CT Fertility, an organization with clinics in New York and Connecticut, has made an unusual request of its patients. There are 3,500 frozen embryos in their care, and they have sent a letter to hundreds of their patients suggesting that it would be a marvelous gesture this holiday season to offer to donate an embryo to prospective parents who cannot for whatever reason create one of their own.

Embryo adoption is an affordable and safe option for people who desperately want a child but can’t manage the costs of creating the embryo or don’t have viable sperm or eggs with which to create one.

When Neil Patrick Harris announced the birth of his twins, there was a woman on the Yahoo News comment stream who was very upset that becoming a parent had been so easy for Harris. For this woman, the hurdle was money. She and her husband could not afford to adopt to go through the process of in vitro or surrogacy. It is one of the cruelties of life that people who truly want to be parents often have the hardest time, though physical problems or lack of money to overcome those physical problems. What CT Fertility is suggesting is taking the costliest part of the pre-pregnancy part of artificial assistance for birth out of the equation for those who can’t afford the price tag.

CT Fertility’s web page features a special portal for same sex couples. The company has been around for two decades and is highly reputable. This isn’t some kind of scam. This is a wonderful humanitarian effort to assist those who want to be parents, and because it is being done through such a reputable agency, there will be safeguards against two people from the same embryo set meeting thirty years from now and getting married – the biggest fear with taking embryos out of the control of the originating parents.

There are lots of awards for doing good for the people of the world, but this idea is really outside the usual range of humanitarian work. That’s a pity, because CT Fertility deserves a lot of recognition for this wonderful idea, and any of their patients who agree to having their excess embryos adopted deserve sainthood.

It should be noted that life is in every cell of a person’s body, so cutting yourself or having surgery could be considered genocide since it often involves the killing of hundreds of thousands of billions of living cells. Attorney General Mike DeWine had previously rejected the amendment summary because it “contained wording the amendment would not affect, such as birth control.”

The group’s spokesman said that the amendment’s phrasing has been changed to specify that it would not affect contraception or in vitro fertilization. The group submitted the new phrasing along with the needed 1000 valid signatures. This is the first step towards getting the 385,000 signatures they need for the amendment to appear on the 2012 ballot.

It should be noted that an amendment like this did not pass a vote in Mississippi.

Silvia Garcia, 30, does not currently have a partner but is eager to have a child of her own. However, she was told by the head of the fertility branch at her local hospital in Asturias that he was under orders from the regional ministry to refuse to attend to unmarried heterosexual women or lesbians.

A similar decision was made in the same region concerning another unmarried lesbian who wanted to become a mother. They were more or less told that unless they had a sterile male as a partner, they did not qualify and would have to pay for private fertility treatment, says Garcia.

Spain’s health minister, Leire Pajin, denied that this could be the case as she said the national care system does not discriminate on the grounds of sexual orientation . But Garcia said the consultant specifically told her that lesbians were not entitled to treatment. That word did not have to come up she concludes.

She says the other lesbian in her situation, Andrea Munoz, believed that it was a way of using sexual orientation to exclude some patients, in order to save money. Garcia is currently pursuing legal action.’

The sperm for the quintuplets came from the same US donor that the two used previously for the conception of their first child. Last year, Nolan, who is twenty-one, gave birth to Lilly. Keevers, who is twenty-seven, is the one pregnant this time. She said “It took me a long time to get my head round what was happening, but now I’ve come to terms with it, I’m excited.”

Keevers and Nolan have been together for two years, and met when Nolan was on vacation in Australia from Ireland. Her father, apparently, despaired of ever having grandchildren. She said “So I proved him wrong. Two ladies and six babies.” The couple lives in Brisbane, and have supportive family in both Australia and Ireland. Nolan has also said “People don’t know whether to congratulate us or commiserate, but we think it’s a miracle and couldn’t be happier.”

The couple found the biological father through an internet site in the US and he will never see the children and has signed away any rights to them.

They have been given a grant from Fertility SOURCE Companies, which is one of the most comprehensive egg donor and surrogacy programs in the nation. The two are partnering together to provide a one stop location for patients looking for donor egg cycles.

The AFA has created a comprehensive fact sheet complete with an informational video on transitioning from In vitro Fertilization to donor egg IVF cycle. The fact sheet is suppose to help lessen the burden on patients by providing medical, psychological support and legal information on the aspects that come with choosing an egg donor.

Susan Bloom, Director of Donor Recruitment for The Fertility SOURCE Companies, “The educational information included in this video and fact sheet is invaluable to our intended parents transitioning from a traditional IVF cycle to an egg donor. The best ammunition we can give our intended parents is knowledge and education about the process they are about to undertake, along with the resources to have all their medical and legal questions answered. At Fertility SOURCE Companies, we pride ourselves in the guidance we give our intended parents every step of the way, from matching them with a donor to their IVF transfer.”

Ken Mosesian, Executive Director for the AFA “Because of the generous support of Fertility SOURCE Companies, The AFA is able to continue to provide first-rate education for infertility patients. The family-building journey has many inherent challenges, and our goal is to provide educational support to intended parents so they can make informed decisions with confidence.”

The AFA continually provides updates its educational material and has outreach events on infertility prevention, reproductive health, and family building. Their website has an extensive library of newsletters, webinars, and a toll-free help line.

Clonaid is a website that advertises “reproductive cloning services”.

I first happened upon the site when adding Google ads to our site. They were text only advertisements, which are automatically displayed depending on the content of your site. Since this is a lesbian website, ads for LGBTs commonly display as well as some for anti-gay’s. It’s all in the keywords.

I was amazed however, when I saw this ad on our page:

Your Child by Cloning
Infertile, Single, Homosexual? we help you to have your own child
www.clonaid.com

Whoa!

Upon looking further into the site here are the services that Clonaid offers:

Clonaid™ is the world’s leading provider of reproductive human cloning services. Eve, the first cloned baby, was born Dec. 26, 2002, thanks to our team of highly skilled scientists. Since then, we’ve been able to help a number of patients have their own children through our cloning technology.

Clonaid™ can help you:

If you’re sterile and have lost hope of having the child you dream of.

If you’re homosexual and deeply desire a child who would carry your own genes.

If you’ve just lost – or are about to lose – a beloved family member and would like to see an identical twin of that person begin a new life.

If you’re HIV+ and want to have a child that would be your genetic twin – without infecting either the baby or your partner with the virus.

If you simply want to be cloned, whatever your reasons may be.

This is really blowing my mind!!

I tried to wrap my mind around this. My wife and I have been trying to have a baby for the past few years, and have elected to try to have a child that would be genetically similar to the both of us as possible, thus choosing a donor father who resembles me a lot. We’ve been having a hard time, having lost a pregnancy 2 years ago, and failed tries since then.

Looking at Clonaid as an option for lesbian pregnancy, it really truly freaked me out when I thought about this fully.

Lesbians like me can have a clone of them or their partner, or any other chosen ‘cell donor’, to be implanted in either partner’s womb. The part that freaks me out about this is that the resulting child is not a creation of the parent, rather a replica of a previous creation. That would mean for me, that I would be giving birth to a new version of my wife, or my wife would be giving birth to a new me. Or… we could give birth to our own twin. WOW.

The fact that this is a possibility is truly incredible and I imagine there are circumstances where cloning is helpful.

I just can’t see this being a reality in my life, it would just be too weird to me. I imagine my child would seem like a robot to me, an android if you will; and I think I would always look at that child a little different, possibly with scrutiny.

Other couples, however, have found some benefit from the Clonaid services.

Dr. Brigitte Boisselier, head of the company that leads the Clonaid project, said babies cloned by her company are growing up healthy and normal.

“We’ve helped almost 100 families who were desperate to have a child,” Boisselier said. “Our reward has been to see a number of cloned babies growing up normally, like any infant born through natural reproduction or through in vitro fertilization.”

Some of the little known facts sprinkled around the cloning website:

“Clonaid has been able to find living cells in a body that has been dead for 4 months – there is hope!”

“Clonaid has had huge interest from people of all walks of life including many politicians and celebrities.”

Some of the other services offered by Clonaid:

-Having your cells preserved (Insuraclone™)
-Having your pet cloned (Clone-a-Pet™)
-Purchasing eggs (Ovulaid™)
