Tim Tebow may be finding out that it is alright to be very Christian, but being a bigot is bad for the career. The football star was set to speak at First Baptist Church of Dallas, but has decided not to speak there because of the homophobia that spews from Pastor Robert Jeffress. Of course, One News Now is characterizing this as Tebow bowing to pressure from the “liberal media”, but the reality is that it might actually have more to do with Tebow realizing that bigotry is not good for the NFL or for his job.
NY Jets general manager John Idzik Jr wants to take the team in a new direction, and one of the possible cuts to the team is the backup quarterback named Tim Tebow. Tebow has had a bad year so far, and totaled only 32 rush attempts for 201 yards and only completed six of eight pass attempts. He did not manage to get his team to victory the way he use to with the Broncos.
Apparently, Idzik plans to start shopping Tebow around next week during the scouting combine. Tebow makes $2.6 million, and Idzik wants to try and cut costs. Unfortunately, because of his controversial religious zealotry and tendency to not perform very well, Tebow may end up getting released to fend for himself.
With that looming over him, Tim Tebow dropped his speaking engagement with First Baptist Church of Dallas like a hot potato.
Below are tweets from Tebow, followed by more recent comments from Pastor Jeffress:
Tebow said across several tweets:
While I was looking forward to sharing a message of hope and Christ’s unconditional love with the faithful members of the historic…First Baptist Church of Dallas in April, due to new information that has been brought to my attention, I have decided to cancel my…upcoming appearance. I will continue to use the platform God has blessed me with to bring Faith, Hope and Love to all those…needing a brighter day. Thank you for all of your love and support. God Bless!
Pastor Jeffress responded by saying to American Family Radio that “Tim called me last night and we had a very pleasant conversation. He explained to me that, because of personal and professional reasons, he felt like he needed to lay low right now and avoid controversy. And said that he would like to come back to our church at a later date. That’s Tim’s decision, and he has to do what he thinks is best.”
Jeffress said back in 2008 that “What they [homosexuals] do is filthy. It is so degrading that it is beyond description. And it is their filthy behavior that explains why they are so much more prone to disease.” He has also called Islam “evil” and Catholicism “Satanic”.
Well, Tebow can do something else…like become a minister, perhaps?
