Estaban Navarro already lost his foot thanks to a brutal beating from a group of men yelling homophobic slurs and wielding machetes, knives and iron bars. Now, the nineteen year old is set to lose his leg.
On 23 June, Navarro was assaulted by six men on a soccer field in Peñalonén, Chile. He lost his foot after he was rushed to the emergency room. Unfortunately, infection and gangrene set in and he is now set to lose his leg below the knee. The men screamed and yelled homophobic epithets throughout the attack.
Navarro’s family stated through the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation (Movilh) that “We are very sad and concerned. Expect that here there is justice and punish those responsible to the fullest extent of the law. Esteban’s life has changed dramatically in a homophobic attack.”
Despite the fact that Chile passed an antidiscrimination law last year, it may not be enough. Rolando Jiménez of Movilh stated that “A law by itself will not lower homophobia or violence. In the long run, we need cultural change. Laws alone will not solve the problem of violence.”
