As most of you know by now,  GLAAD called out the Today Show for having a wedding contest and excluding LGBT couples. The Today Show & NBC fired back saying, because marriage equality does not exist in NY State, same-sex couples can’t win the prize. GLAAD called BS and said that NY State recognizes out of state same-sex marriage and the prize is a wedding, not a marriage. GLAAD is organizing a massive campaign to get LGBT couples involved in the contest and end the discrimination. The LGBT community has responded en masse to GLAAD’s call to action.

The Today Show has not changed their policy although they do want to sit down with GLAAD. This Friday, LGBT ally (and bisexual?) Lady Gaga will be performing on the show. LGR would like to ask the Lady to please protest the Today Show by cancelling her appearance until they allow LGBT couples to enter into their contest. This is an important issue and the always if the controversial Lady Gaga is involved, she is sure to make an impact.

There are some, both queer and straight, who don’t think this fight against the Today Show is worth it. In fact, Jonathan Howard, who along with his partner won second place in the Crate & Barrel Ultimate Wedding contest, started the facebook group, Facebook group, Tell The Today Show That Same Sex Couples Matter. He has received Facebook messages both positive and negative regarding the group. One commenter even going so far as to say fighting the Today Show is “the stupidest thing ever.” Howard responded by saying:

It is a very public show and it has the ability to change the hearts and minds of at least a few people. If the Today Show threw a truly modern wedding that showed a loving same sex couple being a loving same sex couple it would show the world how real that love is. It would show the world that love is love no matter what the gender, and it would bring more people on to fight for the cause.

That is exactly why this fight is important. Please check out Jonathan Howards Facebook group and tweet @ladygaga to cancel her appearance on the Today Show until they allow same sex couples to enter their wedding contest!

UPDATE: The Today Show has changed their policy and is now allowing same sex couples to enter the contest! http://lezgetreal.com/2010/07/today-show-relents-and-will-allow-same-sex-couples-into-the-todays-wedding-modern-love-contest/

If you are a little monster you would know that Gaga would not want to perform at a homophobic venue, no one is “using her” for anything. It’s making her aware of a situation.

First things first…. you have to remember that until the law equally recognizes same sex marriage, large corporations are often going to tiptoe around the issue. This does NOT mean they are homophobic, it means they are careful businesses that don’t want to ruffle feathers on either side. Yes doing the “right” thing would be to say screw the haters, but that’s not always good for making money. It may be considered morally wrong but business is business. So cut them a little bit of slack before screaming homophobic the minute someone doesn’t embrace us the way we want them to. Secondly… how is canceling Gaga’s appearance going to HELP us? I think it would be more beneficial to have her on the show because Gaga, if no one else, will fire the hard questions directly at them ON the show. She’s very open about how she feels about gay rights and let’s be real… if she really thought they were homophobes she would not be keeping her scheduled appearance. I just hate when our community overreacts and becomes blind to anything but protests and mass movement. Sometimes that is not always the most effective answer, and we need to save those reactions for situations where they can truly make a difference.

The Today Show changed their policy because of the pressure LGBT groups put on them, don’t underestimate the power of using your voice.
