Does Being a Lesbian Make Me Less Spiritual?

Many people, especially those who are very religious in the traditional sense, consider it a “sin” to be lesbian; and to them, if you’re a lesbian, there’s no way you can be a spiritual person. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Spirituality has nothing to do with your sexuality. Spirituality comes from your heart and soul, and there is nothing, and no one, that can take that away from you.

Being a lesbian will not make you any less spiritual, but you may feel like it will, depending on your personal beliefs. If you were raised in a particular belief system, whether it be Christian, Hindu, pagan or whatever, chances are that these are the beliefs you are going to hold as true for the rest of your life.

A great example of spirituality in lesbians can be found in the Wiccan tradition. This is a religion that doesn’t discriminate based on sexuality, race or creed; and many women, lesbians included, find themselves drawn to these spiritual practices that involve a goddess figure.

Today, more and more lesbian and gay Christians are being accepted by their churches with open arms. Lesbians and gays are just as spiritual as the next person, and many are extremely active in their churches, teaching Sunday school lessons, attending prayer meetings, etc.

If church isn’t for you but you still want to embrace your spirituality, then you can connect with other lesbians who value their spiritual side by joining a lesbian spiritual group. Here, you will find that there are many others just like you, spiritual people who are looking for like minded women. There are many of these groups, and they practice a number of different religions. If you call your church, someone there should be able to point you in the right direction.

If you are worried that being lesbian will make you less spiritual, don’t. And, don’t pay any attention to anyone who tries to tell you otherwise. If you are a spiritual person, you will always be that way, no matter what your sexual preference.
