate reports:

The Tupelo, Miss. event, scheduled for May 8, is being organized by the Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition and is open to all students, regardless of sexual orientation. The group’s spokesman, Matthew Sheffield, told the Associated Press that Bass will be in attendance.

The parents of a gay teenager have sued his Ohio high school, claiming that constant bullying there drove him to suicide, 365Gay.com reports. According to court papers, 17-year-old Eric Mohat was subjected to relentless name-calling, teasing and physical abuse in class and in the school’s hallways.

Details sketchy in beatings of gay men in Broward

David Villanova Jr., 27, and Craig Cohen, 47, were beaten in separate attacks early Monday morning by the same group of men, according to BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella. Cohen, of Oakland Park, remains unconscious at Broward General Medical Center. Villanova Jr., of Pompano Beach, suffered a skull fracture but was awake Wednesday afternoon and speaking with detectives. Moschella said Wednesday that the same group of robbers attacked both men at separate times. Moschella said detectives are treating the two attacks as robberies, but have not ruled out the possibility that the beatings were hate crimes.

Rupert Everett Trashes Gay Fatherhood

Actor Rupert Everett trashed the idea of gay men wanting to father their own children, charging that it’s the outgrowth of a “tiresome” gay rights movement populated by “awful middle-class queens.” “I think this surrogacy thing is crap,” Everett, 49, told the Daily Beast website. “It is utterly hideous. I think it’s egocentric and vain.” The openly gay star of films including My Best Friend’s Wedding and Shrek the Third extended his attack to lesbians. “I mean, if you are meant to have babies, then great,” he said. “But this whole idea of two gay guys filling a cocktail shaker with their sperm and impregnating some grim lesbian and then it gets cut out is just really weird.”

Paterson to introduce same-sex marriage bill

Gov. David Paterson said today he plans to re-introduce legislation to make same-sex marriages legal in New York. The legislation is expected to mirror a gay-marriage bill introduced in 2007 by former Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who — with Paterson as his running mate — campaigned in 2006 on a platform that included marriage equality. “We’ll put a bill out and let the people decide one way or the other,” Paterson said this morning on WHCU-AM (870) in Ithaca.

Woman’s Bid to Assert Same-Sex Parental Rights Fails

A woman whose same-sex partner gave birth to a child does not have standing to assert parental rights after the couple broke up, a New York state appeals panel ruled Thursday. The ruling reversed a decision ordering a hearing to determine if the woman’s relationship with the 5-year-old boy was tantamount to that of a parent. The panel held that Domestic Relations Law §70 is limited to “biological and adoptive parents,” even though a party “may have developed a long-standing, loving and nurturing relationship with the child.”
