You may have noticed the past two days our site was down, and now, thanks to Allen of PremoDesigns, we are back up and running.

These past few months our website has had many growth spurts which has led to problems with our server. If you remember when we started this website last September, we were on Blogger, which is a free blogging service that we quickly outgrew. Using Blogger was very simple, but technical support was virtually non-existent. Moving to a professionally hosted website platform was a smart move for us, but it took a lot of work. We went over to GoDaddy.com which gave us WordPress for blogging and all was going well.

Unfortunately, this new pro platform was way beyond my basic html skills and I got a crash course in PHP.

I thought I had done good… I was wrong. There was a whole new realm to me called MySQL which was also apparently part of my website that I had no idea existed. This ‘database’ was causing us to over use our shared resources. The problem here now was that MySQL, WordPress, and GoDaddy are all separate entities and neither provides support for the other. So if you’re not a pro and are new to having your own pro site like me then finding answers to your troubles is not easy.

Luckily I was able to find help from PremoDesigns and we have the site back up.

To say these past few days were an adventure is extremely accurate. I ventured into techie forums and online reference manuals, tech support call centers and Google searches galore. In the end, it was hard to find help using the LGR link and I had to ask for help using my personal web address to get a reply. It was sad to see that even in the web design/hosting industry that homophobia is rampant. In order to get the help I needed, I finally found it by posting an ad for an expert in a WordPress job board, praying that homophobia wouldn’t play a part.

Thank goodness for Allen Lee of PremoDesigns who did not blink to offer help to this lesbian webmaster at no charge.

We are online and functioning now, but to let you know, after a reality check I am realizing that we have got to find a more LGBT friendly web host.

Anyone have any suggestions???

GayWired Media includes some of the most well respected digital brands serving the LGBT community including flagship sites GayWired.com, 247Gay.com and LesbiaNation.com.

LesbiaNation.com evolved into SheWired.com in 2008.

SheWired.com Senior Editor Tracy E. Gilchrist announced the transition by saying:

While the Web remains a relatively young media outlet compared to newspapers, radio, film and television, LesbiaNation.com, at 11 years old, is ancient by Internet terms. And it’s to the credit of the site’s creators and the editors and writers who’ve contributed outstanding content throughout the years, that I’m in the position as Senior Editor of LesbiaNation.com, soon to be SheWired.com, to shepherd the site into fun, fresh, important pop culture territory.

Fun, fresh and important are three accurate terms for the new site, with it’s celesbian personalities, featured columns, and user friendly atmosphere.

SheWired.com brings users these exciting new columns and features:

- Cathy DeBuono’s Weekly Vlog “What’s Your Problem?” – The star of “Out at the Wedding” offers her candid opinion on how to deal with the trials and tribulations life serves up on a daily basis.

- Jill Bennett’s Weekly Vlog “The Violet Underground” – Want to know what’s on Jill’s mind? Check out “The Velvet Underground,” where she’ll feature politics and pop culture as well as exclusive “South of Nowhere” coverage.

- Staceyann Chin’s Weekly Blog – Poet and activist Staceyann Chin pushes the limits delivering her thoughts on a variety of subjects, including relationships, dating and sex.

- Gloria Bigelow’s Weekly Blog – A featured star of “Laughing Matters…Next Gen!,” Bigelow brings her own brand of humor to SheWired.com by riffing on the week’s top pop culture and political headlines.

- Exclusive Interviews and Features – SheWired.com premieres with exclusive interviews with “The L Word’s” Leisha Hailey, the Indigo Girls’ Amy Ray, “All My Children’s” Tamara Bruan and The Veronicas’ Jess Origliasso. Additionally, SheWired.com sits down with D-Listed’s Michael K to discuss the “gayelle” phenomenon.

We LOVE SheWired.com and are subscribed to their site as they are a great source of entertainment news and celesbian interviews.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BW6gA1NCZZI/SPO7v421RJI/AAAAAAAAAqY/AsdlEFOvnRM/s320/Yeson8LGRBanner.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256751621462115474" />At first I thought it was a fluke.

I visited Lez Get Real to see what the other ladies have posted recently, and to my dismay there was a banner ad for Yes on Prop. 8 right there on the homepage, under our featured blog post.

All I could think was – YUCK. I immediately changed our Google Ad settings to avoid having these ads display on our blog, and changed our ad from a ‘text/image’ based ad space to a ‘text only’ ad space. I figured that this would eliminate the banner ad from displaying on our blog, and I was right.

However, it didn’t stop the Yes on Prop. 8 campaign from running it’s misleading ads on our site in ‘text only’ form.

They are running ads with the header “Gay Marriage” and “Support Marriage Rights”, which suggest that visiting their website will give you information on supporting gay marriage. Of course when you click on these ads and visit the website, ProtectMarriage.com, they proceed to push the idea that marriage should “only be between a man and a woman”.

I also checked out our blog’s social network on Ning, because Ning displays Google Ads on our site there, and I found that there were once again misleading Yes on Prop. 8 campaign ads in favor of banning gay marriage showing on our very lesbian website.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BW6gA1NCZZI/SPPgtG_8dmI/AAAAAAAAAq4/09DLX-WbjaY/s400/Yeson8LGRCommunity.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256792255649052258" />

From what I can see, the Yes on Prop. 8 campaign is targeting gay and lesbian websites, using keywords for it’s ad campaigns that are relevant to the LGBT community. This leads me to believe that the Yes on Prop. 8 campaign is targeting closeted and questioning gays and lesbians, and appealing to them for their vote to ban gay marriage. Isn’t it sick!?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BW6gA1NCZZI/SPO58gxA_rI/AAAAAAAAAqQ/xOpNKOm2iEU/s320/Yeson8Ads.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256749639310311090" />As you can see by this screenshot of The LNews Blog, Yes on Prop. 8 Banner ads are running on many gay and lesbian websites online.

Google AdSense is a widely used advertising program that allows website owners to display advertisements relevant to the content they include on their site. Many website owners and blog publishers use the service to earn an income that will help pay the costs of operating their site or blog. The downside is that there is very little control over which ads are displayed, and the ads displayed are based on the keywords found on your site. The Yes on Prop. 8 campaign was very skilled in the keywords that they chose, as well as in investing in a high enough cost-per-click to get their ads to the top of the results for their chosen keywords.

Their tactics are so blatant, and deviant, and downright scary.

They’ve gone to all the expense and put themselves up for scrutiny by taking this course of action, but only because they are willing to bet that some of very own readers who might be questioning, closeted, or straight allies are on the fence with their vote. They are willing to bet that their discriminatory, misleading and downright FALSE statements will give them just enough votes to pass the ban on gay marriage!

Here is the first Yes on Prop. 8 video ad that has been running on TV, and is featured on the ProtectMarriage.com website:

This misleading ad may have found it’s way onto TV, and their discriminatory campaign may find it’s way onto gay and lesbian websites around the internet, but their false accusations have simply ignited the No on Prop. 8 campaign supporters to action ever further.

Here is a YouTube video countering the Yes on Prop. 8 TV ad, showing the statistics that homophobic bigots like the ‘Protect Marriage’ website have helped to perpetuate:

To make your voice heard and help strike down the gay marriage ban, please visit the No on Prop 8 website. Also, to help strike down the attempted gay marriage ban in Arizona (again!) please visit the No on Prop. 102 website, and to help strike down the attempted gay marriage ban in Florida you can visit the No on Prop. 2 website. I doubt you will see any Yes on Prop 8 campaign ads there, but you never know with those guys.

Julie Phineas is a work at home mom of 2 who lives in Southern California.
